The first time Mike travels back in time shouldn't even count because he spends the entire time blubbering like an asylum patient, grasping onto Will's pre-pubescent eleven year old arms so tight he probably leaves finger shaped bruises. He forces Will to spend the night at his house, much to the chagrin of his parents, and when he wakes the next morning he practically sobs at the relief of it all.
He saved Will. He traveled back in time and he actually saved Will not just from dying but from… all of it.
Will would end up being taken by the Demogorgon two days later just at school instead of on his bike ride home. They find his mangled purple gooped body the next afternoon.

Will dies and Mike gets sent back to that night Will gets taken, determined to save him. No matter how many times it may take and what he has to sacrifice of himself along the way.

Skinny Pete and Badger's lives after El Camino.

“Wait,” Badger stopped in the middle of the cracked sidewalk. “Actually? Are we talking about which Star Trek characters we think are gay? Because, seriously, ‘Amok Time’ was like, my sexual awakening. Kirk and Spock totally have the hots for each other.”
The yellow light from the streetlamps outlined Badger’s semi-serious expression. It was kinda weird, Skinny thought. Didn’t Badger say, some time, that they were like Kirk and Spock?
“They do sacrifice their lives for each other a lot,” Skinny conceded. “And you remember that one time with the backrub? I always thought that was kinda sus.”
“Exactly!” Badger shouted. “He thought Spock was giving him a massage and was like, totally into it, and he looked disappointed as hell when he saw it was just his Yeoman.”
“Hey, Kirk and Spock man, I support. Free love and all. Hey, wouldn’t their together-name be Kock?”
“Kock?” Badger repeated, astonished.
“Yeah, you know, like Brangelina.”
