Because that's how they handle things: every three or four months, Boris gets a new girlfriend and disappears from his life, so that Theo can deal with his disastrous marriage, have some unsatisfying, chore-like sex with Kitsey that leaves both of them frustrated and bitter, and fall into a depressive state again. Then one day Boris comes back – talking about how love went wrong, and he tries hard but always loses, but that won't stop him from loving because that's just his inner nature – and in a matter of time they find themselves like this, discovering new layers of skin again, even if they'll try as hard as possible to rip the word again out of their minds.
Trying to fix what was broken from the start is a hard task. Talking about it is out of question. No matter how much time passes. -

He can see, crystal clear, how Theo's eyes blink too quickly, eyelashes suddenly shaking, and his hand slides down Boris' back to just lay on the mattress, fingers contracted on the sheets. There is one hand that lingers on the other boy's arm, though, just a few moments more; Boris' eyes move in that direction, his thigh suddenly keeping a distance from Theo's leg.
They don't feel comfortable around each other anymore.

It wasn’t only Boris’ breath hitting his skin, although that was a big portion of the whole painting – it was also swinging in the park with their feet almost touching the ground, too high to count the hours passing, and Boris’ voice filling the air with a bittersweet coat, counting all the stars’ names in Polish (wilk, koziorożec, łabędź, wąż). It was tears punctuating the floor beneath his knees and Boris’ hands pressed on his shoulders, shaking him right and left, don’t leave me now, Potter, stay focused, look at me in the eyes, breathe, I’m right here.
Theo's been in New York for three years -- and he doesn't want to, but he can't stop thinking about Boris.
