Will froze. Absolutely froze.
His hand was buried in Mike Wheeler’s hair. Mike - who was practically draped over him now - looked blissful. Borderline euphoric. His eyes had fluttered half-shut. There was a tiny, content smile on his lips.
Will stared down at him, heart doing somersaults.
“Uh,” Will said intelligently.
Mike made another sound - soft, almost dreamy - and nudged Will’s hand, encouraging, needy without even realising it.
Will’s brain short-circuited.
💕💕💕💕
The first time Will runs his fingers through Mike’s hair, it’s an accident.
The second time… maybe not so much.
Before long, Mike is leaning into every touch, Will is desperately trying not to make it weird, and the Party is very, very done with them.

“Polar bear.”
Will is truly flabbergasted. He can barely process the words, they're so unexpected.
“What?”
“Your favorite animal is a polar bear.” Mike reiterates, “ Or was…anyways you really like them and I always thought it was so weird. Since that’s not a typical favorite animal, usually kids say something like lion or elephant or wolf but you didn’t. Yours is a polar bear and you said it was because of some documentary you saw about how the mother’s raise their cubs and protect them by themselves in the arctic and it really stuck with you. And every time I see one I think of you and that moment. But the quick trip came out with these new slushies that have a polar bear logo and the guys would always want to go after class and stuff and I would make up some dumb excuse about hating the flavors but it was a lie. I like blue raspberry, you know I like blue raspberry. It was just…every time I went into the fucking place all I saw were polar bears and all I could think about was you .” Mike finishes and his ears are tinted red and his nose keeps twitching.
Will doesn’t know what to say.

“We have to kill him,” Mike finishes fiercely, and for a second, Will pictures him in full paladin gear, making the same speech in a castle, or a magical forest, or a dark dungeon. He’s every bit the boy Will’s always known, the one who stands up for his friends and his principles and never, ever backs down. Even when the odds are against them. Even when they’re impossible.
Will swears that he can feel electricity crackling in the air, Mike’s last sentence settling on the group like a physical weight. Everyone looks impressed: Jonathan, Hopper, even Owens. Will knows the look on his own face must be incredibly obvious, incredibly stupid.
He doesn’t care. That’s the Mike he knows. That’s the Party’s leader.
That’s the boy Will fell in love with.
