“You hung it up,” Will said, stunned, his eyes tracing every detail like it hadn't blossomed from his delicate touch.
“Well, yeah. I always hang up your drawings. They’re usually in the basement, but this one just felt more… important, I guess.”
Mike's heart hammered at the implication of his words, waiting for Will to notice, to comment on it so Mike wouldn’t have to say it outright, only for the realization not to come.
“Because it was from El?” Will asked, his voice strained with false bravado. “You can tell me if you still like her, you don’t have to put up a—“
“—Because it was from you.” Mike blurted, cutting Will off and derailing that train of thought.
That late hour madness was loosening his lips once again. They were so close to the end of their world as they knew it, it was verging on the last time he ever could. Could Mike die proudly without ever letting the words fall from his lips? They’d been waiting on the edge for ages now, watching every moment that went by without drop. Tonight, they would finally free fall.

Nico held his breath. He had one thought circling his mind, a prayer, to whatever deities might be out there, watching with laughter above—he prayed it wasn’t his name. He was older now than Bianca had been, surviving past the curse of fifteen. But still, he could imagine his name coming from Apollo’s voice, the vowels stark in a Capitol accent. 'And for our first tribute, Nico Di Angelo!' His cheeks blossomed red from holding his breath for so long.
“And for our first tribute…” Apollo dug his hand in the goblet, fishing around like he was searching for the perfect one. Finally, he pulled one out, unfolding it and leaning into the microphone. “Hazel Di Angelo!”
Well, Nico got his wish. It wasn’t him.

Summary
"I just need you to know," Will says quietly, and he makes himself hold Mike's gaze, "that if something happens - if I hurt you, or anyone else - it's not because I wanted to. I would never want to hurt you, Mike. Never."
The words hang between them, loaded with more meaning than Will intended.
There's a pause where all Will can hear is their breathing echoing against the storage closet's walls. The hum is more distant now, buzzing in the back of Will's mind, but the uneven inhales coming from in front of him sound louder. The breath tickling his nose (because they really are that close) feels realer.
Mike's eyes are still darting across Will's face, and Will can feel him inhale sharply. "Will, why are you so convinced you're going to hurt someone? What did Vecna show you?"
Everything, Will thinks. He showed me everything. Showed me killing you over and over until I couldn't see anything else.
Somewhere between slaying interdimensional eldritch horrors, exploding an entire dimension, and risking their lives countless times, Mike and Will find each other.

“I hate the way you fix your hair.” Will criticizes as he works on situating the strands in the way he apparently likes.
“Really?” Mike asks, swallowing thickly as he tries not to focus on the touch, and Will nods with eyebrows upturned.
“It makes you look like your dad. That isn’t my Mike.” Will whispers with wide eyes, tapping vigorously on the left side of his own chest to emphasize his point. Mike’s heart pounds. He debates his response, debates admitting that he will always be Will’s Mike because he is always going to be Will’s, but instead, he averts his eyes and backs away, Carlton’s face haunting his mind.

Will can’t help but laugh at the words.
“I didn’t know reincarnation existed in Catholicism.”
“It’s doesn’t." Mike whispers, tipsy starlight dancing in his eyes, "But I'd believe in anything for you, Will.”
And Will knows Mike is telling the truth. That’s what kills him the most.

When Mike is twelve, a new boy arrives at the orphanage. Will—bruised and broken—makes Mike wonder about the world beyond church windows and forgotten forestry. He makes Mike wonder about himself, who he is, who he wants to be. And it only leads to damnation.
When Mike is seventeen, he is sent away to The City. Away from Will. But when he returns five years later, Will isn’t the same boy that he’d left behind. He’s taller, broader, still so beautiful, but his eyes have changed. Once filled with innocent hazel light, they now hold a lifeless gaze that Mike doesn’t recognise.
As Mike dares to look closer, secrets begin to surface, and it falls on him to expose them. All whilst he tries to fulfil his reason for returning to the orphanage — to save William Byers.
