Jaeyun tilts his head a bit, looking suddenly almost puppy-like, cute and wide-eyed and innocent, and – this is bad. Very bad. Heeseung should probably retreat and start pushing his truck out of their driveway and continue on until he reaches the next state over, no matter how long it takes or how it will inevitably lead to him collapsing from exhaustion twenty minutes in.
At least he’d be somewhere that Jaeyun is not, and he’d surely be better off for it.
“I asked if you’re a new volunteer,” Jaeyun repeats, and even his voice is pretty, his accent strong and thick, with a slight lisp that Heeseung manages to find simultaneously endearing and enticing. “For the church?”
Or, when Heeseung’s truck breaks down outside of a pastor’s house in the midst of a cross-country road trip that was supposed to give him a fresh start, he meets Jake, who’s in desperate need of a ride to a fresh start of his own. It’s a match made in – well, not in heaven. But something close to it.

“Sim Jaeyun, you are to join in hand and heart with one Lee Heeseung on the first day of July, to align families and lands for generations to come,” his father reads from the paper, and Jake’s heart feels like it’s rising in his throat, feels like it’s going to burst out of his mouth and splatter over his mother’s pristine emerald shoes. He swallows so hard that it hurts.
“Who?” he asks.
Or: Never-been-touched Jake has dreamt of his marriage since before he could walk, but Heeseung is someone beyond even all of his wildest imaginings.

“Actually, before we go in,” Jake motioned for Heeseung to shut the car door. Heeseung obeyed. “I have something for you.”
”It’s not my birthday.”
Jake sighed. “Can’t I just do something nice for my best friend?”
After being handed a small box, Heeseung smiled. “What, are you proposing to me?” He joked, opening the box and gasping. “Wait… Did you get me the remote control robot I’ve been wanting?”
Jake placed his head in his hands, shaking it back and forth. “You’re such a loser.”

and as jake is in the middle of watching corgi videos, he hears riki approach heeseung in an effort to get him to play the switch with him. even after rejection, riki squabbles with heeseung for a bit longer. jake smiles, amused, before continuing to scroll.
then his phone is plucked out of his hands, and he's met with riki's smiling face. "heeseung told me to stay with mom," riki's boyish little grin turns into a pout, wiggling his device in jake's face.
he splutters. "mom?" jake laughs unsurely, looking from riki in confusion to heeseung in question.
heeseung's eyes lifts his eyes up, tilting his head to the side slightly. jake can't pinpoint what exactly his expression means. "yeah. you're mom."

And Heeseung’s mind goes blank. They’ve been together for the better part of two years, and still, there’s something in his heart (and dick) that stirs every single time Jake compliments anything related to him. Handsome—that’s a good thing to hear, especially when he’s got a lapful of the prettiest boy he’s ever seen, the love of his life.
He blinks, almost owlish, before responding, “Thank you.”
