“Are you ashamed?”
Disbelief stains Dream’s voice, and he can feel the anger starting to rise, bright and molten, under the incredulity. He sculpted the Corinthian’s form by hand, carefully, lovingly, gave him back the shape he knew the nightmare favored – only to have the Corinthian choose to hide himself away. Here. In the Dreaming.
But before he can say anything else, the nightmare laughs, dry and humorless. “Wasn’t that the point?” he bites back, bitterness seeping into his voice. “Didn’t you make me remember so I’d be ashamed? So I’d understand why you hate me?” He pauses, pressing his lips together into a thin line as he looks away. “It’s ah, pretty damn ingenious, I’ll give you that. Dial up the love and loyalty, make me want to be good, and leave a nice little reminder tucked away in my head of why I’ll never be good enough.”
