Summary
Sid has a lot of responsibilities as captain of the Penguins. He has to come up with new and interesting motivational speeches and deliver them at appropriate times - between periods in a close game, during long and tiring playoff runs, at the beginning of a new season. He has to handle the rookies. Take them out to lunch, welcome them to the team, make sure they have a place to live, handle the emotions that come with making the jump to the NHL, all while dealing with them being terrified of him because he’s Sid. He has to talk to the coaches and front office to make sure everyone’s on the same page about the team’s direction. Of course, he also has to handle some of the older guys, the vets who are stuck in a rut, feeling down on themselves but too embarrassed to turn to him for help - so on top of everything else, he has to make sure to pay attention to everyone so he can jump in before things go too far in a bad direction.
One thing that he absolutely point-blank refuses to add to his list of captainly duties, though, is taking care of nesting goalies.

Summary
Sometimes, though, the roughness of the game sits on his mind. He’s shaky in the locker room afterwards, struggling to keep his eyes from glazing over and his knees from buckling. Matthew wishes tonight wasn’t one of those nights, he feels too vulnerable like this in Edmonton. It’s always Draisaitl when it’s Edmonton.

Summary
Klim grins at him in a way that bares all his teeth. “Aw. Puppy, fetch,” he says, then sticks his tongue out and starts panting for good measure.
“Fuck off,” he snarls, which gets Klim’s hands raised in mock surrender. Will still hears him panting all the way home.

Summary
When Connor is 13 years old, he watches Sidney Crosby score the golden goal. As he celebrates Canada winning a gold medal with his parents and brother, he imagines how it would feel if it was him scoring that goal. Even just playing in the Olympics - representing Canada, a maple leaf on his chest - would be the biggest accomplishment of his life. He’s had people following his hockey for years now, and they all say he could be the next Sid. In that moment, he has never yearned more for a white jersey with a red maple leaf on the front of it.
His mom offers to buy him one as a late birthday gift, but he immediately shakes his head no. He wants to earn it. He wants the first time he slips the jersey over his head for it to have his own name on the back of it.
