"It's four AM, asshole."
There used to be a world in which Emily's voice did nothing more than irritate. Now Chris hears asshole in a snippy tone and something like a smile flickers across his face. It's useless to think about how this doesn't make any sense. He'll take anything that works, anything that makes him feel even the slightest bit normal.
"You clearly weren't sleeping anyway."
He hears her scoff over the line, catches the sound of fabric rustling. He pictures her in bed, curled up under her blanket, laptop open to an episode of Grey's Anatomy. He pictures her in that dingy cabin basement, shadows crawling over her face, knees pulled up to her chest, saying You're gonna shoot me? Mike, me? Please—
"You should come over."
It's not what he means to say, at least not like that, not that fast. There's a pause over the phone. Chris can imagine the affronted look on her face, the way her nose might wrinkle. He doubts anyone's ever had the nerve to be direct like this with Emily Davis, not even Mike, and certainly not Ma—
"Nice try, douchebag."
She hangs up on him.
