Summary
After Caroline returns to Hampshire following Jesse's death, she keeps in contact with Doctor Grey, Mister Savile, and Priscilla. Restless after London, she explores the countryside and comes into her own as she bargains with the non-humans she finds there. She records these changes in her correspondence both with the three friends she has left and in unsent letters to Jesse.
While she longs for all three she left behind, she learns that these longings are very different. She longs for Mister Savile's freedom and Priscilla's company, but her longing for Doctor Grey is a balm in both her dreams and in her heart.
