Mydei had been his competition for years until Nikador, leaving Phainon feeling more uncertain than ever in the wake of a battle that had cost Mydei too much and him too little.
Mydei had never shown any form of interest in physical contact outside of sexual gratification. While their times together had always been enjoyable, there had always been a degree of emotional distance to them. Phainon knew that he was not being kept at arm's-length due to any sort of resentment, that he was not being used, but simply that there was a boundary between them that had been set by the nature of their relationship. Everything was in place. When undertaking such an experiment, especially one so unorthodox, Ruan Mei knew that all variables needed to be accounted for. Firstly the enclosure had to be secure, ensuring that no subjects could escape during the experiment. Secondly, certain protocols and safeties had been implemented, allowing her to put an immediate end to her experiment to ensure her safety. Lastly she had made certain to requisition items for personal comfort that were sufficiently durable and not prone to stains.
