“You have a valentine, Bob?” Somehow, it didn’t actually hit Bob that it was Valentine’s Day until she said it. Bob shook his head and shoved his frizzy curls out of his face with one hand. “Who are those for, then?”
“Walker,” said Bob, before he choked on his own spit. “I mean, it— it’s not— I didn’t buy them for him. They just came. The tag says they’re from a secret admirer? I don’t really know who that could be.”
“Interesting. Let me see.” He shoved the flowers into her arms a little harder than he intended to. A small wave of satisfaction ran through him when a few of the petals fell on the floor. What was wrong with him? “That’s strange. Nothing identifiable. You don’t think he has a stalker, do you?”
“No. Who would— Who would be obsessed with Walker like that?”
On Valentine's Day, fans flood the tower with gifts and cards for John. Bob is not happy about this.

Bob woke up on his side of the bed and the first thing he saw was John's back.
He was completely turned toward the wall and ignoring him. Bob had expected sobs, or even silent tears.
When he saw the little pop-up on his phone reminding him of the date and rested his chin on John's shoulder, John was staring helplessly at the wall, not moving a single muscle.

Summary
The alarms went off again, this time closer. John headed towards the exit, but Bob’s lost, helpless expression made him pause at the door. He knew that he was leaving that man to a terrible fate — more experiments, at best, and a one-way trip to the morgue, at worst.
John had compromised a lot of his morals over the past few years, but one bridge he wouldn’t cross was to turn his back on an innocent life. “Come on,” he said, extending a hand. “You aren’t safe here. Let’s go.”
This one more time, he could play hero.
