Summary
Nancy eyes the girl’s nervous demeanor and exuberant gestures, which had both become significantly more noticeable since she had begun speaking to her, and can only equate them to one thing. “Do you think I’m spooky?” Nancy questions, effectively cutting off her ramble. The only thing worse than an uncooperative partner was one who is actively afraid of her.
“Spooky,” Robin sputters out. “Why, I don’t know why I’d–I mean it’s not like that many people call you spooky just a…” She looks up then, sheepishly. “...Not that you’d care to know the gossip about you–or that there really is any! It’s just–no, I don’t think you’re spooky. I think you’re different and that’s interesting,” she finishes, looking moderately more confident than she was at the start. Nancy doesn’t understand that one bit and finds that fascinating. She wants to figure this girl out.

Nancy Wheeler’s supposed to be the perfect daughter. A mild-mannered socialite smiling and waving on cue. A temporary journalist using her college education to write puff pieces until she settles down.
Much to her parents’ chagrin, Nancy has never been anything like the demure doll they expected her to be, and she has no plans of ever doing so. Not when there’s so much vile corruption and wickedness oozing out of practically every office and facility in the country. Not when she seems to be the only one willing to do anything about it.

“Well,” Robin had repeated the story dozens of times to dozens of reporters, but her heart was racing in her chest as she said in this context. “Love, really. The album was about a girl I loved in high school that didn’t know I existed.”
Brief realization flashed in Nancy’s eyes before they steeled back to business, and she continued their interview with, “And where’s this girl now?”
With her heart in her throat and her stomach tying itself into a double-knot, Robin managed to sputter out, “She’s sitting across from me.”
