Summary
I want better for you, he thought, but it was too desperate. Too high of a chance that his voice would crack, that he’d let something loose he couldn’t dare bear to a child.
“You need to do better,” he said. That was appropriate. Professional.
Bruce didn’t respond. A quick glance back gave him the same sight as before, the kid's body curled into itself so only the messy hair at the top of his head was visible.
His heart hurt. He wanted to reach behind him, to put his hand on Bruce’s arm like a comforting parent.
“Take your shoes off the seat,” he said instead, and he kept driving in troubled silence.

Or, five times Alfred didn't understand a young Bruce Wayne and one time he didn't understand an adult Bruce Wayne either.

Summary
You can figure out how it goes. He makes the two-foot climb to the top of the diving board. He looks down into the water below, and though the red letters along the edge of the pool all declare obnoxiously “12 FEET!”, he thinks to himself that it didn’t really look that deep. He thinks that, clearly, everyone was just trying to hold him down. Stop him from flying. Stop him from breaking free. And so Duke does it—he dives. For about two seconds, it feels good because it’s just him, the water, and the glowing warmth of his own triumph.
Then he sinks.
Of course, he sinks. He couldn’t swim.Bookmarked by waterontopofthebridge

Summary
Bruce turned to properly face Duke. “I’m sorry I wasn’t here when you were awake, but if you want to talk now….”
Duke groaned, falling back onto the pillows. “Aren’t you supposed to be the emotionally constipated adult who just leaves things alone?”
“I’m trying this new thing out,” Bruce said dryly, “where I try to be supportive of emotionally constipated children.”
(Duke is kinda going through it. He has to accept he doesn't have to go through it alone.)

Summary
Bruce turned his head to the other corner of the room. A figure, dressed in black and blue, stood there. When Bruce's eyes fell on him, Nightwing carefully stepped closer. It was a hallucination, of course, how else could someone come in here? It wasn't real, he repeated in his head, he was just confused. Dick wasn't his son and he wasn't a vigilante - there was no such thing.
Or
Bruce Wayne wakes up in a psychiatric hospital. The doctor tells him that he has been here since his parents' deaths. At first Bruce is sure this has to be the plot of a rogue but the longer he stays there the more he doubts it. What if he really is just crazy?
