Summary
Jay wants to be somewhere else, back home with the space heater at his feet. The stadium is miserable, his chair is hard and small, and his lower-back pain is flaring. He's relieved that he was able to convince Matt against more hamburgers, narrowly escaping a pickle-flavored kiss. Speaking of, Jay watches the couple on the big screen smile and wave goodbye, replaced by a bright advertisement for concessions.
"We might be next!" Matt says, turning his head close to yell in Jay's ear.

Will turns to look at Hannibal through the opaque plastic of his hood. Rain drips down the slope of his nose, and he wipes at droplets like tears. Hannibal's eyes scan the cliff, canvassing the distance that remains. He watches Will's eyes move, looking past Hannibal, at the trail that leads down to the beach. Their footsteps are gone now, lost in the downpour and mud.
"It might be," Will says.

Jay lifts his head, staring down at him, running his hands over Matt’s clothed chest. “Hi,” he smiles.
“Hi,” Matt curls his fingers in his hair, blinking up at him. His greys are really coming in now, lightening up those dark sideburns. The ones on his chin drive Matt crazy. He’s getting older. They both are. One minute, they’re moving into an apartment on Queen Street West. The next they have a house, they have a life together.
“I’m nervous,” Jay lets out a lilting laugh.
The fear on his face is a familiar one. Do you really think we should do this, Matt? or I don’t know, I’m not sure about this one.
“What for?” Matt asks, as if he isn’t nervous too. He can’t let Jay know. Besides, he’s always braver when he knows that Jay is scared. He pushes everything forward. For the both of them. “It’s me.”
Jay takes that in. “Yeah,” he nods, the furrow between his brow meaning he’s actually thinking, processing his agreement. “It’s you.”

After everything, Matt and Jay have sex.

Jay had confessed something earlier, while they were both gaming on the couch. Matt was winning 10-1, Jay’s heart was not in it, too busy palpitating in anticipation. They’d been sleeping together for a few months now and have only just started getting a little bit weirder with it. Jay found out Matt liked getting his hair pulled, Matt found out that Jay liked being pinned down, manhandled. Yadda yadda, sex stuff, nothing too extreme, but lately Jay had been having dreams of Matt’s strong hands spanking him to tears.

He would have to go undercover of course, disguise himself as a neutral third party he could goad Jay into revealing his secrets to, get him to confess–on tape!–that he was just biding his time until he was ready to leave Matt behind in the dust, a solo act on his way to fame and fortune and crowds of people fawning all over him. Wasn’t his own devotion enough? No sold out stadium or arena across the world could come close to the adoration he had at home. Matt was his number one fan.

The nature of the thing, he thinks, is that he can't and won’t remember whatever it is that Jay fixed in 2008. Because he fixed it, back to the way it had been—and for him, for Matt, there never would have been another way. He’s never left this timeline. This is his timeline. Whatever Jay did was, technically, outside the bounds of his reality. Technically, he’s not sure this Jay is even the same Jay that existed before that morning, the day of the skydiving plan, the day he got sick. How could he be?
