“Can you show me?” Qifrey asks, feigning just a little of his frustration. Running his fingers up and down his own neck only feels marginally less stupid than Olruggio lying isolated beside him, his want palpable.
“Show you?” Olly’s voice is thready.
“Yes,” Qifrey replies, tilting his head to look at Olly until his gaze is met. “I’ll follow you.”

"Don't feign innocence, moga."
"I never said I was innocent, Christ, you're dense," Daniil breathed. His trousers were too tight; it was all too many layers of fabric, dulling the contact that should've been overwhelming until it was only teasing, just enough stimulation to drive him insane. "I'm not feigning anything, and I'm not wrong. You're the one who broke my nose and then mounted me like a feral animal, wouldn't you say that's depraved? Hell, you're lucky I'm even allowing this, knowing your bloody track record."
Artemy snickered into Daniil's ear. "It's not broken, don't be dramatic. Your pretty face will be just fine."

For sworn enemies dead set on killing each other, Daniil and Artemy survive an awful lot of one-on-one encounters.

"Yeah. I've been teaching the kid about the Kin traditional medicine, keeping him out of trouble the best I can. Though you'd probably say I'm indoctrinating him with backwater lies or some bullshit like that," Artemy spat.
Daniil contemplated for a second more. "I think we've been tricked."
Artemy chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. "Go on."
"Sticky is my apprentice, Burakh," Daniil revealed at last. "I have been teaching him pharmacology and medicine—or I've been trying to. Unless he has an evil twin like the Changeling, he's been two-timing us."
—
Sticky doesn't get why his mentors Daniil and Artemy are at each other's throats all the time. He takes matters into his own hands.

Summary
“I wanted to see how you’re doing. I know this—being here wasn’t your first choice.”
“No,” says Daniil. It’s hardly an admission. “But few of us have had our first choice these days, have we? In adversis, necesse est accommodare.” Never mind that he’s not adapting especially well at all, that Artemy has seen the proof for himself. “If you’re feeling responsible for me, I’d rather you save it for someone better suited for your protection.”
At that, Artemy looks up, and straight into Daniil’s eyes.
This close, in the light of the gas lamps, they are an unfathomable color and depth: light and simultaneously shadowed, somewhere between blue and green and gray, like staring into a clear lake that stretches deeper than the eye can make out. Daniil stares into those depths and finds himself straining forward, leaning, as if he could tip into that body of water and lose himself beneath the surface.
“No,” Artemy says at last, his voice low enough to stoke that heat in Daniil’s gut again. “I invited you here because I think you’re the only person in town I’m not responsible for."

Summary
As the ground beneath his boot soles shivered, the Haruspex at last knew what the odonghs meant when they said they could sense the weight of every pair of feet on the streets of the town.
Because he felt footsteps that should not be there, crossing the Bridge Square.
Walking west, to where the sun set, the steps spoke their own rhythmic language, tolling like a warning bell: I am going to see this to the end.

Won’t somebody help me chase the shadows away…
As much as Artemy wants to spend the night with his colleague, after the man makes an offer that they might take pleasure from each other if they're so inclined, when a butcher lays at last with his lover what will he see? A body to be caressed, or harvested? Haunted by visions of his place being to cut along the Lines, haunted by guilt over past choices, the Haruspex fears he won't be much of a close, intimate friend to Daniil Dankovsky after all...

Summary
With practiced ease Artemy cuts the ventricles free and lifts the heart from its cage. Still warm, he holds the prize out and for a moment he can pretend the pounding in his chest is coming from the organ he gingerly handles.
Slowly, Dankovsky reaches out to take it, eyes confused, evidently feeling the tension in the air. When the heart is held safely in his hands, Artemy squeezes his own eyes shut and for one moment lets himself wish.
He lurches forward and stands back up. Then he addresses the worms behind them: “Tell everyone it is done.”
---
Artemy receives his inheritance on day one. Although some of the Kin aren’t happy with his return, it does make a few things easier – like when Daniil is caught performing an autopsy. Only, he wishes someone had told him what consequences marrying the man would have.- Language:

Summary
"Consummation." Artemy repeats, caught five steps back in the conversation. Far from the mental anchor he wanted, but one he evidently can't shake now that it's passed through his mouth.
"That is what I'm offering." Daniil says, picking at the edge of his sleeve. Composed as all hell, as if Artemy's blood isn't on his face and in his hair and staining his tongue. "If you want it, too, that is."

Summary
Daniil was ogling. Again. He felt his mouth agape at the scene. How could he not? Artemy and Rubin stuck out against the dark tiles of the roof, practically seducing his gaze away from his nondescript path. But although, at a quick glance, Rubin had a fair physique that can easily be the envy of any Capital man, Daniil’s eyes were solely a slave to Artemy’s form.
---
Artemy is the perfect lover and Daniil feels guilty for, in other words, feeling a lack of satisfaction.

Summary
“I have reached a crossroads,” Daniil eventually admits, squinting out against the Steppe with a sigh. “One with no roads to take. No matter where I turn, it will be a walk into the nothingness of unpaved ground. I think I may stay in your Town for a while, yet.”
It’s said in the way he says most things, which is oddly, but Artemy decides to interpret it how he wants to. He steps forward, pulling Daniil into an unresisted if unreciprocated hug. “I’m glad you want to,” Artemy says, realising how true it is. “It is a better Town for having you in it.”
That's a blessing. There are so many things he needs to do, people he has neglected, and it's not until the words are out there that he realised how afraid he'd been of having to fix it all alone.
OR: Turns out, having to rebuild after the apocalypse - and its end - is a slower process than he'd hoped.
OR 2: Artemy just wants his children to be okay. He would also quite like to figure out what the fuck it is he feels towards Daniil, neither of which turn out to be an easy process.

Summary
“Sutures,” Daniil tells him sharply. His hand isn't moving, staying still between Artemy’s leg like the worst kind of tease. “If you move too much, they’re going to tear, and I’m telling you this: I will not lay with a bleeding man. Do you understand?”
The threat leaves him at a crossroads; he can choose to argue, which he knows would be stupid, because Daniil doesn't do empty threats. On the other hand, not arguing would feel like giving in, and Artemy doesn’t like giving in.
So he settles for a middle ground, which is sourly saying, “if I’m not allowed to move, how are you thinking this will happen?”
“I’ll show you,” Daniil tells him calmly, “but only if you do what I tell you.”
“That sounds an awful lot like blackmail,” Artemy points out. His bedpartner laughs, and now he’s confused, if intrigued.
“Oh, dear Haruspex.” It’s a sigh, spoken against his ear as Dankovsky leans in close, and if the shivers weren’t enough to keep him silent, the nickname surely is. He only thinks he’s called him that once before, and it was when he was trying to make the hardest decision in his life. The contrast is stark, and it takes him out of himself for a moment. “I think there is a lot you could learn.”

“Relax,” Artemy tells him.
Dankovsky’s body obeys before his mind does. In fact, it had as soon as Artemy touched him.
“Do you get headaches often?”

Summary
“He wounds, Cub. You are aware of that.”
“Yes. But he also heals. What we saw of him back then was also a reflection of us. He became what he needed to be in order to do his duties. We were hostile to one another, Stakh. Imagine how it was for us and how it was for an outsider… how it still is for an outsider.” Artemy looked down. It’s been months since the plague ended and still others treated Dankovsky like a stranger. He treated himself as a stranger. Calling him any other thing would have felt disingenuous... but it still felt wrong.
“Of course. Humans need to adapt to their surroundings to live and survive. But snakes do not adapt when their skins shed, nor do they become anew. They become more of what they already are.” Rubin spoke slowly, choosing his words with either care or caution while looking at Daniil’s signature coat on the rack.

Summary
Artemy Burakh,
I hope this letter finds you well; or finds you at all, for that matter. Considering the circumstances of our last meeting, I did not have time to become familiar with the quality of your town’s postal system. Hopefully, it is looking better there these days.
I’m writing to you on a matter that I fear nobody else can assist me with. I have recently come down with a strange affliction, and have run out of possible explanations. Be assured, it is not the return of the Pest nor any of its derivatives, however, I fear you may regardless be the only one with insight into my present condition.
I am aware we have not always gotten along in the past, and I am to blame for a large sum of that animosity, so I pray now that you find it in your heart to offer me, at the least, your counsel. The train that I will take will arrive on the fifteenth of February. Should you decide to accept my plea, I would ask you kindly to meet me then.
Until then, Haruspex.
With Respect,
Daniil Dankovsky, Bachelor of Medicine.

"Have you ever heard of homosexuality?" Dankovsky asks, a confident non-sequitor.
The breath gets seized out of Artemy's lungs.
"'Homo', in this case meaning 'of the same'," Dankovsky continues as if he didn't just yank Artemy's arm out of its socket with his words – or push it into place, rather? "Homogeneous, homologous, homomorphous – "
"We're opposites," Artemy chokes out. "Didn't you say?"
