    Summary

“I don’t want to go back to school,” he whispered. “I don’t want summer to end.”
I don’t want to lose you.
“We will make it work.” The assurance of his steady tone, the cool resolve in it, was a warm balm to Shane’s anxiety.
“Yeah.” He looked back out over the neighborhood, swallowing the lump in his throat that felt Ilya-sized. It’d come back thicker when they were forced apart next week, a final goodbye as they began the seventh grade. Pushing the thought as far back in his mind as it would go, he forced a small smile. “But let’s stay up here for a bit longer, anyway.”

OR: Shane and Ilya met when they were eleven, and figured it out eight years later.

    Summary

"Oh." Hollander has gone a little red, beneath his freckles. "I am from… French Canada? Québec? Do you know? Very… very small town there, no English, only French. I try to learn, but— is a bit hard."

Ilya feels mildly stupid. He knew, obviously, that they speak French in Canada, but he didn’t know it was, like— some people’s only language. He’d sort of assumed everyone was fluent in both.

    "Huh. Cool."

"Your English is very good," Hollander offers.

    Ilya laughs.

"I mean, yeah— I grew up in Minneapolis."

    Summary

“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-”

Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.

“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”

“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.

    “Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”

This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.

It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

    Summary

Six months ago, Shane’s intimate conversation and break-up with Rose Landry was recorded and leaked. In those six months, his life had completely upended and everything had changed, for better or for worse. Except for Ilya. He still has Ilya, and he’s beginning to understand that he always will.

It’s 2018. Shane Hollander has to figure out his new life, in a new city, on a new team, while being out to the world but not by his own choice. Ilya, along for the ride, also has to learn what it means to be connected to a place, to a person, and to his own inner truth.
