For a brief moment, Elliot allowed himself a selfish feeling of hope. He could hope that maybe, just maybe, he had somehow escaped this realm. Maybe he had made it back home. And, for a fleeting moment, he let himself hold onto that hope as tight as he could.
That was until he spotted the building further behind, walls caved in and engulfed in flames. It was Builder Brothers’ Pizza. It was his pizzeria. The one he worked away in every single day of his goddamn life before he came here. It was practically his second home.
He was going to be sick.

“Kid, have you played Go Fish?” He asked with a forming smirk, knowing eyes scanning hers. America just responded with a scrunched up and confused expression. Stephen shook his head, turning around and waving her over to signal her to follow. America quickly got the hint and took a large leap to walk beside him stride in stride.

A long and quiet moment of silence stretched out between them, Stephen’s hands trembling on his lap ever so slightly. Then, America quickly leapt at him and encased him in a bone-crushing hug. She gripped onto his pajamas as if they were her lifeline, feeling the cloak quickly wrap the two of them together. She sniffled, trying to constrict a sob from blurting out. Stephen was quick to comfort her, whispering calm words and squeezing her hands within his own.
They would be ok, America suddenly realized.
They would all be ok.
One step at a time.
