    There was a bitter, chalky taste in Angelina’s mouth, as there always seemed to be as of late, and she knew her clothing smelled vaguely of tobacco. Outside, London looked as hazy as it always did, encased in amber smog. Somewhere out there was her office, where she was supposed to be, writing the stories for tomorrow’s paper, but instead, she remained in the dining room, staring out the window, her plate still empty from when she was supposed to get breakfast at least fifteen minutes ago.

    The gold locket tangled over her heart felt heavy, and the divot on her left ring finger was almost completely gone. The room was too dark to see the ring she’d previously worn religiously lying on the bedside table under the lamp, a dull sapphire and two tiny diamonds pressed into a soft gold band, trapped under a fine layer of dust that had formed over the last two weeks. Samantha did not need to see it to imagine the sapphire glinting at her, taunting her, reminding her of the empty space beside her that should have been filled by now.
