Summary
“There’s a new art exhibit opening tonight.”
Mu Qing rolls his eyes. “Okay, and what about it?” he asks, sipping his tea.
“Your wedding portrait’s one of the main pieces on display.”
Mu Qing chokes and spills hot tea all over himself.
(or, Feng Xin dies. Centuries later, a wedding portrait goes on display at a museum.)

Summary
But the cool expression that he so often sees on Mu Qing’s face is absent, skin red and puffed under his eyelids. The harsh glare of the fluorescent hallway lights reveal the glittering wetness of his eyes. His nose shows signs of irritation, as if he’s been frequently rubbing at it.
“My boyfriend broke up with me,” Mu Qing deadpans, and he enters the apartment, shoving past Feng Xin.
“Uh,” Feng Xin says because, What the hell?
(Or, Feng Xin deals with a very drunk and a very sad Mu Qing)

Summary
Feng Xin could feel the heat pressing against him relentlessly and he made his way towards the center of the village, shoving through the crowd of people gathered around the fire.
Steady flames roared, eating away at the pile of wooden logs the villagers had gathered at the base of the stake. The embers crackled and spit, dotting the ground with tiny specks of light.
And there, tightly bound to the stake with thick rope, was his Mu Qing.

Summary
Mu Qing dimly registered that he was lying sprawled on his back, the scratchy, fake grass of the football turf irritating his arms. Feng Xin’s entire body was hovering over him, toned arms caging him in. Despite the football helmet heavily obscuring his face, Feng Xin’s shocked and horrified expression was apparent, even to Mu Qing. And Mu Qing's vision was currently swimming in the ocean.
There was a crackle of feedback over the stadium speakers before a voice boomed, flooding the entire field.
“Holy shit! Heavenly High’s own Big Dick King just crashed into the sidelines! Not only is he destroying cheerleaders in bed, he’s destroying their bones on the field!”
Or, Feng Xin tackles his way into Mu Qing's ribs, and then his heart.

"You...want to wear matching jewelry?"
Mu Qing huffed. "Matching couple jewelry seemed… popular in the mortal realm. It's popular with the mortals."
Feng Xin laughed. "Mu Qing, we aren't mortals."
Mu Qing felt like his face was on fire. “I know that,” he hissed.
Or, Mu Qing wants to wear matching jewelry with Feng Xin. It does not go over well.

“Have you heard?! How very disgraceful! Nan Yang Zhen Jun is having an affair with a junior official from the Xuan Zhen Palace!”
Or Mu Qing pines, Fu Yao is charming and Feng Xin is a lot smarter than anyone gives him credit for.

Summary
Nan Feng is reclining in Mu Qing’s chair, feet propped up on the other end of the seat. It’s a posture that Mu Qing has adopted himself before, but seeing Feng Xin’s deputy god sitting so carelessly raises a flash of ire in him—has he forgotten whose palace this is?
“Explain,” he demands, deciding to forgo a greeting. It’s only fair, given that Nan Feng has decided to skip the formalities himself.
Nan Feng blinks at him with a feigned boyish innocence; in this form he looks younger, less broad in the shoulders and less square in the jaw. Still handsome, though, which would be irksome if Mu Qing didn’t stand to benefit from that, assuming he’s reading the signs correctly.
“General Nan Yang owes General Xuan Zhen a gift from last year,” Nan Feng answers.
When he raises his hands out of his lap, it’s to demonstrate that his wrists are tied together—tied with Feng Xin’s distinctive yellow hair ribbon.

Summary
They’re awkward, clumsy when they bend forward but try not to touch otherwise, rushed and too slow at the same time. Mu Qing finally grabs Feng Xin’s chin to hold him still. In the moment before their lips meet, Feng Xin’s eyes flutter closed. In the moment before their lips meet, Mu Qing wonders if they should have shifted forms, so they could be themselves for this, rather than Fu Yao and Nan Feng.
No, he tells himself, no this is easier.

Summary
“It’s not only in servanthood that I’ve noticed you work hard,” Xie Lian continues. “I’ve noticed how you manage to balance your work and training together. I don’t think even Feng Xin has that level of drive.”
The flush on Mu Qing’s face deepens still. “What is your motive for saying these things?”
“I have no motive but to tell the truth, Mu Qing.”
Mu Qing’s hands shake as he gathers some hair from the front, sweeping it back to tie up in a bun. He reaches out and grabs his hairpiece.
“A-another thing I’ve noticed while you… while you were gone,” Xie Lian continues, and now that his face is no longer covered by hair Mu Qing can see he’s flushed an equally deep shade of red. “While you were gone I realized how much I missed you.”
Mu Qing drops the hairpiece. It clatters loudly to the ground.

Summary
"You said you wanted a favor from me, right? How about three favors in exchange for one?”
Mu Qing nearly stands up in his chair. “You want three favors from me? In exchange for only one? That’s not an equal transaction.”
“The extra two are tax and interest.” Crimson Rain sounds disinterested, resting his head on his hand, still staring at the die. “I’m not personally acquainted with you, but I have my sources. You wouldn’t seek my help unless it was something truly serious. Something that must be kept a secret.”
His observations were correct. Mu Qing would rather choke on his own tongue than admit it, though.
