“You know he’s not real, right?” Natalie smirks, leaning forward, daring Jackie to say something.Jackie glares at her, instinctively leaning away, like proximity to Natalie might somehow lower her IQ. Not that it’s working—Natalie just moves, rings clinking and clanging with every tiny motion, obnoxiously loud in the quiet space. Jackie’s eyes flick to them, drawn in like a crow spotting something shiny.
Then, Natalie’s hand moves—to pick up a coffee cup, of all things—and that’s enough to snap Jackie out of it. She scoffs, disgusted with herself. God, get a grip.
“You’re not real,” she mutters, like that somehow means anything.

Her most recent attempt to show her the pros of being a debutante includes recruiting the country club's golden girl, Mary Macdonald, to be her new (pretend) best friend in hopes that she'll finally agree to it.
But when Marlene finds out that there's more to Mary than meets the eye, and the two become closer than her mother accounted for, will they be able to break away from their expectations? Or will their opposite roles only push them apart?
