John Silver stopped, his left hand only inches away from the doorknob. It hovered there for a minute, the tremble of his fingers almost imperceptible in the dim light of the cottage, as he took one, two, three appeasing breaths deep in his chest. When he turned his back to the door, once again, they became shallow, barely making way out of the sore, brittle cage around his heart. It felt raw, as if his ribs had been gnawed at by a ravenous beast, over and over again, mercilessly. He wondered if the beast, sitting by the fire, could still hear the sound of them cracking between its sharp teeth. Silver did. Silver would always do.

Summary
someone once said that hope is a bird’s wing broken by a stone. James wasn’t much of a man of hope himself, given the inevitable pessimism of his existence, and those undecorated words ended up following him relentlessly throughout the years to come, slipping through the chasms of his mind every time he’d find himself disgruntled or unsatisfied with outcomes he could not possibly control, despite his need of doing so. When he first met Thomas, he had hoped for many things. One of them, the most prominent one, was that the other man would just fuck off.

Summary
Across the street from his shop, perched on the low half wall in front of a nondescript high rise of offices, there is a man playing acoustic guitar. Well, playing is a word for it anyway; it sounds as if the man has just picked up the instrument for the first time today. It’s all clumsy chord changes and out of tune twanging, but that on its own would probably be at least tolerable. Flint’s street is usually quiet, but he’s no stranger to buskers; the more populated streets are full of them when the weather is nice.
No, the thing that really ties the scene together is the bird.

Bucky thanked God that the only light in the room was from the moon and the TV, so Sam couldn't see how his face flushed. “As long as you don’t make fun of it.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it.”
Bucky smiled softly and unpaused the game, taking a little while to find where his home was. He was out mining before Sam had walked in.
