Summary
“You look handsome,” Caitlyn tells her, and it’s not even a lie. Even with the jagged edges, the disproportionate cuts, and the way that certain strands seem to be poking her in the eye—Vi still looks perfect.
Vi snorts, and Caitlyn resists the urge to repeat it, just to make sure that Vi knows yes, I love you even with this haircut, but Caitlyn can tell that she already knows that. The fact that she managed to make Vi laugh, or come near a laugh, is more important to her; the sound makes her heartbeat quicker.

Meanwhile, Vi had just been trying to find somewhere to sit so she could tune her guitar. She doesn’t know what warranted the verbal attack with a ten second time limit—she and Caitlyn haven’t done anything wrong this time.

“Don't laugh,” Caitlyn says with a scoff, though Vi notices the corner of her mouth tilt up. “It’s the only real explanation. How else did I end up in the Hermes cabin for four years?”
“Well, yeah, but Cait—you’re like, easily the prettiest person at camp.”
Vi doesn’t even realize she’s said it until the words have slipped from her mouth, entirely truthful. She tries to keep herself from turning red, but thankfully Caitlyn isn’t looking at her anyway, instead staring down at her hands.

Her eyes narrow at Vi, a hint of suspicion in them, before Vi rolls her eyes with a smile and steps away, lifting her hands up in mock-surrender. “I’m just kidding.”
The tension in Caitlyn’s shoulders eases slightly, but she still grips the bow close to her chest. “Very funny,” she responds stiffly, because joking about stealing someone’s weapons is exactly what she wants to hear in a murder arena.

They hang there and every time they break it entertains us. And when you shine a light on them it's this glittering, fantastic thing, but then a lot of the time when the spotlight isn't on them they're just still there on a pedestal but nobody's watching them. It was a metaphor for celebrity, but it's also a metaphor for people who have to feel like they have to be on for certain people."

Summary
“Eh?” Vi blinked down at the girl, a bewildered expression. She said something back, only for the teen to cut her off with more rapid, and rabid, French, motioning to Caitlyn emphatically and then pointing to Vi.
Caitlyn watched them argue back and forth, feeling a bit put off over the fact she couldn’t understand the conversation that apparently involved her. With a dramatic eye roll, Vi peeled away to face Caitlyn again, hands on her hips.
She gave Caitlyn a deliberate look up and down, like she was scanning for a bomb at the airport and came away like she was disappointed she couldn’t find one.
“Tell you what, city girl, I have to go and do some sap collecting. Why don’t you come along for a quick tour to pass the time while you wait?”

Caitlyn twisted her fingers in her lap. “Classical ballet."
“Whew! Not many ballerinas down here.” Babette gave Caitlyn a knowing look. “You’re from upstairs.”
Caitlyn nodded, feeling found out.
“And why do you want this job? You know what we do here, right honey?”
“Yes.” Caitlyn swallowed against her squeaking voice. “I have some idea of that, yes.”
Dancing. Stripping. Sex work. She’d gathered from the collection of stages, poles, and back rooms that this venue was more than your average nightclub.
“There’s something…missing from my dancing right now,” Caitlyn went on. “Vi is helping me find it. She suggested I start here.”
As if on cue, Vi returned to the office with two flimsy strips of fabric dangling from her index finger, the sight of which made Caitlyn’s face blanch. Did they expect her to wear that?
“Well let’s see how you look all dressed up and go from there.”
Unable to meet Vi’s gaze, Caitlyn took the silky fabric from her roommate’s finger and slinked behind the partition.
