Summary
Daniel sees life like a river. Thinks he is caught up in a current that only goes one way, that will eventually sweep him out to sea. It’s easier for him to think so. It keeps him alive to think so.
He doesn’t know that he could stand up and reach the bottom. He doesn’t know he has a choice.
Drugs don’t work, sex doesn’t work, New York hasn’t worked. Somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, an improbable number of suicides have taken place. Somewhere in a bar in New York, Daniel hears about them. He wants to fill a void. The difference between what is real and what isn’t matters as little to him as the things he’ll find to throw into the darkness. Which, as it turns out, is quite a lot.

“Bit of a shit thing to get drunk on,” Sam comments mildly, over the top of his own Hurricane. Sam’s mouth looks as red and sticky as one of the cherries from the top of his glass, and Jacob refuses to take that thought further.
“M’not planning on getting drunk,” he says, instead of something insane like “can you tie a knot in a cherry stem with your tongue?”
“Glad someone's being sensible,” Sam agrees. There's no bite in his voice that Jacob can detect. He dips his chin over toward Eric and his crowd. On the outskirts, Assad is talking to a pretty PA, a little too preformative about the whole thing—he keeps laughing too loudly, tilting his head to show off the long line of graceful throat and jaw. He's unbuttoned two more buttons on his burnt orange shirt, Jacob notices idly. He looks good.
“Shall we invite him over?” Sam suggests. “Give him a graceful out?”
It's probably the best idea Sam's had all night, so Jacob nods. “Yeah, why not.”
