Hogwarts taught Hermione to be a soldier.
The Order of the Phoenix swore her in as General, second-in-command to Sirius Black.
After Harry Potter falls, it's up to her to save the Wizarding World.
But no matter what, Hermione can't escape the black smoke — or her haunting Death Eater with the Cracked Mask.She turns to glance at him, but finds his eyes already on her, as if the first thing he needed to look at after is her. There's an instant charge, a gravitation pull, that sucks her straight into his orbit. Everything else just seems to slip away again.
Hermione's eyes soften. "Intense, isn't it?"
"Yeah," Malfoy rasps, studying her eyes intently. He wets his lips. "It is."

Summary
Following a chance encounter in Knockturn Alley, Hermione begins exchanging letters with the last person she ever expected to befriend: Draco Malfoy. She set down her glass, crystal clinking, boot steps butchering the quiet as she left the kitchen and marched across the parque flooring before landing at the front door. "If anyone tries to come through there and hurt me, you'd stop them, right?" she almost begged, hand flung out helplessly. "You wouldn't even let them through the door?"
"No." Instant. Involuntary. Painfully accurate. Vulnerable.
"That is what I need tonight," Elena insisted, hand falling back to her side, the tide of her breathing returning to normal. "I need to feel safe, and not have to worry about anything. I need to feel like myself, and I can only do that with someone who doesn't expect anything from me, who didn't expect me to show up in the first place.
