The longer he listened, the more gradually he began to detect something – the edges of it fluttering ever so subtly, softer than the flap of a butterfly’s wings. Itachi peered upwards, a few fat, icy flakes catching on his lashes. The darkening mauve sky was becoming nebulous above them, morphing into a sea of flurries rushing down at him faster than gravity, as numerous as dust motes dancing in sunlight.

Someone once told Itachi that the lines on his face meant he was cursed. Born under a bad star, saddled with an unlucky fate because of some past karma, perhaps.
Itachi is not a superstitious man, but maybe there is some virtue in feeling haunted the way he often does—by the pressures of responsibility and reputation, eyes from the heavens and those on earth that stare daggers at the Uchiha crest between his shoulder blades. By painful memories and the way Sasuke’s face resembles their mother’s.
It’s not until he meets a strange lute singer one day, tangling their lives together with a single glance, that he discovers what it means to be truly haunted. A man whose easygoing charm contrasts with the way secrets seem to swim in his depthless eyes.
If he’s not cautious, Itachi knows he’ll be devoured by such eyes.

“Is that… you, Viktor?”
It was barely more than a whisper, but he almost couldn’t bring himself to ask in the first place. The question scared him, the coming answer he feared even more. He knew the question was callous and loaded, but he had to know.
Those warm eyes faltered and became reproachful, they averted with a look of guilt, his eyebrows scrunching together. Viktor hugged his good knee tighter to his chest, his short and shallow breathing and his tightened lips betraying the hurt he felt at the question. The creases at the side of his nose deepened in dismay in the way only Viktor's face suited. All of these things told Jayce everything he needed desperately to know; this wasn’t the serene herald, or even the maniacal machine herald.
