Summary
A King ought not have favourites.
Finwë, as King, strove to be even-handed, open-handed, as generous to his enemies as to his heirs. He dealt with Ingwë and Olwë both the same, friends of old and peers as no others were, and most assuredly did not show favour to any one faction of the Noldor above any other.
Finwë, as father and grandfather, failed in that regard, and in many others.

Summary
"Look at this, I wanted to tell the world. Look at this heron, this bird who carries the entire universe in its eye and still chooses to look at me. Chooses to count Fingon, the vicar's son, within the expanse of its gaze. What a tragedy it is that we human beings are born with so much love to give, then forced to live lives too small and sparsely furnished to ever accommodate more than a fraction of it. How devastating that we spend our earliest years learning how to fence away and leave fallow the most promising fields of our hearts."
_________
British India, 1930s: early days of the ancient friendship turned lifelong love affair between notorious political gangster Comrade Maedhros Fëanorian and dance-master Fingon, the local vicar’s son.

Summary
Nolofinwe looked with internal trepidation at the enthusiastically smoking workshop of Mahtan, Aule’s most highly favored smith. It was certainly not the size of the structure which gave him pause (as he spent a good portion of his time in his father’s palace in Tirion), nor even its forbidding construction of coal-darkened stone, which rose to impressive heights and poured steam and smoke from various chimneys and vents like enflamed breath. What gave him trepidation was what was inside.
Or who, rather. He looked over at his father (and a little down, since he had just passed him in height). His father looked back, his calm, dove-gray eyes revealing nothing. They hardly ever did, but Nolofinwe knew that he felt the same anxiety Nolofinwe did, albeit less.
They were here because the ‘thing with Mahtan’s daughter’ was, according to rumors, beginning to look serious.
