Summary
I don’t think this is a story about me, even though I keep ending up in it. That’s probably the first mistake. It’s about a town like this one, where nothing dramatic ever happens and somehow that makes it worse, because you’re left alone with yourself and the things you notice and don’t say out loud. It’s about school, mostly, and the way boys learn what they’re allowed to be by watching what happens to the ones who get it wrong.
What actually happens isn’t much, which is convenient, because it means no one can point to a moment and say that’s where it went wrong. There are jokes. Looks. Silences that last a second too long. Things I say that don’t technically mean anything. Things I don’t say that probably do. Everyone’s just getting through the day. Everyone’s just doing what makes it easier to breathe.
I want normal. I want quiet. I want to stop feeling like something is wrong with me that everyone else can smell. So I make choices that feel practical at the time. I side with the noise. I tell myself that watching isn’t the same as doing. I tell myself that whatever happens would’ve happened anyway.
I don’t come out of it looking good. I come out of it looking honest, which might be worse.
