Capitano cannot name the reason he is so concerned for the girl, other than there being a strange sort of kinship between them. They are both remnants of a nation ages past, by very little intention or agency of their own. They both have an acute longing for freedom from the knife which twists them into their respective shapes, and are both perfectly aware that the only freedom they will get will come in death.
This, and- well. She is a child. He is not heartless. Simple math.
He has to do something. If his two options are to kill her now or to pawn off the responsibility of her death on the Snezhnayan state, he must invent a third.

“Did I…leave a ward on or something?” She looks down at the lantern, held outside by an invisible force. Melly’s pretty sure she could’ve left something like that once– one that dispels anyone not from the forest. It just goes to prove the mystery of the insect. “Oh well,” Melly says, slipping off her shoes and kicking them to the side, “you can come in.”
The presence of virulent malice stuns her as she moves to put away her coat. A cacophony of clinks and crumbles and shatters of glass alert her of the lantern’s fate. Adrenaline and reckless curiosity galvanize her to swivel around, knuckles as white as the scintillating gleam of a blade. Fatigue remolds itself into vigilance.
