"I do have a suggestion," John said, coming to take a seat beside her. She sat up and squared her shoulders. When John wanted to sit beside her, it usually meant the conversation coming next would leave her agitated and tired. "I think you need to produce an heir of your own."

Kiriona stared. Seconds of silence passed by with only her wide eyes and John's impassive glance. Finally, she burst into raucous laughter, going so far as to slap her knee.

    Summary

Harrowhark Nonagesimus has come a long way from her sheltered Mormon upbringing. She's moved to the city, she's out, she has her dream job as a paleontology research associate at her favorite museum, she has friends, she's got a (begrudgingly alright) situationship that hasn't crashed and burned yet.

So why does she still feel like a fraud? And why do her thoughts always, inevitably return to the girl she abandoned more than a decade ago?

    Summary

"Will you sit on this?" Gideon asks, seemingly apropos of nothing (though Ianthe's threat of take that wretched woman to bed or else resounds in her head) as she hands her a pillow.

Harrow rears back from the fluffy piece of decorative nonsense. "Why would I?"

    "Humor me."

Ninth nuns warned of carnal pleasures. Nothing about her existence constitutes the need for desires of the flesh beyond a desire to unite with the body of the locked tomb.

Yet, finally divorced from her own thoughts and very will, her body gives a jerk that unhinges her jaw until her mouth falls open, almost in shock. This sensation feels like a shock to her very system. She belatedly realizes this is why Gideon made her sit on the pillow, pure subterfuge. "Griddle," she warns.

"Just like that, Harrow. Keep going."

As Gideon and Harrow explore physical intimacy for the first time, Harrow’s lifelong admirable Ninth modesty is a little tricky to shake.

    Summary

“Harrowhark,” says Father Gaius, rolling the sounds around his mouth with the air of an unintentionally patronizing uncle. “That’s quite a…vivid name.”

“It reflects my late parents’ wish for me to free their community from the hell of Earthly temptation before the new millennium,” she explains in a deadened tone. If the pastor correctly hears free as a euphemism for lead in mass suicide, he gives no indication. “They believed my birth was prophesied.”

“Now, that would have been an interesting tidbit to list in your qualifications.” He grins, brandishing her resumé; when the joke falls utterly flat, his grin falters into something more pathetic. “The charismatics do tend to get carried away, don’t they.”

In the year 2000, Harrow gets a job at John Gaius's church, meets his handsome and pious daughter, and things go to Hell in a handbasket.
