Summary
"Ma'am," says Nick, her doorman, sounding hesitant. "I know it's not my place, but he looks—erratic. He's been shivering and talking to himself for the last five minutes. Are you sure I should let him in?"
Talia leans closer to the speaker. "Is he armed?"
"Not as far as I can tell."
Talia considers that for a moment. It is a very short moment.
"Send him up," she decides.
After struggling with the effects of his failsafe, Jason decides to seek refuge with Talia in Metropolis.

Summary
When Jason closes his eyes that night, he thinks back to the women he'd see through the window in his old neighborhood, their mascara running down their cheeks as they leaned against the wall, cigarettes clutched between their fingers. There was no telling where they had come from, or where they'd go. Nameless, faceless, leaving very little to remember them by. Go to sleep in Crime Alley; come next morning, the same people you saw the night before were gone. Come next week, there'd be different families in their tenements, different women walking the beats they once did. The best case scenario was that they'd simply moved elsewhere, like Jason had. The worst case scenario could be anything, from feds, to serial killers, to just...to just nothing. No answers. No closure. Countless blood sacrifices that Gotham took while the rest of the city kept running.
Sometimes Jason is relieved he made it out. Sometimes it keeps him up at night for a long time.
The last year of Jason's life, revisited.

Summary
By the time Bruce actually wakes up, it's two in the afternoon, and the house is quiet. Every now and then, the curtains flutter, giving him a peek at the overcast skies outside. Bruce doesn't remember the forecast saying anything about rains this week, but then again, he isn't exactly at his most lucid this time of year, and Gotham tends to be unpredictable. A city that takes more than it gives, but for once Bruce isn't thinking about what it's taken. Not exactly.
It's been 23 years since Thomas & Martha Wayne died and left Bruce Wayne an orphan.
It's been one year since Jason Todd came into his life and made him a father.

Summary
A good night, in Gotham's definition, was a night without citywide blackouts or citywide water tank poisonings or fear gas explosions manufactured by former Arkham inmates. Somehow, no matter how you looked at it, it felt like the worst of Gotham's days were behind them. With the Joker gone, a silence had fallen over the city—and had prolonged for far longer than anyone expected. There was no going to bed worried or scared about the depravity of their world or the safety of their people. A switch had been flicked off. Something irreversible had stretched over the fabric of the city, protecting it. Batman didn't have to be in ten places at once. Just in the right place at the right time, like he had been in Ethiopia.
Black mercy is back, this time as a drug on the streets of Gotham. When Jason gets drugged with it, he sees, what he believes, is a perfect fantasy.
(Inspired by Superman Annual #11, 'For the Man Who Has Everything').

Summary
They sat on abandoned crate boxes, watching it all pass them by. It had a beautiful kind of grit, this city. Willis put an arm around Jason's shoulders and pulled him close, making him guess the make and model of whatever car was close enough for them to spot, close enough for him to point to. His voice was gentle but authoritative—like this was the one thing he had any sort of authority over as he taught Jason to watch for the signs. The ones with the flimsy whitewalls, the ones with sturdy builds. How much each went for at the secondhand automobile stores, and how much Gilly down at the chop shop would take them for. It had felt like a game or just talking shop to Jason then, sitting by the roadside with his dad, picking out the Fords from the Hyundais and laughing at each other about which ones they admitted to wanting to own one day.
It had never occurred to him that Willis was teaching him how to survive.
Jason, Willis, Bruce and cars.
