Will swallowed hard. “I-Im sorry, I… I can’t sleep.”
Mike didn’t rush him. He didn’t fill the silence. He just breathed softly on the other end, steady and grounding.
“Why?” Mike asks curiously.
There was a tiny shift in Mike’s breathing like he was sitting up straighter.
Will stared at the dark ceiling. “I keep thinking about… bodies.”
Mike didn’t react. Didn’t make a sound.
“Like… how gross they are,” Will continued, voice shaking. “How we’re all just… bags of blood and organs and… and bacteria. And everything inside us is just… messy. And breakable. And it feels like… like everything could go wrong at any second.”
He waited for Mike to be weirded out. Or confused. Or disgusted.
But Mike’s voice was soft when he finally spoke.
“That sounds really scary, Will.”
