It isn’t that he enjoys the killing - not at all, but he doesn’t have to like his job to be good at it, to not miss a target under any circumstances, even when half-blind, even when his own body is giving out under the weight of the Punisher. It doesn’t make the burden on his shoulders any lighter, either, but at least he is used to it by now, after years of not knowing anything but and having lost all hope in a way out. (He was barely out of adolescence when he realised there was no coming back, no saviour to come and sweep him out of his own personal hell; nowadays he knows that one single hope would’ve gotten him buried way faster than any battle Chapel sent him to.) The other part of his job, though - the one that is, despite everything, just as real, because the prayers have been forced into his head and his hands and body know every ritual like they know the mechanical body and the uneven surface of the Punisher; he doesn’t want anything to do with it.

Once upon a time, when they were actually fighting, Shizuo had assumed Izaya was a bad shot. What other explanation was there for the way he would conveniently miss his eyes, or his throat, or his arteries? But now he knew better.
Izaya’s control was, as always, terrifyingly precise. This man could hurt him exactly as much as he wanted and not a fraction more. Shizuo was struggling to hide just how much he was loving being under that kind of control.
