Yor’s smile faltered. “Is he at the hospital?
Can I-?”“He died at the scene, ma’am.”
The air collapsed.
The apartment seemed to tilt.
Something inside Yor simply… stopped.She didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. She only stared, eyes wide and glassy, as if reality had twisted into the shape of an impossible sentence.
“That’s…” Her voice cracked, very softly. “That can’t be. No, no… he-he left for work this morning. He said he’d be home for dinner.”
“We’re very sorry.”
The words did nothing. They thudded against a wall of disbelief so thick it barely absorbed them.
Behind her, Anya felt the policemen’s thoughts like needles.

Yor stood at the sink, sleeves rolled up, washing the last of the dinner plates. Loid dried them beside her with practiced ease. They moved together without needing to speak; not in a comforting way, but in the way two people do when they’re keeping things from each other.
She hadn’t said much all evening. Her usual brightness was dulled, not gone, but dimmed, like a light under a blanket. Loid had noticed. Of course he had.
“Work tiring you out?” he asked quietly, not looking up from the plate in his hands.
Yor hesitated. “Mm. Just… long days.”
It wasn’t a lie exactly. But it wasn’t the truth, either.
Loid didn’t push. He told himself it wasn’t his place. And yet, he couldn’t ignore the way she hadn’t looked him in the eyes since dinner.

Affection didn’t come naturally to Twilight.
He could perform the usual (or unusual, if that was called for) on honeypot missions, of course. Those encounters were the nearest to affection he’d experienced in years. Decades. He did not count them.
However, as affection was something he neither wanted nor needed, it wasn’t something he thought about.
The ways affection becomes new again, known again, for Twilight over the course of his mission — and for the rest of the Forgers, too.
