The air collapsed.
The apartment seemed to tilt.
Something inside Yor simply… stopped.She didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. She only stared, eyes wide and glassy, as if reality had twisted into the shape of an impossible sentence.
“That’s…” Her voice cracked, very softly. “That can’t be. No, no… he-he left for work this morning. He said he’d be home for dinner.”
“We’re very sorry.”
The words did nothing. They thudded against a wall of disbelief so thick it barely absorbed them.
Behind her, Anya felt the policemen’s thoughts like needles.

Loid didn’t push. He told himself it wasn’t his place. And yet, he couldn’t ignore the way she hadn’t looked him in the eyes since dinner.
