Work Text:
Shouta wasn’t really a romantic. However, his boyfriend certainly was, so Shouta guessed that he could try being romantic every now and then.
And that’s why Shouta was going to serenade Hizashi. Maybe serenade was a bit too strong of a word. Sing to him. Shouta was going to sing to Hizashi.
It was honestly kind of awkward to start singing. It was an awkward period of time where Shouta had not started singing yet but was instead explaining that he was going to sing to Hizashi. At least Hizashi looked excited.
Hizashi was also quiet, looking at Shouta expectantly, so Shouta took a deep breath before beginning to sing softly.
“I took you at your word,” Shouta started. He honestly didn’t know how Hizashi did this sort of thing for his radio show. “When you said you would steal my heart.”
Honestly, that wasn’t exactly what happened, but Shouta remembered Hizashi being particularly insistent on becoming friends, even while Shouta himself was dismissive and cold towards him.
“Hey! Aizawa! How are you?” Hizashi asked, enthusiastic as ever.
Shouta said nothing and tried to find get back to reading his book. However, Hizashi was completely undeterred.
“Would you like to have lunch with me today?” Hizashi had asked the same question everyday since Shouta had transferred into the heroics course.
“No.” Shouta responded. And just like every other day, Hizashi didn’t appear to be overly upset at Shouta’s dismissal. “Why do you want to have lunch with me so badly anyway?”
“I want to become friends with you, of course!” Hizashi’s grin was blinding.
“I came here to become a hero. Not to make friends. Maybe you should do the same.” Shouta responded. But what Shouta said just made Hizashi look determined.
“I’m going to become friends with you!” Hizashi declared.
“Good luck with that.” Shouta said dryly, and he watched as Hizashi left the classroom that day with an extra pep in his step.
Soon after, Shouta noticed that Hizashi redoubled his efforts to befriend him, or, at the very least, hang out with him.
“Fine. I’ll go with you to the arcade after school.” Shouta finally relented. Hizashi looked surprised before he grinned brighter than the sun.
“Really!?” Hizashi was practically bouncing.
“Really. Now leave me alone. I have work to do.” Shouta said. Hizashi actually skipped away from Shouta.
...Shouta ended up having a good time at the arcade.
Shouta was glad he went to the arcade that day, however irrational it was to gain fond feelings towards Hizashi.
“Yeah, this may sound absurd,” Shouta continued. “But would you be my thief, take all of me, every part.”
Shouta had no idea when he fell in love with Hizashi. It kind of just happened over a long period of time.
The realization that Shouta was in love with Hizashi was more of an acceptance than anything else. A simple fact.
The important part of the matter was if Hizashi liked him back. However, Shouta would never know if Hizashi actually liked him back unless he asked him out. It was the most logical course of action.
The worst thing that could happen would be that Shouta would get rejected, and things might be kind of awkward for a bit. Nothing Shouta couldn’t handle.
However, Shouta didn’t get a chance to ask out Hizashi himself because Hizashi asked him out.
Hizashi was holding a bouquet of flowers and was nervously pulling at his collar when Shouta walked up to him.
“Ah! Shouta!” Hizashi practically jumped out of his skin. “You surprised me!”
“What are the flowers for?” Shouta questioned.
“Ah, well, um…” Hizashi cleared his throat and shifted his weight from one foot to the other. His face turned red, but his face hardened in determination, not unlike the expression he had when he declared that he would become friends with Shouta.
“They’re for you! Will you go out with me, Shouta?” Hizashi held out the bouquet towards Shouta. Shouta could feel himself smiling at the fact that his feelings were recuperated.
“I was going to ask you out today.” Shouta said, accepting the bouquet.
“Really? Does that mean that you like me back?”
“Yeah, Hizashi. I like you back.” Shouta stated. “We can go to that ice cream place nearby for a date, if you want.”
“I would love that!”
“Love, love, love is my crime,” Shouta went on with the song. “So baby, come catch me, and let’s do the time.”
The song was kind of ironic, speaking as a pro-hero. Afterall, neither he nor Hizashi had ever committed a crime and, instead, spent their lives saving people from those that did break the law. Although, there was that one time…
Shouta saw someone’s purse get stolen and immediately jumped into action. The thief wasn’t that difficult to apprehend, and the purse was soon returned to the individual it was stolen from.
However, a policeman saw Shouta do the deed, which wouldn’t have been much of a problem if the police actually listened to him.
“If you’re going to do hero work like that, I need to see your license.” The police officer demanded. It occurred to Shouta that this just might be a minor inconvenience that he had to deal with when he wasn’t known to the public.
“Here it is.” Shouta pulled out his hero license and waited patiently for the officer to look over it and give it back so that Shouta could go back to his work.
“Eraserhead, huh? Never heard of you.” The police officer was looking at Shouta suspiciously.
“I would hope not. I’m an underground hero.”
“I’m afraid that I’m going to have to arrest you for doing vigilante work. You’re coming with me.”
“I just gave you my license. I wasn’t doing vigilante work.” Shouta tried to explain, but the officer wouldn’t listen to him.
“Likely story. It’s probably faked.”
Shouta sighed, but he allowed the police officer to take him to the police station.
“You can call one person.” The police officer said, handing Shouta a phone. Shouta took it and began dialing Hizashi’s number.
“Shouta!? Are you okay!?”
Shouta winced at the loud voice coming from the phone.
“I’m fine.” Shouta heard a relieved sigh.
“I was worried! You never call! What’s wrong?”
“I’ve been arrested because a police officer didn’t believe that my hero license was real.”
“What? Did he think it was a perfect forgery or something? What made him think that it was fake?”
“He’d never heard of the hero ‘Eraserhead.’”
“You’re an underground hero! Of course he’s never heard of you!” Hizashi shouted. “I’ll be over there in a jiffy. What police station are you at?”
Shouta told him and waited patiently for Hizashi to get there.
When Hizashi got there, he ended up proving that yes, Shouta was, in fact, a pro-hero and that he was arrested unfairly, so Shouta got out fairly quickly.
“I can’t believe he thought your license was a fake!” Hizashi yelled. “I’d have half a mind to get him fired!”
“Hizashi, it was a misunderstanding. There’s no reason to get someone fired for it.” Shouta said.
“I know, but I’m still mad!”
Yeah, that was annoying. Hizashi still got heated over it whenever it was brought up.
“I think we might be outlaws, I think I might be in love,” Shouta sang. “Cause I’m all out of reasons, like seasons, winter, summer, fall. They’re all washed up.”
Honestly, Shouta went through a phase where he constantly tried to find excuses to hang out with Hizashi. It would always be things like study sessions or tutoring, and even the occasional excuse that his parents didn’t want him to go somewhere alone. However, he was pretty sure Hizashi did that too.
“Shouta! Come with me to the pumpkin patch this weekend!” Hizashi bounded up towards Shouta.
“Why?” Shouta asked. He was still going to accept the invitation, but it was strange to ask out of nowhere like that.
“Because I want to get a pumpkin to carve!”
“Why can’t you just get a pumpkin at the store?”
“It’s not the same!” Hizashi lamented. “Half the fun is actually going to the pumpkin patch!”
“Alright. I’ll go with you.”
They went to the pumpkin patch, and Hizashi managed to convince Shouta to get a pumpkin to carve as well, so they ended up at Hizashi’s house, carving pumpkins and putting the guts aside for cooking purposes.
Shouta carved a fairly basic pumpkin, while Hizashi made his have a star and a moon for eyes. When Shouta saw what Hizashi had carved, he made his pumpkin’s eyes into suns.
“Now they match.” Shouta explained. He was a little embarrassed by the sudden decision, but Hizashi lit up.
“That’s so cute!” Hizashi cooed, and Shouta smiled at how easily pleased Hizashi was.
“If you’re still way over there, maybe slide on in by my side,” Shouta continued singing. “Cause I’m just an outlaw, wanted, if you want me. I love you every day and every night.”
Hizashi was already very clearly smitten by the song. He was staring at Shouta like he hung every star in the sky, and he had the most dopey, lovestruck smile on his face. It honestly made Shouta feel a little embarrassed, but he continued the song because he really did love this ridiculous man.
“Oh woah. Lock me up for good right here in your arms. You’ve vandalized my neighborhood with your piercing eyes and devilish charm.”
Hizashi really was charismatic. He was the life of every party, and he was flirted with by almost everyone. Shouta didn’t mind though. It meant that he, himself, stayed out of the limelight, and, honestly, he didn’t really get jealous.
“Don’t you ever want to sleep with or date some of the people that flirt with you?” Shouta asked one night.
“Shouta? Where did this come from?” Hizashi questioned. He looked concerned and slightly guilty, and Shouta couldn’t be having that.
“I wouldn’t be opposed if you did, you know.” Shouta said. “I’m fine if we decide to have an open relationship. I just want you to be happy.”
In that moment, Hizashi looked at Shouta with so much love and affection that he honestly thought he would implode.
“Shouta…” Hizashi smiled softly at him, and Shouta could feel his heart melt into a pile of goo. “If I ever want to date someone else or even just have a one night stand with somebody, I’ll tell you. But, for now…” Hizashi took hold of Shouta’s hands. “I couldn’t be happier than just being here with you.”
Shouta buried his head in Hizashi’s chest, completely overwhelmed with love for this enthusiastic, loud, boisterous man that was his opposite in every way.
That’s when Shouta made the decision to go out and get a ring.
“Love, love, love is my crime. So baby, come catch me, and let’s do the time.” Shouta went on to the chorus of the song. “I think we might be outlaws, I think I might be in love cause I’m all out of reasons, like seasons, winter, summer fall. They’re all washed up. If you’re still way over there, maybe slide on in by my side cause I’m just an outlaw, wanted, if you want me. I love you every day and every night.”
Shouta reached in his pocket to make sure the box was still there.
“Love, love, love is my crime. So baby, come catch me, and let’s do the time.”
Shouta rubbed his fingers over the smooth exterior of the box. He could do this. He’d practiced over and over to get this just right, and he hoped he could get this right.
“I think we might be outlaws. I think I might be in love.” Shouta’s voice was softer now that he was nearing the end of the song. “Cause I’m all out of reasons, like seasons, winter, summer, fall. They’re all washed up. If you’re still way over there, maybe slide on in by my side cause I’m just an outlaw, wanted, if you want me.”
Shouta honestly loved Hizashi with all his heart and soul, and he wanted to be able to give Hizashi everything, so he really wanted to make this moment special to him.
“Baby, we’re just outlaws. Baby, I’m so in love.”
Shouta gripped the box in his pocket, getting ready to pull it out.
“Cause I’m all out of reasons, like seasons, winter, summer, fall. They’re all washed up.”
There was just a little bit more of the song left, and Shouta could feel his heart pound deep in his chest.
“If you’re still way over there, maybe slide on in by my side.”
It was time. Shouta got down on one knee.
“Cause I’m just an outlaw, wanted, if you want me. I’m just an outlaw, wanted, if you want me.”
Shouta pulled out the ring and presented it to Hizashi as he sang the last lyric.
“I love you every day and every night.”
Hizashi looked like he was about to cry, and he had a grin that looked like it was about to split his face in half.
“Hizashi, will you marry me?”
“Yes! Yes! Yes!” Hizashi was full on sobbing now as Shouta put the ring on his finger.
Hizashi engulfed Shouta in a bone-crushing hug.
“I love you so much, Shouta.” Hizashi said through his sobs.
“I love you too, Hizashi.”
