Work Text:

Tokoyami watched his classmates from his dark purple beach towel, underneath his umbrella. He wasn’t the most adoring fan of the ocean and the sun certainly didn’t do anything for his pale complexion. If he hadn’t been allowed to bring a book, he most likely wouldn’t have come, despite his friends’ insistence. After all, what could be better than reading a good book in the shade on a nice day?

Of course, the tranquility had to be broken. And who else would commit such an act other than Kaminari and Ashido?

“Heads up, Tokoyami!” Ashido called. He looked up, about to ask what required his attention, before something struck him in the face at supersonic speed. The moment the Frisbee made contact, Tokoyami heard a sickening crunch and blinding pain spiked through his mandible.

“Shoot, are you alright, man?” Was that Kirishima? Through his squinted eyes, Tokoyami saw a blurry red outline.

“Please remove your hands from your beak,” someone who he thought was Iida instructed. He felt big, yet surprisingly gentle hands tug his away. He heard someone suck in their breath through clenched teeth. “That’s not good.”

Tokoyami’s classmates had started to crowd around him, muttering about what had happened and what the best course of action should be. It wasn’t exactly like Tokoyami had a human face, with a fleshy nose to break.

“Kaminari, you idiot!” Smack. Ah, Jirou.

“It was Ashido who threw it!”

“Did not!”

“Did too!”

“It doesn’t matter!”

“Does anyone have antiseptic by any chance?”

“Hold on…here.”

“Thank you, Yaoyorozu.”

“How the fuck do we fix a cracked beak?

Tokoyami barely registered Bakugou’s question. His beak…cracked? No, that wasn’t good at all. However, it did explain why it felt like Ashido had thrown a bucket of her acid on his face.

“Iida, take him to the hospital,” was the last thing he heard before he finally lost consciousness from the pain.

~~~
Tokoyami blinked his bleary eyes open. He appeared to be in a large bed, the blankets pulled up to his chest. A heart monitor beeped to his right. He was in a hospital. Tokoyami couldn’t feel his face. He hated it.
Tokoyami lifted a hand to his beak. There was some sort of gauze covering it, rendering him unable to smell. He tried moving his jaw. A jolt of dull pain sparked from the movement, so he didn’t attempt it again. He wasn’t looking forward to eating in this state. Ugh, what a mad banquet of darkness.
Beside him, Dark Shadow materialized to rest in his lap and purr contentedly. Tokoyami sighed and stroked the shadow. He turned his head slightly to the left. There was a nightstand, filled with apples and sour candy, with attached notes of “get well soon” and “we miss you”. Tokoyami felt his heart swell with gratitude. Truly, getting into Class-1A was one of the best things to ever happen to Tokoyami, for he made so many invaluable friendships. Even if his friends were a little…obtuse at times, he wouldn’t trade any of them for the world.
Notes:
I wanted to write something for Tokoyami, because his birthday's in October too. He's probably in my Top 10 Favorite BNHA Characters. This birb needs more love! I don't know anything about birds, but apparently their beaks can break and I was like, "what if Tokoyami broke his beak?" Then this happened. Anyway, thanks for reading! Leave kudos and comments if you enjoyed! Criticism is also welcome, don't be shy, dears!
