Chapter Text

“Ok, ok, so-” Midoriya took a deep breath, then started to count off on his fingers. “To recap, a small-time villain had been using his amnesia quirk to rob banks, and escape with the witnesses unable to provide information. We got called in to assist the pro heroes into taking this guy down.” He paused to look up at Iida, who was sitting in a chair in front of him, listening with an attentive expression. “Uh, are you following along so far?”

“Yes!” Iida nodded quickly, then frowned and raised one hand. “Er, may I ask one question before you continue?”

“Yeah?”

“What was your name again?”

“Midoriya,” Midoriya answered patiently, pointing to himself, then to Iida. “I’m, Midoriya Izuku, and you’re Iida Tenya.”

“Right! Yes!” Iida scowled and pressed a fist to his chin. “Perhaps I should write this down…”

“The amnesia should only last for a week at most,” Midoriya hurried to assure him, “And we’ll stick by you to help you through it.”

“I see!” Iida dipped low into a bow, hands planted on his knees. “My apologies, that my carelessness has led to such trouble on your part.”

“It’s not your fault!” Midoriya hurried to answer. “Really! Don’t worry about it! Um…I guess first we should take you back to the dorms. After that, uh…” He led off at a knock on the door. Iida cocked his head to the side.

“Come in!”

“Hey,” The door opened to reveal Todoroki, followed by Uraraka, “Have you filled him in yet? We should be heading back.”

“Iida!” Uraraka trotted over with one hand raised high in greeting. “I’m glad you’re alright! Well aside from the memory thing!”

“Ah, thank you!” Iida stood up to greet her. He looked at her raised hand with a ponderous expression, seemed to come to a conclusion, and clapped her hand with his in a high-five. Uraraka blinked, then Iida blinked, then Iida yelped as his feet floated up off the floor.

“Um!” His arms pinwheeled back as he went drifting off toward the ceiling. “Is this normal??”

“I’m so sorry! Hang on!” Uraraka hastily pressed her fingers together. Iida dropped to the ground, thankfully saved from breaking his neck by Midoriya leaping in to catch him.

“This, um, is Uraraka.” Midoriya steadied him up to face her. “If you touch the pads on her fingers, you float, so, try not to do that.”

“I see!” Iida extended his hand out to shake, then hastily pulled it back into a wave instead. “Um, right! My apologies!”

“No no I’m sorry!” Uraraka covered her mouth with her hands. “I didn’t mean to! I was just waving hello!”

“I understand! I will avoid such actions in the future!”

“Did he really forget everything?” Todoroki turned to Midoriya. “He still acts like Iida.” Midoriya gave a sheepish shrug.

“Some things don’t change.”

“This is our dorm building.” Midoriya pointed at the tall building towering over them. Iida gave a sharp nod, looking it up and down.

“An efficient and modern design!”

“The rest of the class has been filled in,” Uraraka commented as they headed toward the door. “So it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.”

“How many people are in our class?”

“Twenty in total.” Midoriya reached for the door but Todoroki grabbed his shoulder to stop him.

“I want to see something,” He muttered in a low voice when Midoriya shot him a confused look. Iida reached for the door instead. He gave it a firm push, paused, then coughed before pulling instead.

“Is there a directory I could consult?” He asked over his shoulder as they headed inside. “I would like to at least review the names and faces before I-”

“Hey! He’s back!” Iida’s head snapped forward at the voice. A large crowd was gathered in the common area, and as the door closed behind the them the crowd had already stampeded forward to surround them.

“Iida!” Ashido shouted over Asui’s head. “Hey Iida, is it true you lost your memory?!”

“Iida do you remember me?!” Kirishima jabbed a thumb at himself. “What’s my name??”

“Are there any effects aside from temporary amnesia?” Yaoyorozu called out over the noise, but she was interrupted by Kaminari shoving a book upwards in front of her face.

“Iida does this mean you can’t help me with the homework? Oh hey!” He dropped his book to grab Shinsou’s wrist and yank it up. “Maybe if Shinsou uses his quirk on you it’ll like, cancel out the amnesia!”

“There is no reason that would work,” Shinsou snatched his hand back, “And plenty of reasons it could cause trouble.”

“E-Everyone hang on!” Midoriya yelped and raised both hands. “Don’t hound him all at once! He’s already having a rough day!”

“You ok?” Todoroki asked Iida, who had remained silent, and was looking around the room.

“-fifteen, sixteen-” He muttered to himself, “-and the four of us make twenty. Is this everyone?”

“Yep!” Kirishima grinned and flashed him a thumbs up. “We heard you were coming back so we all came down to wait. Even this guy!” He slung an arm around Bakugo, who had just been starting to slink off.

“Shaddup,” He grunted and shrugged off the touch. “It’s the common area. I’m allowed to be here for my own reasons.”

“Right, of course, er…” Iida frowned and leaned in to peer at him. “My apologies. Your name…?” Bakugo’s eye twitched and within a second he had spun around to face Iida, both arms raised and sparking.

“You fucking forgot my name you square-faced bastard?!

“You’re one to talk,” Sero muttered.

“I’m sorry!” Iida hastily waved his hand in a placating gesture. “I assure you, it is simply a result of my amnesia-!”

“It’s ok, Iida.” Midoriya grasped one arm to calm him. “Kacchan’s just like that.”

“Er, right then!” Iida dropped his arms to give Bakugo a nervous smile. “I will do my utmost best to not forget your name again, Kacchan!”

Shouji swooped in just in time to catch Bakugo around the waist before he hurled himself screaming at Iida. He lifted Bakugo off the ground, explosions and all, while forming a mouth to move over toward Iida.

“This is Bakugo,” The mouth informed him as the rest of Shouji’s attention was diverted into holding Bakugo away from anything or anyone fragile. “His name is Bakugo.”

“Oh, um, understood!” Iida answered. He then turned to Midoriya, some of the terror on his expression changing to befuddlement. “Then who is Kacchan?”

“I’M GOING TO KILL YOU ALL!” Bakugo screeched as he tried to crawl out of Shouji’s several arms holding him back.

“We’re gonna take Iida up to his dorm now!” Midoriya announced as he planted his hands against Iida’s back and began to push him down the hall at a hasty trot. “See if he, remembers anything! Um, catch you guys later!”

“Wait for me!!” Uraraka called out with a forced cheerfulness as she followed after them.

“Is it-” Iida winced as a particularly loud explosion sounded behind them. “Is it ok to leave them alone?”

“It’ll be fine. Bakugo’s just like that.”

“I see.”

“Well?” Midoriya prompted. Iida scanned around his room, hands planted on his hips.

“There doesn’t seem to be anything strange here,” He finally commented. “Everything looks to be very orderly.” He looked over at the shelves of glasses, then seemed to give a little nod in approval. He turned to the bookshelves lining the wall, and took several moments to scan over the titles.

“…Ah!” He crossed his arms and brought one fist to his chin. “Yes, sorted by subject, then author.

“Is it familiar?” Midoriya asked. Iida shook his head.

“It is, how to explain…I feel comfortable and at ease here. I think my body finds it a familiar environment, but I cannot actually remember any moments spent here.”

“Hey how about this?!” Uraraka swept across the room to grab some framed photos off the desk. She spun around to push them into Iida’s face. “Look it’s us! Do you remember?”

“Well, that certainly looks like me.” Iida took the photo to study it closer. “Ah, we all look so happy. Is it, someone’s birthday?”

“Yeah!” Uraraka nodded vigorously, eyes bright. “How could you tell? Do you remember?”

“Er, no, I was going by the hats we are all wearing.” Iida pointed out the conical paper hat on his own head. “Since, er, Todoroki was it? Since he is in the center, I assume it is his birthday?”

“Oh, yeah…” Uraraka sighed, then smiled. “It was a fun day! We went to a soba place to celebrate!”

“I see.” Iida glanced down at the other photo Uraraka had pushed into his hand. “Who is this man in the photo with me? A relative?”

“That’s your brother!” Midoriya scooted in to point at the photo. The picture featured just the two brothers, with the elder’s hands clapped on Iida’s as they both gave the same broad grin. “Iida Tensei, your older brother.”

“Ah, of course!” He fell silent. “…He is…well, I assume? He’s, alive, right?”

“Wh-yes!” Midoriya yelped. “He’s alive! You talked to him last week! Why…Why do you ask?”

“I don’t know.” Iida returned the picture back to the desk. “I was hit with a brief melancholy for some reason.”

“Oh…” Midoriya ducked his head down to study the desk. He couldn’t help but notice, Iida had set the frame exactly where it had been before.

Iida began to look over the contents of his desk, opening the various drawers to examine the contents. He spotted a neatly folded paper and pulled it out. His eyes lit up as he unfolded it.

“Ah, how fortunate!” He looked down, raising one foot to examine his calves. “This is instructions for engine care and maintenance. “I would hate to give myself improper care during this time.” He bent down to pull up the cuffs and better see the exhaust piping. “To be honest, I was actually quite worried when I saw these. Are they, can they be submerged in water?”

“Um, yes.” Midoriya answered, “I mean, you don’t seem to have trouble in the pool or baths.”

“I assume they have an ‘on’ mechanic?” Iida lightly tapped one with his palm, frowning. “I wouldn’t want to accidentally activate them. That could be rude!”

“Well usually you just,” Uraraka did a little trot-in-place motion, “-run. Though you can also do this like, really fast thingy?”

“Really fast thingy?” Iida echoed.

“Recipro-burst!” Midoriya piped up, raising one finger as his eyes sparked with excitement. “A short burst of intense speed! Faster than the eye can follow! But it leads to a cooldown period where you can’t move.”

“Ah, well,” Iida’s eyebrows drew together as he lifted one leg, then the other, “I haven’t the faintest idea how I would…maybe I just-” Both of his engines released a short burst of smoke which promptly threw him right off his feet, flipping him over before he hit the ground on his stomach. Midoriya winced, then leaned over as Iida groaned and pushed himself up.

“Maybe we should call your brother?”

Notes:

They did try calling Tensei. Midoriya will never forget the five solid minutes of Ingenium laughing himself to death over the phone.
"He lost EVERYTHING? He did WHAT??"

Iida: Who's that?
Midoriya: Oh that's Kacchan
Shouji: (already seeing the disaster a mile away and hastily shoving Sero and Kaminari aside)
