Work Text:
She has been infatuated with Trucy Wright since the first day they met, and, whilst her stomach-flipping attraction may have died down, real, deep feelings for Trucy have blossomed. She just adores Trucy so much; she loves Trucy’s smile and her incredibly odd dress sense and the way she does magic tricks with immense skill all the time.
Trucy, who is an open and proud lesbian, was the one who made Athena realise that she loves girls as well as boys. Before she met Trucy, she never fell for girls. But Trucy… Plus, both she and Trucy are autistic and they know how to help each other with the problems their autism can cause in their daily lives, and… they’re just perfect for each other.
And… at the age of twenty one, Athena comes to a conclusion. She loves Trucy deeply, and wants to be more than just girlfriends. Athena… wants to marry Trucy. She wants Trucy to be her wife.
But there is one… barrier. Trucy happens to be the daughter of Athena’s boss, Phoenix Wright. And Phoenix is an incredibly protective father. He was incredibly defensive when Athena first asked Trucy out, but calmed down after a few hours; eventually, he smiled and gave his blessing and said if his daughter had to date anyone, he was glad it was a person like Athena, a person he knows and trusts. And Athena grinned and hugged him, making Apollo laugh awkwardly.
So she knows Phoenix likes their relationship and trusts her to care for Trucy, but… marriage is a bit different to dating. Which is why Athena comes up with a plan: she will go to Phoenix in private and ask his permission to marry Trucy, allowing him time to react and calm down before Trucy gets involved. So, by the time she gets to propose to Trucy, Phoenix will be calm and happy for them.
At least, that’s the plan.

“What are you doing over there, Athena?” Phoenix says without looking up from his notebook.
“How did you know I was here?” Athena asks, poking her head around the doorframe and into the main office at the Wright Anything Agency.
“You’re not as good as hiding as you think you are. I’m really busy, so can you either tell me what you want or leave me be?”
“Oh, s-sure thing, Boss,” she says, and she wanders into the room. Her heart starts racing, and Athena approaches Phoenix as slowly as she can.
Her boss looks up from his laptop, frowning in confusion. “You look a nervous wreck. What’s going on?”
“Um… I…”
SHE NEEDS TO ASK YOU SOMETHING, Widget interjects, and Athena blushes.
Phoenix rests his chin on his hand, his inquisitive stare boring into her. “Okay, seriously, what’s up with you, Athena?”
“I, uh, the thing is…” In the end, Athena resorts to what she does best: being a loudmouth and blurting things out before she finishes about them. “Hey, Boss, can I marry your daughter?”
If she wasn’t so nervous, she would laugh her head off at Phoenix’s reaction. He flinches backwards, his eyes widening, and his elbow slips off of his desk, the jolt almost making him fall out of his chair. He gets to his feet, looking like he just saw a ghost.
“Wh-What did you say?” Phoenix says.
Her face radiating heat, Athena says, “I, um, I wanted to ask for your… blessing so I can ask Trucy to marry me.”
Phoenix looks at her, smoothing his hair back from where it flopped onto his forehead. “Are… are you sure about this, Athena? I know this is coming from someone who’s never been married, but… marriage is a huge commitment. And… you’re both so young.”
“I am sure, Boss,” she says, nodding (and wringing her hands together behind her back). “We’ve been together for three years and I’ve never loved anyone as much as I love Trucy. And I’ve got a steady job – as long as you don’t fire me – and other than you and Apollo I know her the best and… I don’t expect an immediate answer, Boss. I know this is a huge thing for you. She’s your only kid, you know? But… can you please think about it? And… I really will respect what you say. If you truly don’t want me to marry your daughter…” She exhales slowly. “I won’t do it, at least not for a few more years. Really.”
“You really mean that?” Phoenix says. “Look, Athena, even if I don’t like it, I can’t stop you proposing to Trucy. But…” He smiles, that same sort of grin he gets in the defendant lobby after they win a case. “Just for the record… I give my… blessing or whatever the hell you’re supposed to say.”
“Really?”
He nods. “Really. You can propose to Trucy. And… I’m sure she’ll say yes. She’s crazy about you.”
Athena stares at Phoenix – and a huge grin spreads across her face.
“Thanks, Boss!” she yells, leaping at him and hugging him so tight Phoenix staggers backwards. “Thank you so much.”

Trucy stares at Athena.
She stares at Athena, on one knee in front of her.
She stares at Athena, an awkward smile on her flushed face.
She stares at Athena, a small, red box in her hand.
Is this… what she thinks it is?
“Trucy,” Athena says, grinning as Widget flashes bright green. “Will you… marry me?”
This is what she thought it is!
As her chest seems to flutter inside of her, a smile appears on Trucy’s face. “Athena?”
Athena flicks her hand and the box opens, revealing a ring. The band is thin and golden, and a bright blue stone sparkles in the middle, a blue stone almost exactly the same shade of blue as Trucy’s hat. It is… beautiful.
Her eyes flick from the ring to Athena’s smiling face, and Trucy slow, firmly nods her head. “Athena, I… of course I’ll marry you!”
And then she’s grabbing Athena’s wrist and pulling her girlfriend – her fiancée – to her feet and wrapping her in the tightest hug ever, pressing her face into Athena’s neck.
When Athena finally manages to wriggle out of Trucy’s iron grip, she slips the ring onto Trucy’s finger.
“It’s a perfect fit,” Trucy says, staring at the gem in the centre of the engagement ring. “Thank you so much for this.”
“No problem, Truce,” Athena says, giving her a soft, sweet, happy kiss. “And thanks for saying yes.”
