    Chap 4:

"Mr. Kent, I am under the impression you are not here of your own volition. Am I right?"

For the first time since the start of the conversation, Clark focused his eyes on the woman in the room. "That's an interesting question, Mrs. Lin. That reasoning implies that people exist and do things because they want to. Do you actually believe that?"

The woman opened her mouth, but Clark interrupted her with an angry hand wave, something out of character. "Most people don't end up being the person they wanted to be. We don't even get a vote on how, when or even if we want to be born. We are all pulled into the world against our wishes and we make do with our circumstances."

    Chap 11:

For once, Lex wasn't doing anything wicked or unlawful.

He was tending his own business in his conference room, calmly and carefully planning, with his lackey board members, a takeover of an annoying industry rival.

    All perfectly legal. All business-appropriate.

And the expensive wall-wide window got smashed to pieces; a green-clothed archer landed squarely on his conference table, unashamed at the chaos he'd just wrecked on Lex's everyday life.

    Chap 15:

    "Don't you feel alone here?"

"I'm always alone," J'onn replied in a calm tone. "When I lost everyone, I realized a lot of things."

J'onn looked at Bruce with a very steady face. "The first truth I reached is that I'm alone. No matter how much any entity, community or world means to me, they are not me. I am alone to face life and death; nobody else can take my place, nor can they know who or what exactly I am."

Bruce appeared perplexed at J'onn's speech, as he had expected the opposite.

J'onn smiled, sad and long-lived, a crisp reminder that he had lived far longer than anyone else in the Justice League. "Knowing that I am alone, from the start until the end, means that any relationships in this world are finite; they will survive my death; likewise, I will survive their deaths. As beings alone in this vast universe, the second truth is that we can forge relationships regardless of what anyone once meant to us; I survived my family's death because I could find nourishment to sustain myself elsewhere. It took me a long time to realize that surviving a tragedy meant reconnecting with others in ways I once thought impossible. Humans don't have mind exchange we, Martians, have, but we can relate to each other on some levels; even if it's no replacement for what I lost, it's enough to nourish me and help me grow in ways that I never thought possible."

Bruce listened to J'onn, waiting for the advice or the judgment to fall like an axe on his head. It never came. Instead, J'onn talked about the last truth he had realized when he had lost everything.

"The third truth is that I can't forgive or forget everything that happened, nor do I want to. But I get to choose what I can forgive, even myself surviving when everyone else died."
