Work Text:
Its been four years since Nakahara Chuuya had left the Port Mafia.
Seven years, since Dazai Osamu had fallen for him.
Dazai Osamu, the Demon Prodigy, youngest Port Mafia Executive at the age of 18, had fallen for his partner, Nakahara Chuuya.
It was funny, given that Dazai doesn’t let his feelings show. Funny, how Dazai had kept his emotions locked inside him. It was amusing to see the Demon Prodigy fall for his partner, who later on had betrayed the very organization that had accepted him for the first time, without even giving any explanation to Dazai or anyone else.
Up until now, while standing at the edge of the roof of Port Mafia Headquarters, as Dazai watches the cars and people going on their way and passing by, he can vividly remember Nakahara Chuuya’s victorious smile.
He can clearly hear his laugh, whenever Dazai had joked about how weak their opponents compared to them. When Dazai talks about the silly things he did and the stupid stunts he do.
When Dazai caught the red head staring at him, Chuuya’s cheeks flushed as he got caught staring. How Dazai flashed him a dashing smile and a wink that earns him a flying shoes in the face, but even so, Dazai laughed, loud and happy as the other keeps on screaming profanities at him and threats on how he’ll kill Dazai when he have a chance.
A smile had graced Dazai’s lips as he remembers how Chuuya used to haul his lazy ass off the couch to get their work done. Oh, how he miss those times when things are still easy, when they were still together. How the other always reminds him to ‘stop fucking drowning yourself in liquor and fucking eat the food I cooked for you, mackerel.’
But now, those things are part of the past.
Earlier this evening while he was drinking alone in Lupin, a group of detectives had decided to take a break from work and have a few drinks before heading out again. One of those detectives are so familiar to Dazai as the detective’s distinct orange hair and striking azure eyes had rooted Dazai on his spot. The other two that’s with the red head doesn’t noticed Dazai’s presence. Chuuya did though, and half a minute later, the redhead had stood up from their table to order their drink. He sat three seats away from Dazai that had made the Demon Prodigy chuckle. Chuuya just gave him a questioning glance, eyebrow raised and azure eyes slightly squinted.
“You really didn’t grow, chibi. You’re still as small as the last time I saw you.”
This made the red head frown as he glares at him. At this point, Dazai had expecting a sharp retort from the other as he watched the glint of recognition in those beautiful eyes. But what had surprised him was the cold harsh stare that Chuuya gave him, before speaking in a low voice.
“Don’t talk as if you know me. There’s no reason to an enemy to call me that way.”
The words stung, as it dawns on him that Chuuya no longer remembers him. It made Dazai’s unbandage eye widen, mouth slightly open in shock as he incredibly stares at Chuuya. The man didn’t have the luxury to ask anything as the red head had left his seat and call his colleagues, telling them that they can look for other place that sell drinks instead of here. As the red head turns his back on him, Dazai tried to reach out to him, but he was too late. The other had left him again, and this time, all the rational thinking had left Dazai’s mind as his already broken heart breaks even more. He left the bartender after paying a generous tip, with the thought of suicide in mind as he made his way back to the headquarters, brown eyes cold and lifeless.
He already left the book on his desk for Akutagawa to see, a note was attached to the cover, giving his most loyal man instructions on what he should do once Dazai was gone. As he closes his eyes and let himself tip over the edge, the last thing was on his mind was:
“I’m so glad I’ve seen you again before I go. I regret not coming after you, but Chuuya…
You look so happy in wherever you are right now, and I’m not selfish enough to rob that from you.”
“I love you.”
