Work Text:
As Yamada walks into the hospital room, he frowns at how bright it is as the sun reflects off all of the white in the room. Putting the flowers down on a table with all of the other balloons and cheesy get well soon cards, Yamada walks over to the window and closes it, making the room a little more bearable. Sighing, he walks over to the bed Shouta is lying in and pulls over a chair from the wall. Sitting, he stares.
Memories from when Iida had run into UA, frantically calling all of the teachers to the USJ because of a villain attack.
When Iida said he didn’t know how much longer Aizawa and Thirteen could hold out.
When Yamada could only remember an overwhelming amount of fear wash over him as he went numb.
When he dropped the rest of his afternoon classes to get to the USJ as soon as possible.
When he finally got there and All Might was severely injured and the fight was already over.
When Yamada frantically searched for Aizawa and found him bleeding out on the ground unconscious and not responding with Izuku trying to keep him alive and from bleeding out before help came.
When Yamada and Izuku rode in the ambulance and Yamada almost threw up as the EMTs had to use a defibrillator to try and keep Shouta’s heart going before they got to the hospital.
When Yamada and Izuku were told that Shouta flatlined two times before they could get him in a stable enough condition to work on and heal his injuries from the fight.
When Yamada didn’t leave the hospital and sat in the waiting room with Izuku as the two just stared at each other, hoping Shouta would be okay while Izuku’s hands were still covered in blood and his cheeks lined with tears.
When Yamada forced Izuku to leave with Uraraka and Iida so he could eat something for the first time since the attack and try to get a good night's sleep and clean up while he didn’t do the same and sat in the waiting room until the next morning when the nurse said that he was finally able to visit Shouta for the first time since surgery.
When, after two days of going in and out of the waiting room to visit Shouta, Yamada was forced to go home by Nemuri, who promised to call him if Shouta woke up and threatened to use her quirk on him if he didn’t go home, eat, take a shower, and clean up and check up on Izuku.
When Yamada went home and finally showered, ate, and slept, although he didn’t sleep for long due to the nightmares haunting him as he woke up, hoping they were just that, nightmares, but as Aizawa’s scarf laid next to him, he got up and put on his home clothes and went back to the hospital and asked Nemuri if she could use her quirk on him; and when she declined, Izuku came back and Yamada tried his best to put on a brave face but was too exhausted to do so and the two just talked about what happened, Yamada hoping it helped the boy.
When Yamada was told that Aizawa may never be able to see again.
And when, finally, Yamada was the last one in Shouta’s room that day and put down the flowers and closed the blinds and sat down next to Shouta and held his hand as he began to sing to Shouta.
“In the blink of an eye, just a whisper of smoke, you could lose everything, the truth is you never know. Let's take our time to say what we want. Use what we got before it's all gone...'Cause no, we're not promised tomorrow.” Yamada clenches his teeth together as tears begin to roll down his cheeks. Taking a shaky breath, he continues. “I woke up in tears, you weren’t by my side…” Yamada lets out a sob. “No, we're not promised a tomorrow.” Yamada’s voice cracks and he lowers his head. “Come on, Shouta. Wake up. I can’t let our last words to each other be ones from an argument.” Yamada laughs bitterly. “I can’t even remember what we were fighting about.”
Yamada’s head shoots up as Shouta begins to cough. Yamada takes one of his hands and places it on Shouta’s back to help him sit up, still making sure to keep holding his hand.
“Hey, hey,” Yamada whispers, rubbing Shouta’s back. “You’re okay. You’re in the hospital. It’s only been a few days since you were knocked out. All the kids got out safe, I promise.” As Shouta’s coughing ceases, he groans.
“I-Iz-” Shouta tries, but Yamada shakes his head.
“Doctors said try not to speak. Izuku is fine, though. He was able to keep you alive and gain Yagi sometime before he got there.” Shouta begins to nod and put pressure against Yamada’s hand on his back, signaling that he wanted to lay back down. As Yamada slowly lowers him back down, Shouta sighs. Reaching over to the table, Yamada grabs a glass of water and helps Shouta drink a little. When he pulls it back, Shouta squeezes his hand.
“I’m sorry,” Shouta whispers. Yamada smiles as a few more tears make it down his cheeks.
“I’m sorry too.”
“It was,” Shouta starts, taking a breath. “Not staying out so late for patrol.” Shouta manages to get out.
“You’re definitely won’t be going out anytime soon, I hope you know.” Yamada laughs and Shouta nods. Yamada lowers his head again. “Don’t scare me like that ever again, promise?” Shouta hums.
“Promise." The two sit in silence before Aizawa speaks up again. "And why is it so bright?" Aizawa grumbles. Yamada chuckles.
"It's a hospital room. I closed the blinds, though." Aizawa reaches up to his left eye and moves the bandage away from it. Yamada can practically see the frown on his face.
"You look like shit. When was the last time you got any good sleep?" Yamada chuckles.
"A while."
"Well, now that you know I'm okay, you can relax, alright." Yamada nods.
"Alright."
