Chapter 9: Tuck Tail and Run

Chapter Text

Charon was a man of simple pleasures.

For instance, sipping tea and gazing out of his personal office’s viewpoint to his vast metal kingdom were just a few of his favorite pastimes. What was his favorite, you may ask?

His ultimate favorite was making his infantile assistant squirm.

“and did they disclose the details of this…accident, Anderson?” Charon asked, trying to hide a satisfied smirk behind his cup of earl gray.

Anderson--a twitchy boy not yet shy of twenty two, he supposed--swallowed.

“I’m afraid not, sir. Not beyond the description in the debriefing, sir.” The young man continued to look at something beyond Charon’s head in a frail attempt to avoid his gaze.

Anderson came to him highly recommended, with his skyrocketed IQ, primped and preened resume, and expensive suits…yet what he carried in mind, he desperately lacked in charm.

“The geek-the analysis team, I mean, excuse me—they request you meet them on the tech floor. They say it’s urgent.”

“What could be so urgent to interrupt my mid-afternoon meditation?”

Anderson blinked his ever irritating, deer in the headlights blink. “Unfortunately I’m not sure, sir, they wouldn’t disclose to me any details—“

“They expect to see me, at this very moment and time? Without an appointment ?”

Anderson visibly began to sweat, beads forming on his large forehead. “I—“

Charon heaved a sorrowful sigh, nudging right by his stuttering assistant across the room to his authentic chinese tea kettle. The kettle was a congratulatory gift from the Yutani family for his newly appointed leadership. A enraged dragon was carved into its smooth steel exterior, intricate crimson flames pouring out of its jaws. Charon poured himself another cup and admired the fierce artistry for a tentative moment. What’s life without a little fun?

“Report back that I will be arriving approximately five minutes from now. I expect this supposed emergency meeting to not be a waste of my precious time, for if it is, I will fully put the blame where it’s earned. On you.”

Anderson swiftly nodded and scurried out, tail tucked between his little legs.

The man who owned everything but the stars smiled. How he adored the view.
