Izuku is a dimension hopper hunting down stolen life-saving technology. A rough jump with an equally rough landing leaves him helpless and crippled in a strange new world. Unlike any other dimension he's crossed however, here... people have superpowers?! Well, quirks, but still!

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Boy howdy I am SO HAPPY to finally release(heh) this!! This is one of my all-time favorite fanfics, and I've read it numerous times. As a bonus, IceEckos happens to be one of my favorite authors, especially in regards to simple but subtextual characterizations.
I made cover art for this podfic, yes. Since drawing it I already dislike how it looks but I'm sure that's also just artist's perspective and you all will like it just fine! Please let me know how the audio sounds and how the reading turned out. I tried pretty hard to do the impact moments properly! All works that I record will have swear words replaced with suitable alternatives.

The title of this fic is referencing Mark Antony's soliloquy over the body of Julius Caesar, who was stabbed 23 times by a group of his own senators. Antony mourns and calls for revenge, rallying with the thought that Caesar's spirit cries for justice, cries out for the people to let go of the leash that keeps the fervor of war under control and to reap their dues. If you assume Izuku plays Antony's role in this fanfic, the title provides an incredibly rich and deep meaning via allusion. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Chapter 1 Summary:

Tsukauchi lowers his hand and finally looks Izuku dead in the eyes. His expression is hunted and a little wild. “You said…you’re here because you’re looking for stolen tech?”
“Yeah.” Izuku hesitates, then decides to go for it. In for a penny, in for a pound. “You wouldn’t happen to know anyone who’s like, ridiculously overpowered, would you? He’d be quasi-immortal, super smart, kind of a massive pill. Anyone like that ring a bell?”
Tsukauchi stops looking so freaked out. He blinks a couple of times, frowns, and then leans forward in his seat.
“Yeah,” Tsukauchi says slowly. “Yeah, I think I might.”

Chapter 2 Summary:

Finally Yagi, who has been buzzing in his seat for the past minute, shoots up. “Wait, wait, wait. ” He turns to look incredulously at Tsukauchi. “You believe this?”
Tsukauchi jerks his chin. “He’s telling the truth.”
“That’s—!” Yagi looks furiously at Izuku and then says furtively, as though determined to pretend that Izuku is not in the room, “You told me yourself, just because someone’s telling the truth doesn’t make it true! It could just be their truth.”
Tsukauchi crosses his arms and orders, “Midoriya-kun, show him the technology.”

Chapter 3 Summary:

“I…well, no offense Midoriya-shounen, but you’re from another dimension. Are you so sure you can blend in with the other kids?”
“Oh, don’t worry about that, I can figure it out.” Izuku shrugs dismissively. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d gone undercover in a dimension, just the first time he’s had allies helping him. “I’m asking if you think it’s a good idea.”
Yagi’s jaw works silently, as though he’s trying to come with some argument against it but can’t. His shoulders slump in resignation. “I really don’t have a better idea,” He admits.
“Well, that’s settled then,” Tsukauchi says almost cheerfully, clapping his hands together. “Now we just need to run this by Nedzu.”
“Oh, right.” Yagi says faintly, suddenly going pale. “I forgot about that.”

Chapter 4 Summary:

“Is your hair a result of your quirk?” Izuku asks. “Or is it just a genetic thing?”
Todoroki just stares at him, eyebrows furrowing a little bit. It takes Izuku a second to realize that the other three are now staring at Izuku too, like he’s just spoken in Greek or something. His confidence withers, and he nervously checks the front of his shirt, just in case he’s dropped something onto it.
“What?” He asks finally.
Todoroki blinks and says, very slowly, “I’m Todoroki Shouto.”
Jeez, Izuku hopes that this kid isn’t super famous or anything. The name ‘Todoroki’ sounds vaguely familiar, but he’s been doing so much research over the past week that it really doesn’t mean anything. “Uh, yeah. Is that supposed to mean anything to me? I come from Kyoto, after all…”
“Dude,” Jirou says, more amused than anything, leaning her cheek against her palm. “He’s the son of the number two hero in the country. He got his butt kicked by the number one kid in the class on live television. He’s like, super famous.”
Ah, well.
Crap.

Notes:

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ This chapter has some of my favorite scenes, what with the interactions between the 1-A kids. Also just any scene with Hitoshi in it. Hitoshi is my favorite U.A. student so any scene that has him in it is automatically a scene I love.
Also I absolutely adore Izuku's blow up in the car. That scene and that writing is just so utterly real and accurate to life(both with what Yagi suggests and what Izuku tells him). It is a conversation that would totally happen if that situation was real. Yagi's unintentional insensitivity? Fantastic. It is also probably the biggest turning point in Izuku and Yagi's relationship. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Chapter 5 Summary:

“Todoroki-san,” He says. “Can I talk to you?”
Todoroki just looks at him for a moment, blinking as though he isn’t sure whether or not Izuku is actually talking to him. Then he raises his eyebrow. “Aren’t you doing that already?”
Izuku rolls his eyes but can’t suppress a smile. He plops into the desk beside Todoroki. “Can I offer you a suggestion about your quirk?”
As soon as Izuku says that, Todoroki’s whole face shuts down. Any trace of emotion vanishes as though it had never been. “I’m not so sure that’s a good idea.”
“I disagree.” Izuku says, pulling his notebook out from under his arm. Todoroki’s eyes widen, but Izuku ignores his disbelief. He knows it’s rude, but he can’t quite bring himself to care.

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ The tracking of the conversation with Shoto during the confrontation is wonderful. How Izuku's whole attitude changes when he gets more information, how he shifts from his bold attitude to genuinely regretful. It is dang good character work happening behind the scenes there, so I had to point it out. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Chapter 6 Summary:

“Wait, Bakugo-san,” Izuku gasps, wrapping both hands around the other boy’s where they’re still fisted in his collar. “This is all just a misunderstanding, if you let me explain—“
“No!” Bakugo shouts, and Izuku is surprised to see his red eyes grow bright. “No! I’ll effing kill you for wearing his face! I’m—“
Izuku watches in alarm as the boy begins to fall apart in front of him, even as he still has him pressed up against the wall. He’s angry, yes, but fragile as well, brittle enough that something like this is enough to send him off the deep end. What was he to you? He wonders.

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ And here is your confrontation chapter! Oh, Izuku... You didn't think you were the only one, did you? You didn't think that this would be easy?
Regardless, the hysteria is on point and Katsuki's response lends much to the new curiosity of this dimension's Izuku, his fate, and his relationship with Katsuki. We do get those answers in later chapters, so hold on tight! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Chapter 7 Summary:

Shinsou laughs. “You’ve got a really useful quirk.”
Izuku freezes for just a moment, and presses his lips together.
Right. His quirk. His non-existent quirk, which these kids relied on to help them improve.
Suddenly, the idea of deceiving these kids of his true nature feels...wrong. But what can he do about it? It’s not like he’ll know them long enough to tell them the truth.
The idea of leaving them, of returning to his own world where things are dark and dire, and there’s no soft-serve or kind students, hits him hard. It’s so nice here, so easy to relax and forget that things won’t be, can’t be this way forever. He has responsibilities to all the sick and dying people he left behind.
“Yeah,” Izuku says hollowly. “Yeah.”

Notes:

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Remember how I mentioned Izuku's views on trust and relationships? Yeah here it comes up once againnnnn. This is the first solid time we see him fighting with his desires, denying himself the possibility of staying so he doesn't dream too much. He doesn't want to fly too close to the sun, only to fall like Icarus fell. This is a very mature thought process, even if we all want Izuku to be happy... not reasonable!
He mentioned the biological enhancements earlier on but the reason he can feel like he belongs among these children is because, despite rapid maturing, he is still a kid. This is emphasized by the fact that he never got a childhood, so when he finally gets to do these simple things, it doesn't matter the age of who he's with. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Izuku lets out a low, slow breath, and turns to face All for One. Though he can’t see the man’s face through the mask, Izuku can practically feel the surprise.
Izuku lifts his chin, lets All for One see the defiance in his eyes.
You thought you’d left me behind, hadn’t you? You thought wrong. So long ago you called me a blindly loyal dog, faithfully following my masters until the end, but you were wrong.
I am the dog of war who’s been nipping at your heels all this time. And I was always going to find you.

Chapter 9 Summary:

“Tomura,” All for One says, and Izuku’s hands drop, his breath catching in his throat. Because when Izuku was the doctor’s apprentice, when they were working together day after day, he never sounded like that. Emotional. Like he actually cared. “You will continue this war.”
Izuku wants to scream at Shigaraki as the portal slams shut, as the villains disappear from view. He wants to ask, how did you do it? How the heck did you convince him to care?
Because maybe if he had been able to do the same thing—
Could he have stopped this?
It’s too late, Izuku tells himself, shaking the burn from his eyes and cracking his whip against the concrete, hearing it rumble and growl. It’s too late. I’ll never know.
“So you found me,” All for One says, far too close. Izuku looks up, and finds himself face to face with the mask. With the doctor. "Let's talk."

Notes:

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ This chapter R E N D S me, like wow. Tsukauchi's mercenary comment will come up later and does have a marked effect on Izuku's self worth, not that either of them would know that now.
The confrontation is fantastic. 10/10 dealing with Shiggy and the AFO vs Izuku face off/fight has a great level of give-and-take between a clearly outmatched Izuku and his very powerful enemy, all in a believable fashion.
The end of this chapter is one of my all-time favorite pieces of writing. There's so much to unpack(heh) but I think the unreliable narrator trope really comes into play here, specifically. I have to note though, it isn't really even unreliable narrator because this flashback is pretty darn neutral, but I suppose that makes it a trust-in-the-narrator issue. Absolutely fascinating.
Anyhoo, I don't believe the doctor's deflection. I think his answer was scorchingly honest. If it was, then this scene is a worldbuilding scene on more than a surface level because it shows the doctor opening up and Izuku shooting him down(something we saw happen earlier as well with the "are people worth saving" conversation). Their relationship went wrong somewhere along the way, which Izuku mourns when Shiggy gets warped(seen in the chapter summary). Izuku had given the doctor reasons not to love him(not that that is a justifying statement in ANY capacity). It also reminds us that—genius or not, biological modifications or not—Izuku is still a child.
Just... KDLFJGKDFG PLEASE LISTEN TO THE END OF THIS CHAPTER I LOVE IT SO MUCH AND I TRIED SO HARD KSFJGD~~ I chose not to make that the chapter summary because I really really want you guys to hear it and get the full effect that way. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Chapter 10 Summary:

“Shinsou,” She says. Iida looks away. “You’re the only one who can help him. Please, Shinsou.”
Shinsou stares at her for a second with his wide, purple eyes. He looks to Shouto, who stares back anxiously, who has never asked for anything else before this. He looks to Iida, whose gaze is fixed somewhere far away. And finally, he looks to Kirishima.
“We got you, dude,” Kirishima says encouragingly. “We’ll be right there next to you.”
Shinsou doesn’t look reassured, though. The desperate hope on his face is fading, replaced with resignation and betrayal. He looks as though they’re forcing him to sign his death warrant.
Shinsou looks over the wall, and finally sees Midoriya.
His steps stutter; he puts his hand on the wall and rocks forward a little. “Midoriya,” He whispers.

Chapter 11 Summary:

“Well, you’ve got what you came for,” Todoroki says suddenly, and although his voice is quiet it pierces the clamor of voices like an arrow. “Are you going to go back to your dimension?”
The other students hush into silence. They’re all watching Izuku except for Todoroki, who hasn’t moved from his position against the wall. He seems like he’s a thousand miles away, though. Izuku desperately wants to reach out to him, but he doesn’t dare. The set of Todoroki’s shoulders is too fragile.
“Yes,” He admits, and it feels like he's just ripped his heart in two.

Notes:

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Izuku's self worth issues have almost come to a head here, his banishment-induced belief that he doesn't belong, doesn't get to belong. I've been building this up and pointing this out, starting in chapter 3. This whole fic he has been longing for a family. Ever since Inko died, at least. the doctor, Yagi, 1-A... his soul is crying out for a family. Why would anyone care for him? Why would they want him?
Well Izuku... that's not how people here work. And the thing is, he knows it. That's why saying he is leaving out loud hits so much, it makes it real. He knows that if that love the others have for him is quantified in words it will be real too. If anyone asks him to stay, if they were to get the question out, his walls would break down. KJLdfksdf IceEckos is fantastic and I could wax poetic on this topic but I'm limiting myself so I can post the last chapter tonight too lol ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

  I am just tickled pink kflgdj I know release the dogs of war isn’t a very well known work, but it has claimed all of my heart and soul(made even better by IceEckos being as amazing as they are tbh).
  I’ve purposefully lined up my release order to be the way it is~ once forgotten, twice removed is a significantly more popular work in its original form, so it gets to be cuddled up on my feed by release. The next fic I’m dropping is super well-known, so if anyone finds me through it they’ll see release and once forgotten. Hopefully this will allow some more people to discover IceEckos and blueh!!!
  Whoops sorry for the ramble there~ please please let me know what you think of the chapters as you get father along in your listening!     I take a lot of pride in getting to talk to and work with creators, so giving proper credit is a huge no-brainer for me, haha! As of now I have no plans to create anything original, so everything I post will be a derivative work. I enjoy reading others’ work and bringing attention to people who deserve it(that and I write best when I’m doing analysis, it is easiest for me, and I don’t have the energy to put in the legwork to write fanfic myself)! I’m super glad that you were able to discover the lovely IceEckos12 through me, it seems, and that you got to read their absolutely amazing fic!!!   In my defense, I remember comments and who gives them but my brain never ever registers which fic is actually receiving the comment... because I guess I think of all of this as being me, so all the comments are intended for me, and not so much the recording?? Because I am the recording, in every way. So. Uh. I love seeing you, and when I scrolled down to reply to the next neglected comment and saw a glimpse of a brown square my brain immediately went "Oh crap" xD
  ... *takes this opportunity to scroll down and see if you commented a follow-up on this fic* Ah, excellent! How did you like this one, did you get around to listening to it? I'm thinking of redoing it now that I've gotten way better at podficcing. Or, well, checking through the emotional stuff to see if I can perform better now. I'm terrible at remembering to comment because I usually have these things playing while I'm focused on another project, so sorry I wasn't able to leave more of these throughout, but this fic is so freaking good. Everything builds up perfectly and stays consistent with its own themes. I friggin love the world building surrounding Izuku's dimension (I'm a sucker for dystopian concepts) and AfO. The ending was great. I had to leave just before I got to the last chapter, and was very excited to get back to it
I'm really glad you were able to introduce this fic somewhere I could find it and that you're the one reading it. You're my favorite podfic reader <3

I’m S H R I E K I N G this is great!!!
My favorite parts are “Tsukauchi: these are illegible. Midoriya: no???” And they’re both so confused, I loved listening to it, and also “Midoriya: the smart rat... is literally a smart rat what???” This is so great I love listening to this!
I’m also SUPER excited to see whatever your next release will be, and may I just say that I am REALLY glad that you release the entire fic at once instead of in pieces? Because it makes it super easy to listen to when I don’t have to wait ages for the next chapter! :D

  I was really pleased to read the illegible conversation because getting the tone of Izuku’s no???? was SO much fun, I love stuff like that, where a little shift in tone or inserting a pause adds to the life of the reading! Mastering that is how one improves their vocal reading skills. And oh boy if you are liking my podfics like it seems you do you are, in fact, going to be very pleased about the next release. Seeing your comment has actually expedited said release, it got me excited and I knocked out another good 7 chapters of its recording earlier today, with more to come after I finish this comment~
  Also something I decided when I started this whole thing(which was only 5 weeks ago, wow) was that, as much as was possible, I wanted to release the full podfic at once. So many podfics have a few chapters recorded and then they die off(which is valid and understandable ofc!) and I wanted mine to be complete for the listener. It makes formatting/posting chapters back-to-back a little tedious but I LOVE seeing complete chapter numbers heehee it is something that brings me inordinate amounts of smug joy~~

In like 2 days or something I should be able to release my next podfic, so that works great for everyone! I mean, it’s the longest one yet and has quite a bit of editing left on it so... but the goal is tomorrow! Or something heh~

EEEE! I had ~just~ enough time to listen to this in between classes and I’m so glad I did!!! That last part came out really great, ‘Izuku’s’ voice just sounds so done but ready to fight at the same time and it is GLORIOUS!
Also, I really loved that part in the beginning where Izuku asks about kill shots and Tsukauchi is just like “no???” And he sounds so distraught! And then Izuku is so confused and just ahshhfbdidn I can’t even describe my love for this chapter !
Also, I can’t believe that it’s only been five weeks since you started making podfics, because you already have several out and they are such great quality! You’re doing amazing so far and I am super excited for the next one!!!!!! (and it’s coming out sooner?!?!?!! That’s amazing!!!)

  EEEEEEEEE! Wow, my timing and the timing of your classes must be perfect or something :3 how serendipitous~ And YES goal ACHIEVED! I wasn’t super happy with the final declaration, so I’m relieved that it turned out! And yes gosh I love reading situations and conversations where I can easily express and emote as I so please! Conversations like that, ones that are part-funny part-real, are so much funnnnn and I could record them allll day. I’m VERY glad you loved the chapter!! It has some cool action and it is good that those things stood out enough in my audio!
  Yep, since the end of September. Crazy, huh? I feel so at home doing this too, so it is a win-win for everyone! Thank youuuuuuu for your support and compliments aaa and yep I can, in fact, be bribed into recording with pretty words and sweet nothings lol(It will drop this week, and I’m proud of how the recording sounds do far) :D Stuff like that doesn’t work with everyone but for me it probably does lol.   I actually re-listened to the audio for the end of this chapter thanks to your comment. I wanted to listen vicariously and experience it with you!! :D It did deliver pretty well, huh? Could’ve used an extra half-second or so before the recording end, but one of my pet peeves is podfics where they have pauses at the beginning/end/chapter titles/after author announcement/after reader announcement. Like c’mon guys humans online have a literal 3 second window of patience before we hit Bored and Move On. Let’s speeeeed it all up a tad heehee. Also DANG haunting is such an awesome compliment!!!! Kjdkgfkjfhkg it says so much with so little~~

This is so good, but it hurts my heart. I can just HEAR the emotion when Izuku sees his mom again, when he reaches out to Shouto only for him to walk away. I love listening to this, but my heart is S U F F E R I N G
