For Better or Worse

Summary:

Class 1-A was surprised. Class 1-B was surprised. Hell, even the couple themselves were unsure of how it happened. All they knew what that they were dating against all odds and they were happy together. Now if only their respective classes felt the same way.

Work Text:

Midoriya wasn’t sure how he got here. What sort of cosmic events led to this moment? Where was he, you might ask? Well, he was currently laying under a maple tree with his boyfriend, Kamakiri. It was early autumn and Midoriya watched as the maple leaves turned into rustic colors of red, orange, and yellow. Kamakiri was reading through a book of native insects, the sound of turning pages filled the air. The slight breeze had Midoriya pulling his coat tighter around his body.

Kamakiri noticed and asked, “We can go inside if you want. I don’t want to stay here if you’re cold.”

“I’m fine. You wanted to have a quiet day outside and I’m not going to ruin it.”

“No point in enjoying myself if I know you’re probably freezing. Come on, I’m taking you for a cup of coffee.” Without waiting for an answer, Kamakiri was getting up from the ground and offering Midoriya his hand. He took it and was pulled up from the soft grass. As they were walking out of the park, Kamakiri heard Midoriya let out a small laugh. When asked what was funny, Midoriya answered by pulling a maple leaf out of his boyfriend’s soft hair. They continued on their way to the coffee shop, only stopping once to assist an elderly woman carry her groceries.

When they arrived at the coffee shop, they were greeted by the strong wave of roasted coffee beans and freshly-made pastries. They ordered their drinks and sat at a booth near the window. The first couple of minutes were spent in comfortable silence before Kamakiri broke it by asking, “So, what did you tell your class about what you were doing today?”

“I told them I was heading to town to pick up a gift for my mom for her birthday. They didn’t question it and took the excuse right away. What did you tell your class?”

“I said I was going to look for more insects to add to my collection. Like your class, they didn’t question it and believed me right away.” Kamakiri took a long sip of his coffee and let out a sigh. “Why do we have to do this?”

“What’s wrong, Toga?”

“What’s wrong is that we have to lie to our classes about what’s really going on. I don’t understand why we can’t just come out and say we’re dating.”

“If you want to tell your class about us, go ahead. If you’re ready, I am too. Besides, I’m also tired of having to come up with a new excuse every time we go on a date.” Midoriya wasn’t kidding. The two of them have been dating for three months now and every time they made plans to go somewhere, they both had to tell their classes they were running errands or spending time for themselves. They knew it was a lot to deal with and it would be easier to just come out with the truth, but the tension between class 1-A and 1-B made it difficult. To this day, it still surprised them with how they became an item.

It was during a training session between the two classes. One person from class 1-A was paired up with one person from 1-B and they were to fight each other and give feedback on how the other fought. Midoriya was paired with Kamakiri and the two fought longer than any other team. Kamakiri was able to keep up with Midoriya’s attacks because of his great reflexes and Midoriya was able to ward Kamakiri off with his quick thinking. Eventually, Kamakiri was able to take Midoriya down after he noticed an opening and promptly took it. Instead of letting the defeat get to him, Midoriya responded by congratulating Kamakiri and offering him tips on how he could improve his quirk. One meeting turned to two, and in no time, the two of them had asked each other out and were trying to keep their dating on the down-low.

They tried to tell their classes what was actually going on, but the universe seemed to like to mess up their plans. Todoroki had asked Midoriya where he was going one night, and the greenette was very close to saying on a date with Kamakiri. However, at that moment, Monoma came out of nowhere and started an argument with Todoroki. Not wanting to be late for his date, Midoriya left the two of them behind. In a similar situation, Kamakiri was about to announce his secret to his class when Kaminari and Sero burst through the door. One thing led to another, and there was suddenly a rock-paper-scissors competition between the two classes. Kamakiri quickly forgot about what he was about to do and focused on beating Kaminari.

“How about when we finish our coffee, we head to that new art exhibit that opened up? That sounds like fun.”

“I don’t know about that. Looking at a bunch of old dusty paintings surrounded by pretentious people sounds boring.”

“Come on, Toga, give it a try. If you agree to this, I promise we can go to the bug museum first. I know you’ve been dying to go there.” Midoriya was right. Ever since hearing about the opening of a new bug museum awhile back, Kamakiri has been itching to see it. When brought up with Midoriya, he said they would go as soon as the both of them had time. Plus, if it meant going to the bug museum, Kamakiri can sit through a tour of an art exhibit. If it made Midoriya happy, then it couldn’t be too bad.

“Ok, we’ll go see your art. Only if you promise to keep up your end of the deal.” The smile on Midoriya’s face had Kamakiri's heart-melting. It then exploded when Midoriya leaned over and gave Kamakiri a kiss on the cheek.

“Thank you, Toga. We better hurry if we’re going to see both exhibits before they close.” Midoriya got up from the booth and took Kamakiri’s hand leading him out of the coffee shop. A mile later, they arrived at the museum. As soon as they entered, Midoriya noticed the absolute ecstatic look on his boyfriend’s face. They started with the tropical bugs of South America. From there, they gazed at the many display cases showcasing the different butterflies from around the world. They held hands as they looked at moths, beetles, and spiders. They ended their tour with a long study of the multiple praying mantises they had. The entire time, Midoriya couldn’t take his eyes off his boyfriend and feeling thankful for having him next to him.

After soaking up all they could about the creepy crawlies, they went over to the art exhibit Midoriya mentioned. There, they saw many famous paintings including the classic Mona Lisa and The Persistence of Memory. Whenever Kamakiri asked what a painting was supposed to mean, Midoriya explained the different possibilities and that it was mostly up to the person on how they wanted to interpret it. Though he didn’t really show it, Midoriya knew his boyfriend was enjoying himself. He specifically noticed how intrigued he was when he saw The Scream. Unbeknownst to the couple, a certain dark-feathered avian and his shadowy companion were watching the interaction between the two green-haired students. There was definitely going to be some talk back at school.

As Midoriya and Kamakiri were walking back to the UA campus, Midoriya looked up at the sky. The sun was starting to set and it cast the sky into different shades of orange and pink. Midoriya looked at the way the colors framed Kamakiri’s face and couldn’t resist giving him another kiss on the cheek. Kamakiri didn’t say anything, but blushed and looked away. The rest of the walk was spent in comfortable silence with the two of them holding hands. They did eventually arrive back at the school. Before separating to return to their own classes, they gave each other a kiss goodbye. Midoriya made his way to the dorms and was surprised at what he saw upon entering. The entire class was sitting in the common area. He expected some of them to get ready for bed or already asleep. “What are you guys doing up?”

“We should be asking you the same thing, Midoriya. Where have you been the entire day?” Iida asked Midoriya in the same robotic fashion as always.

“I told you guys, I was in town to buy my mom a present. I took a lot longer than I thought because I couldn’t find the right gift.”

“If you were trying to buy a gift, where is it?”

“I ended up giving up and coming back here. I’ll try again another day. My mom’s birthday isn’t for a couple more weeks.”

“Interesting how you say that when we asked Bakugou when your mother’s birthday was.” Crap, Midoriya knew he was screwed at this point.

“What did Bakugou say?” Midoriya tried to keep the nervous waver out of his voice.

“He says your mother’s birthday was a month ago. So, we’ll ask you again. What were you doing all day?” Midoriya weighed his options. He could try to make a run for it but judging by the look of his classmates surrounding him on all sides, that wouldn’t work. He decided to tell them half the truth and hope they would take it and leave him alone.

“I was in town looking at that new art exhibit.”

“Were you with anyone?”

“Nope, all alone. Nobody but me.” At this point, Midoriya was seriously considering fighting his way out.

“Maybe we should tell him. He’s obviously not going to tell us the truth.”

“Tell me what?”

Tokoyami stood up, his phone in his hand. “I was also at that art exhibit and I took notice of a certain 1-A student hanging out with a student from 1-B. Judging from the display of affection, I take that your relationship with him is not of the platonic nature?” Tokoyami finished his question by showing Midoriya a photo of him and Kamakiri holding hands and looking at a painting together. There was no way he could lie his way out of this. They had physical evidence of their relationship. With no other option, Midoriya did the only thing left to do.

Taking a deep breath, Midoriya said, “Listen, guys, there’s an easy explanation for all of this. You see-“ Before he could finish, he activated his quirk and burst through the door. Midoriya ran as far away from his class as possible. He started heading toward the place he and Kamakiri designated as the spot they would go to if one or both of their classmates found out about their relationship. Upon his surprise, Midoriya found Kamakiri already there without having to tell him to meet him. “Toga, what are you doing here?”

“The same reason you’re here. My class found out about us. Apparently, someone from my class was also at that art museum and took a picture of us together. They confronted me about it and after having Monoma repeatedly tell me that it was unforgivable for dating the enemy, I got out of there as fast as I could. What about you?”

“Same thing here. I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. What do we do now?”

“There’s always the plan of running away and changing our identities.”

“No, I know what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna do what we should have done at the beginning.”

After Midoriya ran out on them, class 1-A went looking for him. On the way, they encountered class 1-B looking for their classmate. Figuring they were probably together, they decided to help each other look for their friends. After about thirty minutes of searching, they were starting to lose hope until they saw the two greenettes come walking out of the woods. They immediately ran to them asking questions. It took Kamakiri yelling at them to get them to be quiet.

“I guess we have some explaining to do, huh?” Midoriya started.

“Yeah, you do. How about you start where the two of you met?” Kaminari asked.

Kamakiri decided to begin the discussion. “Well, we first noticed each other when we were fighting during that training session. I noticed how good of a fighter Izu was and it intrigued me how he could be so quick on his feet.”

Midoriya stepped in to add his side of the story. “I noticed how impressive Toga was in keeping up with me. After he defeated me, I thought about meeting up with him so we could discuss how to improve his quirk. Not too long afterward, I found myself developing feelings for him.”

“Pretty soon, I was feeling the same way too. I couldn’t help it. Midoriya has such a wonderful smile and I would be a fool to not be attracted to such a beautiful person.”

“Oh, Toga, stop. You’re embarrassing me in front of everyone.” Midoriya was blushing hard and it only got worse when Kamakiri leaned down and whispered something into his boyfriend’s ear.

“A-Anyways, I decided to tell Kamakiri how I felt and I was surprised to hear he felt the same way. After that, we started dating.”

“You mean, you’ve been dating this entire time and didn’t tell us?” Kaibara from 1-B asked.

“We tried, but every time we came close, you got into a fight with 1-A. And every time you fought each other with your petty rivalry, it made it harder to tell you guys.” Kamakiri explained.

“We didn’t know that. We’re sorry we caused you guys so much trouble.”

“It’s fine, Kirishima. We knew you wouldn’t like the idea of someone from 1-A dating someone from 1-B so we did what we thought was best.”

“Deku,” Uraraka yelled, “please forgive us for making you think you had to hide this from your friends. We didn’t mean for our rivalry to get in the way of your love life.” Uraraka was bowing in apology along with half the class who also apologized for their behavior. Seconds after, 1-B apologized to both Midoriya and Kamakiri for overreacting. The two lovers forgave their friends, but they were adamant in apologizing.

After finally getting them to stop, the two classes went back to the dorms so they could get some sleep. 1-A watched as Midoriya went upstairs to his room. As soon as he was out of sight, the rest of the class converged in the common area. “Dude, I feel bad for making Midoriya having to hide his relationship with that guy,” Kirishima stated.

“I do too. It’s not fair for him to finally find someone and have to keep it a secret.”

“We need to make it up to him somehow.”

“I don’t understand why we have to do shit for that little nerd. I don’t care about that extra he’s dating.”

“If I didn’t know better, I would say you’re jealous.”

“YOU WANNA GO, RACCOON EYES?”

“Bakugou, keep it down. You’re gonna wake up Midoriya.”

“Well, what do you suggest we do to fix things?”

“I say we throw together a date for Midoriya and Kamakiri. It’s the least we can do to make up for what we’ve done.”

“I got an even better idea. How about we ask 1-B to help us throw together a date? That way, we can show Midoriya we can work together with the other class and they’ll have a chance to redeem themselves.”

“You think they’ll go for it?”

“They might. We can ask them tomorrow.” With that, the students of 1-A went to bed.

That next morning, class 1-A got straight to work on planning the perfect date. The first thing they did was enlist the help of 1-B, who was more than willing to help. Without letting the greenettes know, they planned out each individual detail. From where to have it to what they would be eating, the two classes found themselves enjoying working with each other. After about a week of preparation, they were ready to show off what they had done. It began with leaving a note for Midoriya that was supposedly written by Kamakiri telling him to follow the directions on the paper.

Midoriya followed the directions left behind and found himself in a field surrounded by cherry blossom trees. In the middle of the field laid a blanket with a picnic basket and candles. On the other side of the blanket stood Kamakiri looking confused until he saw Midoriya and waved him over. Midoriya made his way over to his boyfriend and gave him a hello kiss on the cheek. “Do you know what’s going on?” Midoriya asked first.

“Beats me. I got a letter addressed to me from you saying I should follow these directions. I got here and I didn’t see you so I was starting to think this was a joke. But I see you also got a letter.”

“I did. I thought you wrote it but now I’m starting to think something bigger is afoot.”

“Well, while we’re trying to figure it out, how about we enjoy this picnic someone left for us?” Kamakiri sat down and began emptying the picnic basket, Midoriya sitting down as well. Together, they pulled out a bottle of sparkling grape juice, an assortment of cheese, sandwiches, two wine glasses, a lighter, grapes, and a note. The note was from class 1-A and B saying they were the ones behind the date and hoped the two of them could forgive them for messing up their dates.

“It was nice of our friends to put this together. I’m glad they were able to get along enough to do something productive.”

“Maybe we can get them to do this again sometime. I like receiving free food.”

“I wouldn’t count on it. Knowing them, they’d probably be at each other’s throats by tomorrow.” They both let out a laugh and continued to enjoy themselves. They sampled each different cheese (which turned out to be a gift from Aoyama) and washed it down with the grape juice. They ate the sandwiches and fed each other grapes. Afterward, they watched the sunset from their blanket and once it dipped below the horizon, gazed at the different constellations. While the wind was blowing through their hair and the moon was casting its glow, they made a promise to each other that for better or worse, they would stay together.
