Work Text:
“i still don’t get why you hooked me up to this thing.”
“you were one of the few people at the scene, it’s a given.”
shin tapped his foot in anticipation. his fingers were connected by black strips of velcro and wires to a fancy techbox-machine-thing on a table in front of him, and next to it was the detective interrogating him.
keiji shinogi, who called him in for questioning. he did so because shin was at the crime scene when said crime happened, and that was understandable. however, he had to question keiji’s legitimacy.
for most of the time he was in the policeman’s presence, the man was grinning and cracking stale jokes, never really taking the situation at hand seriously. it confused the living hell out of shin, on top of feeling nervous about being connected to an unknown—not to mention, intimidating—device.
“what even is this thing? you connected me to a printer?”
a dry chuckle escaped keiji’s lips.
“it’s a lie detector.”
“well, i don’t have anything to lie about, so you should really let me go home now.”
setting up the last bit of the machine needed, the man pulled out the chair parallel to shin and sat down. he began inspecting whatever it was on that tiny screen.
“no dice, tsukimi,” keiji said with a smile. “i’m gonna ask you some questions now.”
at that moment, shin broke out into...a tiny bit of a sweat. just a tiny one.
his palms were so sweaty, he probably could’ve slipped out of the strapping if he wanted to. but, he knew there were no doubt going to be consequences to disobeying an officer. especially when he’s all alone in the room with one.
it wasn’t like he committed the crime, but he didn’t exactly not have things he’d rather keep to himself, either. especially in front of keiji.
in an anxious panic, he tried to defend himself.
“look...i don’t have anything to hide!”
a few seconds of silence followed.
and then, a noise shin never expected to hear filled the room, startling him.
a short, loud beep coming from the lie detector.
keiji’s expression turned to a curious one.
“are you lying?”
“no, of course not!”
another beep.
“...sorry to break it to you, but apparently, you are.”
shin was bewildered. that sound meant the machine detected a lie? he wasn’t sure if he dug himself a hole and became a new suspect, or if he was going to be confessing to... other, unrelated things soon.
“i swear, i wasn’t involved at all!”
the room fell silent again. though...it was different than the first time.
maybe it was just him, but the silence continued for a little too long. the two men waited, and yet no obnoxious noise followed.
“huh,” keiji shrugged. “guess you weren’t, then.”
shin breathed a sigh of relief. at least he wasn’t going to be seen as guilty.
“of course i wasn’t.” he crossed his arms and turned his head to the side.
“wahah, i see someone’s confident in his innocence.”
“why wouldn’t i be?” shin scoffed at how smug the blonde-haired man was being. “see, officer shinogi...you think you’re hot, but you’re really not.”
beep.
“oh?”
the lie detector beeped almost immediately. it surprised the both of them.
“could you repeat what you said?”
”i...i said you’re not as hot as you think you are.”
beep.
“...uh, is it..broken? or something?”
“sure isn’t.” keiji replied. he was visibly amused. “the lie detector's working just fine, and it’s telling me you think i’m “hot”.”
shin cursed under his breath. this was not the time to have a homosexual panic attack. he was in an interrogation room, for god’s sake. and he was in the midst of being seriously questioned by an actual cop.
“huh—? i don’t think that!” he frantically explained himself...or at least, tried to. “i don’t, in any way, find you physically or emotionally attractive.”
shin prayed. he prayed to every god out there that the machine wouldn’t beep. his face was a vibrant, embarrassed shade of red and he could barely look at the man before him. he needed it to stay silent.
but much to his dismay, the dreaded sound rang again.
beep. beep. beep.
“...goddamnit—”
keiji could only laugh, while shin hid his face with his scarf.
the blonde man then began pushing some buttons, and after a while, he started disconnecting shin from the lie detector.
“i’m gonna go ahead and let you go now.”
their hands kept brushing past each other, especially while keiji was removing shin’s finger straps. he was right to consider how legitimate the detective was; letting shin go so soon was a big red flag. definitely shady.
and yet, because he was going sooner than expected, he felt like he’d be missing an opportunity right then and there if he didn’t do what he thought about doing. hell, he was already outed as thinking less than straight things. he might as well have gone for it.
“officer shinogi?”
“hm?”
“i...oh, fuck it— keiji, you have any plans on the weekend?”
