Work Text:
Megumi can’t see.
There’s blood in his eyes, dripping down from his forehead, clouding his vision. He knows he got hit, hard, and he knows that it hurts.
There’s something tugging at his collar, once, twice, before he finally moves, his body being dragged against the ground towards wherever he is being taken.
His instincts know that it is a shikigami, the demon dog, he thinks, so he trusts it, lets himself be carried.
His head is throbbing, his limbs hurting with an ache he knows will last for weeks, and he feels the methodical drag of the ground against his back, his legs, his feet catching in the dirt….
The dog stops, and he can feel something looming over him.
No—someone.
“That’s a good boy,” a familiar voice calls to the dog, hoarse and broken but still sweet, the tone Yuuji reserves for things he likes. “Bringing my Megumi back to me.”
He feels Yuuji shift, leaning down to touch him, his forehead, wiping the blood away. “Yuuji,” Megumi calls, and he hardly recognizes his own voice.
“I’m right here,” Yuuji comforts, arms coming around his frame to hold him close. Megumi goes easily, falls into Yuuji’s strong chest. He smells like familiar sweat and the metallic tang of blood, and he can’t tell whose it is.
“Yuuji,” he calls again, reaching up to reciprocate the touch, blindly reaching for Yuuji’s face, his chest, his throat, anything. His hand catches on his shoulder, and he uses whatever strength he has left to pull him closer. “ Yuuji .” His voice breaks.
“Shhh,” he shushes, hand brushing his hair away from his damp forehead, running a soothing line across his temple. “I’m okay,” he says, as if he read Megumi’s mind. “I’m right here.”
There’s a whimper coming from beside him, and Megumi turns his head. His dog nudges his hand with its nose, and whimpers again. He can almost hear the question, the concern.
He pets it gently, blindly running his hand along its snout and scratches behind its ear. “I’m okay,” he tells the dog lightly. “You did a good job. Go rest.” He feels the dog vanish from under his touch.
He feels Yuuji’s lips against his hair, and he sighs. He’s starting to get woozy from the blood loss, and he knows the signs that he’s going to pass out.
“Yuuji,” he says again, because it feels like it’s all he can say. “Remind me, after—” He pauses with a deep breath. Yuuji kisses him again. “—to give the dog a treat.”
Megumi can hear Yuuji’s laugh, light and heavy at the same time, and he can imagine the nod. “Okay,” he says, voice soft but scratchy. “He deserves it.”
Megumi feels himself being lifted, the only thing holding him from falling are Yuuji’s strong arms, and he tucks his face into Yuuji’s neck.
He breathes and listens to Yuuji breathe. They’re alive.
The last thing he hears when he loses consciousness is Yuuji softly humming.
When he wakes, Megumi is in the infirmary. He recognizes it by the smell of sick and medicine.
He feels better already, only left with a dull ache in his head, so he assumes Ieiri-san already saw him.
The next thing he feels is a warmth next to him. He opens his eyes, and boy , does it hurt against the light, but there next to him is Itadori, head on the same pillow as his, arm carefully slung over Megumi’s torso. He can tell that Yuuji’s not asleep, just shutting his eyes, so he lifts his arm (which also hurts like a bitch ) and links his fingers with Yuuji’s.
His eyes open. “Megumi.”
Megumi smiles. “Hi.”
Yuuji leans forward and kisses the corner of his mouth. “I was worried about you, you lost a lot of blood.”
Megumi hums. “I’m okay.”
Yuuji shifts, and Megumi winces as his body is jostled. Yuuji freezes. “Are you okay? I’m sorry, do you need something? Painkillers? Are you thirst—”
Megumi chuckles, reaching for Yuuji. “Hush,” he whispers, pulling him in by his shirt with a weak arm. “Stop fussing and kiss me.”
He does, bending forward with gentle hands, one by Megumi’s head on the pillow and the other, warm to the touch, starts skimming under his shirt. His skin is tender there, and Yuuji must know because his touch is impossibly soft. He breaks their kiss to mouth at Megumi’s cheek, and Megumi can’t help the smile that splits his lips as Yuuji kisses the tip on his nose.
Yuuji smiles back, a little sleepy, and his belly flutters at the idea of Yuuji staying up all night to make sure he’s okay. He can’t help the way he leans back in, fitting their lips together, and Yuuji shifts forward, this time careful of his weight.
“Yuuji,” he whispers against his lips. Yuuji kisses him harder in response.
Then there’s a whine at his feet. Surprised, he looks down, and there’s the dog, curled into a ball and looking up at the two of them.
“Oh, he came out a little while ago,” Yuuji explains, reaching a hand towards it and it crawls up the bed, also careful of Megumi’s sore body, to get pet.
“You wouldn’t happen to have any treats, would you?” Megumi asks, petting the dog himself. “I believe I promised him one.”
Yuuji smiles, kissing his cheek, before turning over and fiddling with his backpack. A bag of beef jerky lands on the bed. Megumi feeds the dog, with a whispered, good boy and more pets, and Yuuji settles back into bed. The dog fits between them, and Yuuji’s arm fits around it and Megumi.
Yuuji kisses his temple, and it doesn’t take long until Megumi hears him start to snore. He deserves it , Megumi thinks, mind echoing Yuuji’s own words before.
He looks down at his dog, who has also closed its eyes, and gently pats its head one more time, before turning on his side to watch Yuuji sleep.
