Chapter Text
The first thing that Morgan finds disrespectful of him is that he doesn't shake his hand. Spencer pulls it back and gives him a tiny wave with his hand instead. "Derek Morgan."
"Special Agent Dr. Spencer Reid." The kid infront of him says proudly clunching his messenger bag.
"You want me to call you that the whole time?"
"No my name is just Spencer." Morgan gives Gideon a look asking if he is serious but the man just ignores him and JJ encourages Spencer to sit down at his new desk.
The second thing he notices is Spencer's inability to speak freely.
"Reid we have a meeting in a few do you have the files ready?"
"Reid we have a meeting in a few do you have the files ready? Reid has the files ready."
"Are you mocking me or something?" Morgan gets up from his seat approaching him.
"Are you mocking me or something? No."
"Then stop repeating what I said."
Morgan quickly learns he does that not with him but also with other people. "Doesn't this annoy you?" He asks JJ.
"What?"
"His talking."
"No. It's fine."
Morgan tries being patient with him but the stuttering the not speaking clearly the not getting any orders unless you tell him directly what to do - it drives him nuts.
He is alone with him when Spencer starts covering his ears, rocking in his seat at the precinct. "Reid stop it."
"Can't."
"Sit still." Spencer doesn't stop, he moves in his seat, his fingernails digging into his scalp. Morgan can see some officers looking through the glass wall into the conference room. "Oh god you are such an embarrassment." He walks around the table grabbing Spencer's wrists and forcing him to sit still. "I said stop it."
"Let me." The younger man whines and when Morgan does he slumps into his seat before getting up and hurring out of the room.
No matter what Morgan does he can't keep the kid from adoring him. Always wanting to pair up with him, talking to him, if you can consider that talking.
"Reid stop." Hotch stops the rambling man. "You can tell me later just let Morgan work."
"He needs to hear this it's important." Spencer whispers but he is standing on the other side of the table so it isn't really whispering.
"I think Morgan knows enough about the concentration of each protein in his food, he will ask you if he wants to know more." Or read about it himself if he really wants to.
"Just wanted to help him." Disappointed Spencer looks up to Morgan and Hotch steps in.
"Well I started a different training again you can tell me while we drive over to the crime scene."
"Sweet." Quickly he hurries behind Hotch out of the room.
"You could be a little bit nicer to him you know." Gideon comments. "He tries his best."
"I am here to catch an unsub not to listen to a scrawny kid talking about things that are completely irrelevant for this case."
"He never said a bad word about you."
"I wouldn't care if he did." It goes on like this till they have to double up one night.
"Hotch please you get along with him just let us change rooms."
"Morgan I don't appreciate your behaviour concerning a such simple matter of sharing a room with someone. Grow up." Defeated Morgan walks towards the elevator, Spencer slipping in right behind him. Playing with the strap of his bag he can hardly carry.
"Did you know that there are approximately 27 elevator related deaths per year?"
"I didn't want to."
"It's still statistically the safest way to travel." He goes on and Morgan just ignores him walking out of the elevator towards their room. "There are approximately 86789 hotel and motels in the US."
"Kid I don't want to hear another statistic. I want my quiet and I want to sleep."
"I want my quiet and I want to sleep."
"Glad we are on the same page here." Spencer sits down carefully at the edge of his bed, tossing his shoes aside and then grabs his book and starts reading and that is all he does for the next hour , his feet dangling in the air, hitting his bed regularly. "What about going to sleep?" No reaction and Morgan turns around draping his blanket over his head trying to shield the light but it doesn't really work so he asks again. "Reid, how about some sleep? The light is really annoying." No response so Morgan sits up again. "Reid!" He speaks louder and the boy flinches turning his head towards him with a curious expression.
"The light is annoying could you maybe go to sleep now?" He shakes his head and turns back to reading but after another half an hour Morgan gets up,walking around their beds grabbing the book from his hand but Spencer holds on to it for his dear life. "Go to sleep. I am tired and don't have time for this. If you want to read so badly go the lobby."
"My book." He kicks Morgan against the knee, he just wants him to stop touching his book. "Lobby. My book."
"You are a insane."
"My book." Defeated Morgan let's go and Spencer hugs it tight in his arms, shyly leaning down to grab his shoes and then he is out of the door.
When Morgan wakes up the next time it is shortly after three and Spencer wasn't back yet so he throws over a hoodie and slips into his shoes making his way downstairs into the lobby. And he finds him there, curled up on a sofa, the book on his knees, another one on the table next to him. Right next to a coffee. "Hey" Immediately Spencer grabs his book and leans over to the table as an attempt to protect the other one. "Not here to take your book."
"My books."
"That's right." He let's himself fall into the cushion, propping his head up with his elbow on the rest facing Spencer. "It's a little bit late to read don't you think?"
"No."
"We have to work in the morning." The sentence leads Spencer to grab the book on the table fully and also protecting it with his arms. "I am not taking them away."
"My books."
"I am just trying to get you to sleep. Not to take your books away." Spencer just presses himself further against the rest behind him. "You can read up in our room. I am sorry."
"My books?"
"Your books I promise." Hesitant he gets up and follows Morgan up to the hotel room. "Come on go to bed we will leave this light on and you can read till you fall asleep."
"Will you take my books if I fall asleep?"
"No."
"Will you turn the light of?"
"Probably." Morgan watches Spencer hesitate for a long moment but then goes over to his bag, grabbing his pyjama and going into the bathroom.
"Light on?"
"Okay, light stays on." Morgan gives in defeated and watches Spencer crawl under the blanket and falls asleep within minutes and Morgan sure as hell wasn't going to sleep with the light on so he turns it off and falls back asleep himself until he wakes up by Spencer's heavy breathing from the other bed. Grasping for air. "Reid?" No answer so he turns on the light and rushes over, Spencer is laying on his back frozen in place. "Reid look at me." He just stays absolutely still just closing his mouth for a second, swallowing and then opening it up again to get more air. "Reid listen to my voice you are okay." He tries it one more time before getting Hotch involved because he was sure as hell not the right person for this. How is he supposed to know what a man wanting to be in the FBI and still acting like this needs.
"Spencer hey, hey,it's okay. Listen to me,it's Hotch. You are safe. It's just me." He watches his normally so emotionless boss cub the man's cheek. "You are doing great buddy, listen to me." Gideon enters the room shortly after searching in his bag for Spencer's medication and when he does it doesn't take long for Spencer to get sleepy again. "This is good. This is nice isn't it?" Hotch asks in a soft tone as Spencer turns his head away from him, cuddling in his hand and then huffs ones his eyes half closed. "Close your eyes, it's alright, feel the your stuff animal in your hand." Hotch had pulled it out of his bag earlier. "You can sleep. You did so good." Spencer slurs something no one understands but he also doesn't try again and not long afterwards falls asleep. Hotch takes the books from the bed and puts them on the nightstand and takes an half empty water bottle from Spencer's bag and puts it next to it. "Morgan follow me." They close the door to Hotch's room behind them and Hotch starts with his long overdue lecture. "Are you out of your mind?"
"Excuse me? Am I out of my mind? Have you looked at him?"
"Why was the room dark? I bet he didn't do that himself."
"He is a twenty four year old men he can sleep without a light."
"That has nothing to do with age and you know it. Ever since he joined the team you made his life a living hell and if you want to keep being a part of this team you are going to change that."
"He is not the right fit for this team."
"He is. You aren't." Hotch pauses for a moment. "One more time that I find out something like this happens and you are off the team."
"You can't kick me out for something like this-"
"I can and I will."
