Work Text:

The scent of fresh grass and qingxin flowers wafted through the air, the wind ruffling the leaf on Venti’s hat. Jueyun Karst isn’t frequented by mortals, therefore, its natural beauty and peacefulness have been a constant for centuries since the adepti settled in the area.

Sitting atop one of the stone formations in Liyue’s stone forest, Venti glanced at the person beside him. Xiao was staring at the small bunch of qingxin flowers he picked before their meeting. Venti couldn’t help but smile at the sight of Xiao’s soft expression as he gently caresses the white petals of the flowers.

Meanwhile, Xiao is using all of his willpower not to glance at Venti. He knows that he’s staring, and the attention is enough to make his face warm up. However, he doesn’t want Venti to stop smiling and staring so he continues on pretending to not notice.

The qingxin flower may not be sweet, but this simple display of shy affection certainly is.

“I’m gonna throw an entire boulder at them,” a voice from behind said.

Not far from the pair were five ghosts. They floated at a distance, witnessing the scene play in front of them.

“You can’t throw a boulder at them, Bonanus” one of the ghosts who emitted a violet glow, glared at the brown ghost. “You’re not alive.”

“Don’t remind me of my lack of powers, Bosacius,” Bonanus folded his arms to his chest. “But aren’t you all annoyed at the constant yearning we witness on almost a daily basis?”

“You do realize that you could leave if it bothers you too much,” the blue ghost, Menogias, said. “We just agreed to just check on Alatus from time to time but I’m honestly a bit invested in this.”

The red ghost, Indarias, rolled her eyes. “This isn’t one of your romance novels.”

“But, seriously,” Bonanus said. “Shouldn’t we do something?” he looked around. “You, boy, what do you think.”

Another ghost, one that bears a striking resemblance to the Anemo Archon, looked at the other ghosts. “Well, like what Mr. Bosacius said, we can’t exactly do anything since we’re all ghosts.”

Bonanus sighed. He looked at the pair in front of them. Venti was now admiring the sunset while Xiao wasn't even looking at the sun as he was gazing longingly at the archon instead.

“I tried playing them a song once,” the bard said, shrugging. “But I don’t think they heard me.”

The other ghosts muttered amongst themselves. Who knew that the afterlife would be like this?

---

What happens after one's death is a complete mystery. Sometimes, even the deceased are still confused. However, one thing is certain. Their memories will always be cherished in the minds and hearts of the ones they left behind.

This is why Xiao picked up the flute. After being saved by the melodious sound of the flute played by Venti, he finds solace and calm whenever he plays the instrument himself. He also uses the flute as a way to honor his old friends.

All his efforts were not in vain. As he sat on the balcony of Wangshu Inn playing the flute, beside him sat Menogias and Indarias, listening to him play as they braided each other's hair.

"Alatus is so talented," Menogias cooed. "He could be a famous musician if he wanted to."

"That's an interesting change of career paths," Indarias said.

"I have an idea!" Menogias said excitedly. "He could play the flute to woo his beloved. The little wind archon adores music, right?"

Indarias sighed. "Times like this, communication with the living would be useful," she leaned forward and waved her hands in front of Xiao. "Hello? Alatus? Hello?"

"What are you doing? You know that's not going to work."

"Maybe if he meditated hard enough, or something," Indarias leaned back into a sitting position. "Oh, well. I tried."

Menogias shook her head. "That certainly was an attempt."

A strong gust of wind ruffled Xiao's hair, causing him to pause his playing. He let out a soft chuckle and a pinkish glow bloomed on his cheeks.

"On Rex Lapis, that is the most adorable thing I've ever seen," Menogias cooed. Indarias rolled her eyes but she had to admit that it's obvious to anyone, even ghosts, that Alatus is definitely whipped for the anemo archon.

Meanwhile, in the neighboring country of Mondstadt, said anemo archon is currently on his way from being tipsy to dangerously drunk.

This was not an uncommon occurrence. What makes today different is that he's actually drunk for a reason now.

Kaeya looked warily at his drinking partner, not used to him being all sentimental and emotional.

"It's just that," Venti said in between sobs. "He's so beautiful and charming and gentle and perfect and-"

"I can't believe this," Diluc said, staring horrifically at the mess that was Venti as he cried on the bar countertop. "Is this real? Am I hallucinating?"

"Same," Kaeya said, patting Venti's back in sympathy. "I didn't know that Venti gets boy problems like the rest of us."

Diluc transferred his horrified look to Kaeya. "What do you mean by ‘the rest of us’?"

Kaeya waved his free hand dismissively. "Except you, though. I can't believe Venti has more romantic experience than you."

"I'm like two thousand years old. Of course, I have experience," Venti muttered.

"Okay, he has officially lost it," Kaeya said. He tapped his mug. "Diluc, can you refill mine? I probably need something strong to deal with this."

On the seat beside Venti, his friend sat, sadly looking at him.

"Oh, cry, Venti," he reached out to brush Venti's messy hair out of his face but his hand just went through the other's face. The bard looked on, sadly. This isn’t the first time he so desperately wanted to comfort his friend but couldn’t. “I’m sure he likes you back.”

The bard sighed as Venti downed another drink. If only he could find a way to help his dearest friend who seemed to be able to help everyone else except himself.

---

“I don’t understand why I have to go with you,” Xiao grumbled at Venti, who was skipping happily as they made their way through the streets of Liyue Harbor. “I see Zhongli almost every week.”

“That’s you,” Venti looked back at Xiao with a grin. “I barely have time to meet him so now I’m taking full advantage of my free time. Also,” he grabbed Xiao’s arm. “I wanna spend time with you, too. Is that so bad?”

Venti laughed as Xiao stumbled from the sudden contact.

"I genuinely don't understand this," Bosacius said. The five ghosts were trailing behind them. "Venti is actually capable to initiate something with Xiao but why is their relationship going nowhere?"

"I won't say they're going nowhere," Indarias said. "I mean, bringing Xiao to the outskirts of Liyue Harbor is already an achievement. The fact that he managed to bring him into the city itself..."

"Venti's just like that," the bard shook his head fondly. "He won't force anyone to do what he says but he can be quite convincing if he wants to. Like a hurricane disguised as a small gust of wind."

The pair made a right turn and arrived in front of Wangshu Funeral Parlor. Zhongli was there talking to a girl.

" Zhongli!!!! " Venti let go of Xiao's arm and ran straight to Zhongli, throwing himself to hug him.

"Venti! " Zhongli's voice was stern but no one could deny the laughter in his eyes. "Wait a moment, I'm talking to my boss."

"Whoops," Venti let go of Zhongli as Xiao jogged to catch up with him.

"I'm sorry about him," Xiao said, bowing to the girl. "He's not from around here."

"Oh, it's fine! Don't worry," the girl said. "It's nice to finally meet Zhongli's friends. I'm Hu Tao, by the way."

"Director, these are Xiao and Venti," Zhongli introduced them. "Venti's from Mondstadt."

"Nice to meet you, Zhongli's boss!" Venti waved. "Hope he's not causing you any trouble."

"Oh, no trouble at all! Business has been booming since he joined us!"

"Business has been what?" Xiao said a bit horrified at her statement.

Zhongli cleared his throat. "Uhm, yes. Anyways, I will be taking my leave now, director."

"Sure, go have fun! I just realized that I might be working overtime to attend to some clients," she said, throwing a pointed look behind Xiao's shoulder.

Xiao bristled. "What do you mean?"

"It's nothing I haven't dealt with before. Don't you worry." she sends the same look behind Venti. Xiao instinctively moves closer to him

"Anyways," she pushes Zhongli towards his friends. "Go have fun now, Zhongli. I got everything all under control."

"If you say so," Zhongli said, already used to Hu Tao's antics. "Xiao. Venti. I've been wanting to show you a new drink in this pub I frequent to-"

Zhongli's voice disappeared as the trio walked further away from Hu Tao. She stared at the five ghosts who stayed behind out of sheer bewilderment. "Alright. What's all this then?"

"You can see us?" the bard said.

"Yep," Hu Tao said. "Well, I can't talk to you guys out in the open. Please follow me into my office."

"Young lady, watch yourself," Bonanus stood his ground. "You are talking to the mighty yaksha and a rebellion leader from Mondstadt. How are we sure that you're not going to do anything to us?"

Hu Tao smiled, not fazed at all. "I'm still mortal. I can't hurt you if that's what you're worried about. I'm just concerned about the possible imbalance we are causing right now. So please, just follow me," she walked towards the entrance of the funeral parlor.

The ghosts followed Hu Tao into the building and her office. She settled into a chair behind a desk and folded her hands on the desk. "As you already know, I'm the director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor and I'm the one in charge of keeping the land of both the living and the dead in check. May I ask why you five are trailing behind an adeptus and a god?"

The bard stepped forward. “I am Venti’s friend and these are Xiao’s fellow yakshas. We mean no harm. We just want to check on our friends from time to time."

"We're not always with them, we promise," Menogias said and the others nodded in agreement. "It's just that, lately, we've been concerned for them. You see, the two of them seem to be spending more time with each other but are completely oblivious to the fact that they like each other. Romantically."

Hu Tao narrowed her eyes. "Is that all there is to this? No greater threat or anything?"

"None that we know of," Bonanus said.

The director looked at all of them with an unreadable expression. Then she suddenly burst out laughing.

"Oh my archons, you all got me there," she said between chortles. "I was so worried that some crazy supernatural event was about to rampage Liyue or something."

"Why would that be the case?" the bard tilted his head.

"Well, ghosts don't usually follow immortals around," she said. "If that were the case, then Teyvat would be sprawling with ghosts in every corner."

She stood from her seat and paced across the room. "Your intentions aren't bad so I guess that's alright. However, you still can't keep on hanging around Xiao and Venti all the time."

"But we want to help them," Menogias said. "The two of them are so lonely. Maybe having each other will ease their burdens."

"Matchmaking ghosts? That's something you don’t see every day," Hu Tao grinned. "Okay, I propose a contract," she waved at the bard. "Here in Liyue, we take contracts very seriously. I'm sure these yakshas are very familiar with the concept. So, here's my proposal. I'll help you get Xiao and Venti together. When they finally do, you guys can let go of them. Deal?"

Indarias crossed her arms. "And what do we get from this contract?"

"Peace of mind, " she simply said.

"I agree," Inarias said. “I’ve heard of this particular funeral parlor. They always get the job done right.”

“Good to know that our business has good reviews among the dead,” Hu Tao said. “What about the rest of you? Do you agree?”

All the other ghosts voiced their agreement. Hu Tao clapped her hands. “Alright! Now that we’re all in agreement, let’s plan what I call ‘Operation Matchmaking: Ghosts Edition’!”

---

Venti was skipping through Stone Gate, a lyre on his hand to entertain himself as he walked from Mondstadt to Liyue. His journey was a bit faster than what most people have to go through as he used a bit of anemo powers to glide when no one was looking.

He spotted an apple tree on the side of the road. He picked a few apples until he felt a familiar presence from behind him.

“Hello, Zhongli,” Venti threw an apple that Zhongli caught. “What’s up?”

“You’re going to meet Xiao, right?” Zhongli asked.

“Yeah. Why? Do you need anything from him?”

“No, but here,” Zhongli gave Venti a heavy pouch. Venti’s eyes widened in surprise as he opened the pouch. “Go take Xiao somewhere nice today.”

“What? What’s going on?” Venti said, panic evident in his voice. “Why did you suddenly give me mora?”

“There’s nothing to worry about. Like I said. Just take him somewhere nice today,” Zhongli said. “The both of you. Consider that your pocket money.”

“Wow,” Venti said. “You really are his father.”

“Uhm, I don’t think that’s what’s going on here,” Zhongli coughed, looking away. “Anyways, there are a lot of good restaurants in the harbor. He’d like that.”

“Okay…” Venti stood there still bewildered at his friend. “Hold on. Do you know?”

“Know what?”

“That I,” Venti fiddled with his fingers, uncharacteristically shy all of a sudden. “That I like him?” he said in a voice barely above a whisper.

Zhongli smiled at his oldest friend. “It’s a bit obvious, you know?”

“Not really, since he’s not catching any of my hints,” Venti pouted. “But, I’ll definitely take advantage of this!” he shook the bag of mora. “It’s not every day I get free mora!”

Venti made his way to Wangshu Inn while Zhongli returned to Liyue Harbor. He met up with Hu Tao, who was sitting in the booth of one of Liyue’s many tea houses.

“I gave Venti the mora,” Zhongli said as he sipped on his tea. Hu Tao told him about her matchmaking plans, mentioning a ghost of Venti’s friend and how he wants to see Venti off to a potential suitor such as Xiao. Zhongli has a feeling that the director is omitting some of the information, but he looked the other way, as he himself is interested in seeing Xiao and Venti together.

“Nice,” Hu Tao said. “Hopefully they take your advice and go on a romantic date in the city.”

“‘Hopefully’ is the keyword there,” Zhongli sighed. “I care for Venti, truly, but his alcoholic tendencies get in the way of his clear thoughts. I propose we watch over them from time to time.”

Hu Tao waved her hand dismissively. "They'll be fine, Zhongli. They're adults. Let them have fun."

Somewhere in the tea house, the five ghosts stare at the other customers. Bonanus looked longingly at the display of sweets on the counter.

“Are all Mondstadtians really alcoholic?” Indarias asked the bard. “I mean no offense, but I’m just curious.”

“Unfortunately,” the bard sighed. “Well, only after my time. Once Venti came into rule as archon and nurtured the winds around Mondstadt, that’s when the people learned to brew. It’s good for business, but I guess being alcoholic is a price to pay for fertile lands.”

The ghosts were in the tea house with Hu Tao because the director strictly forbade them from getting near Xiao and Venti during their date.

“Look!” Menogias said from her perch on the balcony. “I think I see them!”

They all hurried towards the balcony to peek outside. The sun was setting in Liyue, bathing the city in a beautiful orange glow. They spotted Venti, who was holding Xiao’s hand and pulling him across the street. Both of them had blinding smiles on their faces.

“Would you believe that,” Bosacius said. “Looks like our plan might actually work!”

They all cheered in delight. The bard looked back at Hu Tao who was staring at them curiously. He gave her a ‘thumbs up’ sign to which she smiled at, behind her teacup.

A few hours later, Zhongli and Hu Tao were on their way back to the funeral parlor to attend to some last-minute business before closing. However, they were stopped by someone calling Zhongli’s name.

“Mr. Zhongli!” they looked to see Ganyu running towards them. “Something happened!”

“What’s the matter, Ganyu?” he said as she tried to catch her breath.

“The millelith brought two unconscious people,” she said with urgency. “I checked and one of them is Xiao!”

“What?” Zhongli and Hu Tao said. “Ganyu, where are they?”

“They’re at my apartment. It's safer there for him and I already prepared first aid.”

“Go, Zhongli,” Hu Tao said. “I’ll take care of our other errands.”

“Thank you, director,” Zhongli bowed and went on his way with Ganyu.

When they reached Ganyu’s apartment, they saw both Xiao and Venti slumped on the couch, completely unconscious. Zhongli rushed to them.

“Who’s the other one?” Ganyu asked. “He doesn’t look like he’s from around here.”

“He’s from Mondstadt,” Zhongli said. He placed his hands on both of their foreheads to check their temperature. “What happened to them?” he leaned closer to check on their breathing but his sense of smell caught something amiss.

“Ganyu, do you have any alcoholic beverages open right now?”

“None. I just have tea boiling in the kitchen.”

Zhongli sniffed the air again. He stood up to face Ganyu, who was nervously wringing her hands in front of her. “They’re fine. It seems that they’re just blackout drunk.”

“What?” Ganyu exclaimed. “Xiao drinks? Since when?”

“Since this bard came around,” Zhongli rubbed his hands on his temple. “I shouldn’t have given Venti mora.”

“Um, may I ask what exactly is going on?”

“The one in green. That’s Venti. He’s the anemo archon. I gave him some mora to spend with Xiao but I should’ve known that the drunkard would use it all on alcohol.”

“Why did you give them money?”

“I was sponsoring their date.”

“Their what?”

“An attempt on a date. My boss from the funeral parlor was adamant that we had to set those two up lest we cause an imbalance between the land of the living and the dead.”

“I’m not quite sure I follow,” Ganyu furrowed her brows.

“Me neither, actually,” Zhongli said. “I apologize for the inconvenience these two gave you.”

“No, it’s alright,” Ganyu reassured. “They can stay here for the night, I supposed. Except I have to go to work early tomorrow morning.” she walked towards the kitchen. “You’re welcome to stay too if you want to look after them. I made more than enough tea-”

As the two made their way to the kitchen, they were unaware that the ghosts followed them into the apartment.

“This is an interesting turn of events,” the bard said.

Bonanus burst out laughing. “It’s actually really funny if you think about it.”

“They’re probably not even going to remember anything from tonight,” Indarias shook her head.

“Too bad,” Menogias said. “At least Xiao's finally getting some sleep."

---

The next morning, Xiao slowly gained consciousness. The first thing he noticed was the sunlight and the smell of floral tea. The next thing he felt was an annoying pounding in his head. Too tired to open his eyes, he tried to move but something was holding him down.

Suddenly alert, he snapped his eyes open. Instead of a threat, what he saw was Venti's sleeping face, dangerously close to his own. His breath ruffled the stray strand of hair that fell on Xiao's forehead. His arms were wrapped tightly around his waist and their legs were entangled, too.

Xiao's breath caught in his throat. He has never been this close to anyone, only in the throes of battle and bloodbath when he wrestles with demons and monsters. This closeness was new to him, and he never imagined that Venti-

Venti exhaled through his mouth. Xiao's face crinkled in displeasure when he smelled the sour odor of alcohol.

"Venti," Xiao poked Venti with his free hand. "Wake up."

"Grngng," the sleeping archon mumbled, pushing his forehead against Xiao’s. "Don't wanna."

"Venti, I don't know where we are."

"Ugh," Venti’s eyes fluttered open and Xiao thought that he was beautiful. He cringed. "I feel like shit."

"You smell like shit," Xiao said, absentmindedly stroking Venti's hair.

They both suddenly stilled, becoming fully aware of their current position. With a loud yelp, Venti jerked backward, untangling their legs and falling off the couch.

"Ouch," Venti groaned.

"The hell did you do that for?" Xiao said from the couch.

"That made my headache even worse,"

"Oh, you're awake," Xiao looked up to see Ganyu from the doorway, holding a tray with biscuits and a tea set.

"Ganyu?" Xiao sat up. "Where are we?"

"You're in my apartment," she said, placing the tray on the coffee table beside the couch. Venti stood from the ground and sat on the couch. "Hello," she smiled at Venti. "I'm Ganyu. One of Liyue's adepti. You both can help yourselves on some tea and biscuits."

"Thanks!" Venti took a biscuit and Xiao cautiously took a cup of tea. "Nice to meet you, Ganyu!"

"Now, do you guys remember anything from last night?"

Xiao squinted, trying to remember. He was surprised to realize that his memory was very hazy.

"I just remember going to a restaurant," Xiao said. "And we had dinner. And then we went to a tavern."

"And another tavern," Venti said. "I think we went to more than one tavern?"

"How many drinks did you guys have in total?"

Venti laughed nervously. "I'm not sure, hehe."

"Because the millelith found you both passed out in the wharf," Ganyu said.

Xiao stared at her in shock. "Holy shit."

"Hm, a normal night out for me," Venti shrugged.

"Venti," Xiao warned.

"What?” Venti laughed. “Don’t tell me you didn’t have fun?”

Xiao tried to glower at him but he thinks that he failed miserably. Ganyu let out a small laugh that she immediately suppressed by pressing a hand on her lips.

“Anyways,” Xiao stood up, pulling Venti with him. “We’ll be out of your hair, then, Ganyu. Thanks for letting us stay.”

“No problem!” Ganyu smiled. “By the way, Venti, Zhongli said he’s gonna let this one slide. But the next time you make Xiao blackout drunk-”

“Oh, shit, he knows?” Venti said, panic in his voice. He grabbed Xiao’s hand. “We gotta go now before he finds us.” he waved. “Thanks, Ganyu!”

Ganyu laughed as she waved back at the pair retreating from her apartment. She smiled to herself. It’s nice to see Xiao getting along with someone. She’s known him for centuries and she felt that he was lonely, just like her. As she was slowly getting more comfortable in the human world as secretary of the Liyue Qixing, she was worried that Xiao might spend the rest of his eternity on his own. Although she wasn’t expecting Xiao to be with the archon that gave him his vision, she’s still grateful and happy for him all the same.

---

A few days later, the ghosts found themselves sitting by the waters of Dihua Marsh as Xiao polished his spear while Venti leisurely played the lyre.

“We might be away for a few days,” the bard said to the other ghosts. “There’s a festival in Mondstadt coming up soon and Venti’s staying there to help in the preparations and also during the festival itself.”

“Ooh, that’s interesting,” Menogias said. “What festival is it? Is it the Ludi Harpastum?”

The bard shook his head. “It’s the Windblume Festival. It’s like a flower festival for the anemo archon.”

“That sounds exciting,” Bonanus said. “Do you think we could convince Hu Tao to tell him to go?”

“Venti’s probably going to invite him,” Indarias said.

“Or Xiao’s going to be his usual stubborn self and not go,” Bosacius shook his head. “And after the fiasco of our last attempt, maybe we should let them decide what they’re going to do themselves.”

By the water, Venti finished playing the lyre. “So,” he started. “The Windblume festival is in a few days. I promised the knights that I’ll help with the preparations.”

Xiao stared at him with an unreadable expression.

“I know you’re busy, so I won’t force you to go,” Venti said. “I’m just informing you that I won’t be able to visit you that much while the festival is going on.”

“It’s alright,” Xiao smiled. “I understand. It’s refreshing to see you actually do your responsibilities.”

“Watch your mouth, Adeptus Xiao,” Venti crossed his arms and huffed. “I’ll have you know that I’ve helped save Mondstadt. More than once.”

“Sure thing,” Xiao laughed and fondly ruffled Venti’s hair. Venti stared at him, surprised. He retracted his hand quickly and coughed. “Anyways, I gotta go too. Got some demons to, uh, kill.”

“Sure,” Venti said, still dazed. “I’ll be heading back to Mondstadt, too.”

“Uhm, take care, then,” Xiao refused to look at Venti and he teleported away.

Venti sat in stunned silence, running his own hand across his hair. Slowly, a smile placed itself on his face.

“If they don’t get together by the end of this month I am walking straight into the underworld,” Bonanus said.

And if Venti directed his small smile and soft gaze towards Wangshu Inn, well, no one but himself and five ghosts would know.

---

It was a slow day at the funeral parlor. There weren’t any urgent tasks to be done, only a few paperwork and reports to be filled up but weren’t due any time soon. Zhongli took advantage of the lull in customers by enjoying a cup of tea in the staff’s kitchen. He was contemplating which opera he should watch this weekend; when he felt a sudden burst of anemo power in the room.

“Zhongli,” Xiao said, eyes wild. “I need your help, please.”

Zhongli stood immediately. “What’s wrong, Xiao?”

“Uhm,” Xiao’s urgent expression softened to something that looked shy. “I was wondering if you could come with me to the Windblume Festival.”

“Winblume? In Mondstadt?”

“Actually, you know what? Don’t mind me. I’ll just go back to demon-slaying,” Xiao was about to walk out when Zhongli stopped him.

“No, it’s okay. I actually want to go, too,” Zhongli said. “But, why did you ask me to come with you? If I may ask.”

“I’ve never been to Mondstadt,” Xiao said, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand. “You’ve been there already, right?”

“Yes, a few times for diplomatic reasons,” Zhongli smiled. “You want to see Venti, am I right?”

“No!” Xiao denied. “It’s just that I suddenly have some free time and Venti mentioned that there was a festival and maybe I should go to Mondstadt at least once since it’s the land of anemo and-”

“It’s alright,” Zhongli placed a hand on Xiao’s shoulder. “I understand.”

Xiao looked at him, grateful that he didn’t need to explain himself further.

“Oh?” a voice said from the doorway. Hu Tao walked in and waved at Xiao. “Hello. What’s going on here?”

“Director,” Zhongli said. “May I ask for a few days of leave? I have to accompany Xiao to Mondstadt?”

“Hm? Xiao’s going to Mondstadt?” Hu Tao said, mischief evident in her voice. “Isn’t it the Windblume festival right now? You know, the festival of romance and the anemo archon?”

Xiao glared at her. “Yes. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong!” Hu Tao said. “Sure, you could go, Zhongli.” she looked behind Xiao’s shoulder, the same way she did the day they met a few weeks ago. “But don’t leave right away. I need to tell you something before you go. Wait for me in my office.”

“Of course, director. Thank you,” Zhongli said.

When Xiao and Zhongli were gone from the kitchen, Hu Tao crossed her arms, facing the ghosts who stayed behind. “Did anyone try to communicate with him to go to the festival?” she asked, sternly.

“We didn’t do anything as such, Ms. Director,” Bonanus said.

“Surprisingly, it was all Xiao’s idea,” Indarias said. “We take no credit, whatsoever.”

“Interesting,” Hu Tao said. “Anyways, you got any plans to tell me so I can tell Zhongli before he leaves?”

“Yes,” Bosacius stepped forward. “Before he left, the bard told us that Venti’s hosting a poetry writing class during the festival. He said maybe Xiao could be convinced to do that.”

“Good idea,” Hu Tao said. “I’ll inform Zhongli about it. Will you guys be coming with them?"

"Should we not? " Menogias asked.

"As long as you don't talk to them directly then I don't see the problem," Hu Tao shrugged. "Just don't do anything rash. "

After talking to the ghosts, Hu Tao made her way to her office where Zhongli was waiting.

"Xiao left already?"

"He said I can meet him in Wangshu Inn on the way to Mondstadt," he said. "What is it that you need to discuss?"

"The same ghost has another request," she said. "He said to give Xiao the idea to join this poetry writing class Venti's teaching in the festival."

"Hm, I think he could be persuaded," he said. "I will inform you of the progress once I return to Liyue."

"Great!" Hu Tao grinned.

---

Zhongli and Xiao managed to arrive in Mondstadt a few days before the end of the festival. Despite this, the festive spirit was still in full swing among the citizens. Around them were numerous stalls that sold special festival merchandise and food, mini-games that were open for everyone, and the usual drunkard stumbling around the streets after a drinking competition.

"This certainly is a sight," Zhongli said. "And quite a contrast to our own Lantern Rite, too."

"It is different," Xiao said, looking at the blue and flowery decorations around the marketplace.

"Should we pay our respects to Lord Barbatos, then?" Zhongli said with a knowing look. "Before we partake in the festivities."

Xiao felt his face heat up. "Do whatever you want," he said, turning away from Zhongli.

As they made their way to the cathedral, the other yakshas marveled at the sight of a new city.

"It looks so pretty here!" Menogias exclaimed. "They even have pretty dandelions floating around."

Bosacius sighed. "Makes me wish I went here back when I was alive."

"Oh, don't get sappy now, Bosacius," Indarias said.

Zhongli and Xiao reached the final steps to the plaza where the statue of Barbatos stood. Xiao's eyes widened as he took sight of the place; more floral decorations, children running around, people laughing and talking to one another.

"You can feel it, right?" Zhongli said. "That unmistakable feeling of the wind and freedom," a smile graced his face.

Xiao nodded, not quite trusting his voice. It seems that the people of Mondstadt truly embody the values of their archon.

Across the plaza, they spotted a group of people crowded together. Curious, Xiao followed Zhongli as he made his way towards the crowd.

"Okay, recap," a voice from the center of the crowd said. "What do we do when we get stuck on a line?"

A boy shot his hand up. "Look for more inspiration around us to help us get our writing rhythm back?"

"Correct," they got closer to the crowd and Xiao saw Venti, standing in the midst of all these people dedicatedly writing notes on their papers.

"Alright, so homework is to finish the last stanza of your poems," he said, as firm as any teacher. "There's no strict rule. Just follow what your heart and inspiration say."

The crowd started to disperse, although some people stayed behind to ask Venti some more questions.

Zhongli placed a hand on Xiao's shoulder to catch his attention. "Seems like Venti's been teaching poetry to the people. Quite fitting since everyone's focused on creating gifts for their loved ones during Windblume."

"He's really busy then," Xiao said, feeling despondent. He tried his best not to let it show.

"Why won't you join the class?" Zhongli said. "Put your poetry skills to the test. And maybe, you could give your poem to someone afterward."

"Oh, I don't think I should-"

"Hey! Xiao! Zhongli! You're here!" Venti jogged towards them. "I didn't know you guys were going!"

"I see that you've been busy," Zhongli said. "Poetry lessons?"

"Of course," Venti said, proudly. "Only the best teacher for the citizens of Mondstadt. You guys wanna join? I could consider a bit of a tuition fee discount for you."

"Tuition fee?"

"Festivals are also a business opportunity," Venti said. "So, what do you say?"

"Xiao will join," Zhongli said, his tone indicating that no opposition is welcome.

"Really?" Venti said, looking at Xiao. Xiao sighed. It's not like he can deny those sparkling eyes of his.

"Yeah, sure," Xiao shrugged, noncommittally. "Worth a shot, I guess."

"Yay!" Venti cheered. "How about you, Zhongli?"

"I want to go shopping."

"Straightforward as always," Venti laughed. "There's a lot of local specialties for sale in the marketplace." he then grabbed Xiao's hand. "I'll take care of your son, in the meantime."

Zhongli laughed as Xiao spluttered. "I'm not his son!"

"Don't bore him too much," Zhongli said before making his way to the marketplace.

"Alright!" Venti said, leading Xiao towards a bench in the plaza.

Meanwhile, the other yakshas continued to enjoy their sightseeing of Mondstadt.

"Hey!" they turned to see the bard approach them. "You guys made it!"

"Mondstadt is beautiful," Bonanus said. "You must be proud."

The bard beamed. "Thank you. Seeing the people of Mondstadt so carefree and happy really makes our sacrifices feel like they're worth it. And it's also thanks to Barbatos that the city is what it is now."

"And I presume that they're already discussing love poetry?" Bosacius asked.

"They just started. Hopefully, everything will go according to plan." the bard lightened up. “While waiting for them, do you guys want a tour of Mondstadt?”

The others were more than happy to accept the bard’s invitation.

---

“So, who are you writing the poem for?” Venti asked, leaning on the bench.

“I won’t tell you,” Xiao said, looking away.

“Pft, where’s the fun in that?” Venti said. “Can’t I at least guess?”

“No.”

“Alright, then,” Venti huffed. He gave Xiao a piece of paper. “Those are the three basic things to remember when writing a love poem.”

Xiao squinted at it. “It doesn’t make sense.”

“Excuse me. Read it properly.”

“What the hell is ‘Take a deep breath, think about all the lovely moments, and savor the feelings you had during those times’ ?”

“This is gonna take longer than I expected,” Venti sighed. But deep inside, he’s not actually serious about his complaint. “Okay, I’ll do a different approach for you. Imagine the person you want to write a poem about.”

“Okay,” Xiao stared at him intently. Venti tried not to read too much into it.

“Then, think of everything you like about that person. It could be their physical appearance or their personality, but I recommend thinking of a bit of both.”

"Okay, "

"Then use some poetry tricks like using metaphors! You can't go wrong when using metaphors."

Xiao tilted his head. "What are metaphors?"

"It's like when you compare something with another thing. It's better if I gave you an example. Hm," Venti hummed, thinking. He looked around for inspiration: the flowers, the sky, the people gathered in prayer in front of the statue. He looked back at Xiao and an idea popped into his head. "Okay, so like this. Your face is as radiant as snow touched by the sun and your eyes shine as bright as shimmering cor lapis."

"Oh," Xiao said with an unreadable expression. "So, compliments."

"Of course, they have to be compliments!" Venti said. "Now, other than metaphors, you can use rhymes but they're not really required if you don't want to. And most importantly, just write whatever your heart wants you to say. That's the most efficient way to write poetry. No teacher can teach you that, not even me. So, you really have to learn to rely on your heart. "

"Rely on my heart," Xiao muttered. “I think I know what to write."

"Really?" Venti said, surprised. "That's great!"

"I think-"

"Venti! " Xiao was interrupted by a girl in red running up to them.

"Amber! What is it?" Venti said, facing the girl.

"Jean told me to call you to help with the gliding games," Amber said.

"Okay, sure, I'll follow you," he turned back to Xiao. "Sorry, I have to go."

"It's alright," Xiao said. "I can write the poem while you're busy."

"That's great!" Venti grinned. "Meet you here tonight? After the games are over?"

Xiao nodded. Venti gave him one last smile before following Amber to where the gliding games were being held.

Xiao picked up the paper and the quill that Venti left on the bench. He took a deep breath and started writing.

---

The sun was starting to set on the horizon but the festivities still kept going on. There were bands and bards performing on every tavern and street corner with people dancing to the beat of their lyres and drums. Children ran around with flower crowns on their heads and their parents strolled along the streets holding hands.

The market was filled with even more people, everyone sampling various Mondstadt specialties and buying festival goods.

"Look at that!" Menogias exclaimed. "They look like Grilled Tiger Fish from back home!"

"That's Mondstadt Grilled Fish," the bard said. "That has been around since my time. It's a classic."

"Hey," Bonanus said. "Isn't that Zhongli?"

They saw Zhongli standing in front of a flower shop, holding a stick of candied apple in one hand and a shopping bag in the other.

"Rex Lapis has always been quite a shopaholic," Indarias shook her head fondly.

They spotted Xiao approach Zhongli.

"Seems like he's done with the poem?" Bosacius asked.

"-need, Xiao?" They heard Zhongli say as they approached them.

"I was about to buy flowers," Xiao said. "I didn't know you'd be here, too."

"Oh? Zhongli said, curious. "What for?"

"That's a secret," Xiao smiled.

"Wait a minute," Bonanus said. The other yakshas were stunned at how different Xiao was acting.

Zhongli laughed. "Alright, I won't push." he faced the girl who was manning the flower shop. "Hello, young lady. I'm from Liyue so I'm a bit lost. May I ask what sort of flowers is best to offer to the anemo archon?"

"Anything goes here in Mondstadt!" the girl said proudly. "People here offer all sorts of flowers. I've seen people offer windwheel asters and dandelions, which are the most common ones. However, there are also some who offer flowers like sweet flowers and even mint."

Xiao gingerly touched a display of white flowers. "How about these?"

"Those are cecilias, sir," the girl said. "People also offer them but they're not as common since they only grow in Starsnatch Cliff."

"I'll get a bouquet of these, "Xiao said, handing her some mora. The girl beamed as she nodded, immediately preparing his order.

"Smart choice, "Zhongli said and Xiao turned away to hide his smile.

The girl gave Xiao the finished bouquet. The white cecilias were wrapped in powder blue paper tied together with a white bow.

"Good luck," Zhongli smiled. Xiao gave him a grateful smile back. Determination written all over his face, Xiao made his way back to the cathedral plaza.

---

Venti huffed as he ruffled his hair, causing stray leaves to fall out. He decided to join the gliding games last minute. It was fun, except for the part where he accidentally fell on the tree in Windrise.

He did one final check on his hair to make sure that not a single strand was out of place before putting his hat back on. The sun has already set, twinkling stars replacing the brightness of the sun.

He closed his eyes, relishing the feeling of the night breeze on his face and listening to the sounds of cheers and laughter of his people. His heart warms up at the sound of Mondstadt. So much has changed since the very first rebellion. He opens his eyes and gazes at the statue in the center of the plaza.

"You would've loved it here," he whispered. "They're all so happy, thanks to you."

He suddenly spotted a figure making its way towards him.

"Xiao!" Venti waved. "Over here!"

As Xiao approached him, he noticed that one of his hands was behind him.

"What's that?" he asked, moving to look behind him but Xiao swiftly turned, not allowing him a clearer view.

"Wait," Xiao said, giving him a folded piece of paper. "Read my poem first."

"Okay…" Venti opened the paper but Xiao started talking.

"You told me to just follow my heart, right?" Venti gasped as he read what Xiao wrote. "I'm not really good with words, especially poetry. But I wanted to try. For you."

"I-" Venti could hardly speak.

"You don't have to say anything," Xiao said.

Venti reread the poem and let out a small laugh.

"Also," his eyes widened when Xiao pushed the bouquet towards him. "Take this too."

"Thank you," Venti said, still in disbelief. He read the poem one more time.

"How long are you gonna read that?" Xiao grumbled but he was blushing furiously.

"Can I read it out loud?"

"Huh? Do you have to?"

"Why?" Venti smirked. "You're embarrassed?"

"No," Xiao denied. "Adepti don't get embarrassed."

"So, I can read this out loud, then?"

"Ugh, do whatever you want," Xiao said looking away.

Venti's smirk softened to a smile. "Your eyes are like a summer sky. Your laugh sounds like a thousand bells. You made me realize that life is worth living. Every moment is treasured when I'm with you. I like you."

Xiao coughed. "So, what's your feedback, teacher?"

Venti couldn't wipe the smile off his face. "You rhymed the word 'you' with 'you’. A beginner's mistake so I can let that slide. The imagery is good but I guess it could be a bit stronger."

"Alright," Xiao said.

Venti folded the poem and crossed his arms, careful not to crush the bouquet he was holding. "Now, time to discuss your payment."

"How much are you charging?"

"I usually accept mora or a bottle of wine," Venti risked a small step towards Xiao. He quietly let out a breath of relief when Xiao didn't move away. "However, since you're not from around here, I could charge you something else."

"What would it be?" to his surprise, Xiao also took a step towards him.

"Hmm, let me think," another step closer. "Maybe a discount? Or some fine Liyue liquor?"

"Oh?" Xiao stepped forward. "Is that what you really want?"

"No," Venti whispered. They were now standing even closer to one another, almost toe to toe. He smiled, hoping Xiao would get what he is implying. "What do you think? How should you pay me?"

"I don't know," Xiao whispered back. "You tell me."

Venti rolled his eyes at the push-and-pull game they're playing. "This is what I want," Venti leaned closer to Xiao, closing the distance between them, and pressed their lips together in a soft kiss.

He pulled back quickly, suddenly embarrassed at his actions. Before he could apologize, Xiao wrapped an arm around his waist and pulled him closer again for another, longer kiss.

"So," Xiao said, a bit breathless after they pulled apart. "Did I pass?"

"Definitely," Venti grinned. "Ten out of ten." he rested his forehead against Xiao's. "And I like you, too."

Across the plaza, the ghosts gaped at them, absolutely speechless.

"It actually worked," the bard said after a long silence.

"We did it!" Menogias squealed, shaking a dumbfounded Bosacius' shoulders.

"They actually got their wits together," Bonanus said.

"Come to think of it," Indarias said. "We gotta give them the credit. And Zhongli. And Hu Tao."

"I can't wait to tell Ms. Hu Tao about this," the bard beamed.

"Our contract with her is fulfilled," Bonanus said, solemnly. "That means we have to keep our end of the contract."

"Oh," Menogias’s face fell. "That means we have to leave Xiao."

The bard looked back at the pair. Venti was talking animatedly, waving the bouquet as he spoke and Xiao was laughing. "You know what," he said. "I think they'll be alright."

The other yakshas were silent for a while.

"You're right," Bosacius said.

"But what do we do now?" Menogias asked.

"Mondstadt is nice," Bonanus said. "It made me realize that I haven't traveled around Teyvat at all back when I was alive. I think I'd like to do that now."

"I think I want to do that, too," the bard said. "I want to see the world and write ballads of every place I'll wander into."

"Can we come?" Menogias asked.

"Yeah, I think you guys have a point," said Indarias.

"It's decided then!" Bosacius said. "We'll travel through Teyvat. Personally, I'd like to see the hot springs in Inazuma."

"How will you even enjoy the hot springs when you can't feel anything-" the ghosts made their way down the stairs, already planning the rest of their new adventure.

The bard looked back to his friend, smiling and so in love. "You saved so many people," he said. "Now, it's your turn to be happy."
