Work Text:
Julie had lived in her house her entire life.
Next door had mostly always been empty.
People came and went.
Julie had heard rumours that it was haunted.
Apparently the son of a family who had been living in the house in 1995 died and the rumours were that his ghost haunted the house.
Julie was walking home from work when she saw that there were movers outside of the house.
A boy with brunette hair was helping take boxes in while also was directing the movers where to put the boxes and furniture in the house. A boy with black hair was taking boxes into the house too.
Wonder how long they'll stay for.
-
"This is either gonna be awesome or terrible!" Reggie exclaimed. "Cause we might get killed -" Luke gave him a look. "Er yeah - By a ghost because you bought a haunted house!"
"I got a good deal!" Luke exclaimed, putting his hands out.
"It's a freaking haunted house!" Reggie said.
"We don't know that!" Luke said.
"Tell that to everyone that used to live here! We're moving into the freaking Amityville Horror House!" Reggie exclaimed, hands going in every direction.
"I think it's just called the Amityville House." Luke muttered. "And you said you were cool with it!"
"I was. I am. It's just, now I've had time to think. And I'm kind of freaking out about living with a ghost. Or ghosts. Or demons. Are demons real?"
"Not sure. Haven't met any yet. And I think Amityville was worse than just a good old fashioned haunting. That was like, poltergeist type level stuff." Luke said.
"Comforting. It's just, this better not be that. Or a Thirteen Ghosts situation." Reggie said.
"It's not. From what the newspapers and internet have said, it sounds like it's just one ghost. Probably freaking people out to get them to leave because -" Luke thought about it. "Of some reason."
"Do you really think it's that guy who died in 1995?" Reggie asked.
"Maybe." Luke said.
"What if he died because something else is in the house?" Reggie exclaimed.
"It said he died because of an accident -" Luke started. Reggie opened his mouth to protested but Luke held a hand up. "Which I know is generally what they say. But maybe it was just an accident."
"Or we're gonna find a red door in the basement." Reggie muttered.
It was then that both of them noticed a girl had stopped on the side of the road and was looking at them.
"Hi!" Reggie said, smiling and waving.
"Hi." Said the girl.
"I'm Luke, this is Reggie. We're moving in." Luke said.
"Nice to meet you." The girl said and continued walking.
Luke and Reggie saw that she had gone to the house next door to them.
"Guess she's our neighbour." Reggie stated, looking at Luke.
-
The first night in their new house was uneventful.
"Well that was an uneventful non-ghost filled night." Luke stated, walking down the stairs into the kitchen.
Reggie was getting steel cut oatmeal for breakfast and had already put a cup out for Luke with his blood bag (which Luke gets from the hospital, he's a reformed vampire) next to it.
He abruptly turned around from the kettle that had started to boil and glared at Luke. "Why would you say that?" Reggie exclaimed. "Now there's definitely going to be a ghost or a demon or who knows - Unless you know?" Reggie asked.
Luke sat down at the table pouring the blood into the cup and said "I do not."
" - What else in this house!" Reggie continued.
They had just finished breakfast and headed into the living room when they saw a boy with blond hair in a pink hoodie standing off to the side of the living room.
"Ahh!" Reggie exclaimed, flailing.
Luke laughed.
"Are you the ghost? Are you an evil ghost?" Reggie asked.
"So you're a vampire and you're a werewolf?" Pink hoodie boy asked pointing to Luke and Reggie.
"We are. How do you know that?" Luke asked, calmly.
"Sound travels." Pink hoodie boy responded.
Luke and Reggie looked at each other like the ghost's response was the most obvious thing in the world and why hadn't they thought of that.
"You both mentioned what you are last night, and that this might be the first time in history that a werewolf and a vampire are living together." Pink hoodie boy said.
"It probably is." Luke said.
"Haven't had any vampires or werewolves move in here before." Pink hoodie boy said. "Do you drink people?" He asked, looking at Luke.
"What?" Luke asked taken aback.
"Sorry - I was just wondering." Pink hoodie boy asked, slightly ashamed of the fact that he had asked in the first place.
Reggie looked at Luke. "No. He's a reformed vampire. He gets his blood from the hospital."
"Aren't you guys supposed to be like, mortal enemies?" Pink hoodie boy asked.
"I mean, yeah. Species-y speaking. But we're like, best friends." Reggie said.
Luke gave him a look. "We are?" He asked, hopeful.
Reggie clapped him on the back. "Of course we are. This isn't just a convenient living situation we got going on here."
Luke smiled.
"Did you not think we were friends?" Reggie asked.
"I mean... I did, but best friends?" Luke asked.
"Of course we're best friends!" Reggie exclaimed.
Luke smiled.
"And we could be friends, too." Reggie said, looking at pink hoodie boy.
"Really?" Pink hoodie boy asked. "Yeah. Sure. Sorry - it's just, it's been so long since -" Tears formed in his eyes. "Since anyone could see me."
Luke and Reggie looked at each other.
"Can we touch him?" Reggie asked. Luke nodded. They walked over to the ghost. "Do you want a hug?" Reggie asked. Pink hoodie boy nodded. Luke and Reggie hugged him.
"I'm Alex." He sniffled.
"Oh, you are the guy who died in 1995?" Reggie asked, remembering the name Luke had told him when he asked if Reggie was cool with moving into a haunted house.
"Yeah." Alex said, smiling.
They all pulled away.
Luke and Reggie smiled.
"I have to ask, why did you scare people away?" Reggie asked.
Alex shrugged. "I didn't at first. But after a while of people not being able to see me, that was lonelier than actually being alone. So."
Luke and Reggie nodded, solemnly.
-
Julie heard a knock at the door and went to answer it. It had been two days since the two boys had moved in next door.
The two boys from next door were grinning when Julie opened the door.
Luke and Reggie.
"Hi" Luke exclaimed, putting a hand up to wave, holding a fruit basket in the other hand like it weighed nothing.
"I thought we should introduce ourselves. Since we're going to be - since we are - neighbours." Reggie said.
Julie looked at both of them and took the fruit basket as Luke handed it to her.
"Thank you." Julie said. "I'm Julie."
"Hi Julie, I'm -" Luke started to say, smiling.
"I remember your name, Luke." Julie said, slightly rolling her eyes.
"Right." Luke said, sheepishly.
"So, how long do you think you'll be staying?" Julie asked.
Luke and Reggie looked at each other. "Staying?" Reggie asked.
Julie looked to her left. "In your house. Haven't weird things been happening?" She asked.
"Oh." Luke laughed. "Yeah, we're good. We've got the weird things happening sorted out."
"You do?" Julie asked, skeptically.
"Yeah, we met the gh -" Reggie started before Luke elbowed him.
"It's been handled." Luke said, confidently.
"Okay." Julie said slowly.
"Anyways, we just wanted to come say hi and to introduce ourselves - again. Later!" Luke said, rushing him and Reggie out of the doorway and down the walkway.
Julie smiled to herself and closed the door.
-
As Luke and Reggie were walking back to their house they noticed Alex was outside at the end of the walkway.
"I thought you couldn’t leave the house." Luke said.
"I couldn't. I mean I tried, I got to the bottom of the stairs and I ended up back inside the front door. This is the farthest I've ever gotten." Alex said.
"Maybe your grief at dying was keeping you from leaving?" Luke suggested.
"Maybe. Or maybe you guys living with me is somehow making our supernaturalyness stronger?" Alex said.
“Maybe.” Luke said.
"That's awesome!" Reggie exclaimed. "Getting this far - Not the not being able to leave the house."
Alex smiled.
"Try walking on the sidewalk." Luke said.
Alex looked at Luke and then stepped onto the sidewalk. Alex's eyes went wide. "Whoa. I can leave the house!" Alex exclaimed.
"That's awesome!" Reggie exclaimed.
"Right on!" Luke exclaimed.
Julie closed the curtain window, having seen their exchange.
-
Julie was walking home. She had slightly cut her hand at work. It had been bandaged up but was still slightly bleeding. But nothing serious.
She figured she should ask the question she's been wanting to know forever. She knocked on her neighbours front door.
Reggie answered with Luke behind him.
"Hi." Julie said. "I just wanted to say, my dad, brother, and I wanted to say thank you for the fruit basket and welcome to the neighbourhood. I hope you guys enjoy living in your house. Is it actually haunted?"
"Ye -" Reggie started to say before looking behind him at Luke who was starting at Julie, mouth slightly open.
Julie looked slightly concerned. "Is he ok?" She asked Reggie. Reggie turned around to look at Julie then back around to Luke.
"Luke - Buddy. You ok?" Reggie asked, cautiously.
Luke was still staring at Julie, eyes wide, like he wasn't really seeing Julie or Reggie.
He took a step forward. As he did so his eyes started to turn black.
Julie could swear she saw the barest of fangs sticking out.
"What -" Julie started to ask.
"Oh no." Julie heard Reggie say before abruptly pushing her out the door and telling her to leave. "Sorry, please leave, we'll talk later!" He said before shutting the door.
"Okay." Julie said to herself before turning around and walking home.
That was weird. As weird as a haunted house?
-
"Luke!" Reggie exclaimed.
Luke walked forward not really seeing Reggie, eyes still black and fangs bared.
"Luke - Please." Reggie pleaded.
Alex appeared to Reggie's right. "Hey what's going - on?" Alex asked, voice elevated at seeing the situation in front of him.
"Luke started going all vampire when Julie was at the door. She came over to say thanks for the fruit basket and asked if the house was haunted and Luke was just vamping out for some reason." Reggie exclaimed.
Luke suddenly surged forward, trying to get to get past Reggie to the front door. Reggie took a step forward and Luke hissed at him.
"I'll go get some blood!" Alex said, disappearing and appearing by the fridge grabbing a blood bag (Alex has had plenty of time to harness his Patrick Swayze) before reappearing in the living room with a cup full of blood.
Alex put the cup in front of Luke.
Luke grabbed the cup with lightning speed and drank all of it.
His eyes turned back and his fangs subsided.
Luke held the cup down in front of him, his head down, looking ashamed.
"I'm - I'm sorry." Luke said meekly.
"Hey. It's not your fault." Reggie said, gently.
"Yeah." Alex said, solemnly.
"It's just so hard." Luke said, tears in his eyes.
"We know." Alex said, putting a hand on Luke's shoulder.
Reggie nodded.
"But I'm trying - So hard." Luke said, sadly.
"Hey, it's not something you can just get over overnight. You've been at this a while, and it'll obviously be a lifelong thing. But we're here for you. That's why you wanted to move in together. We make each other better. And we're stronger together." Reggie said.
Luke sniffed. "Yeah. Thanks guys." He said looking grateful at Reggie and Alex.
Reggie and Alex smiled.
“Why’d you vamp out?” Reggie asked.
“I smelled blood on her hand. I think she cut it.” Luke said.
"How did you guys meet?" Alex suddenly asked.
"Oh. Luke saved me from the werewolf that bit me. If he hadn't come along when he did, it might've killed me instead of just scratched me. Then Luke helped me adjust to being a werewolf and living in the supernatural world." Reggie said.
"I just happened to be out for a walk when I smelled the werewolf and then heard it attacking someone." Luke said as if he hadn't done much of anything.
"You saved my life." Reggie said, seriously.
Luke smiled.
-
Julie heard a knock at the door and opened it.
Luke, Reggie, and a blond boy were standing there.
"Hi. I wanted to apologize. I'm so sorry that happened. It won't - Probably won't - Definitely won't - Happen again." Luke said, looking guilty.
"It's fine. Weird. But fine." Julie said, warmly. "Sorry, who are you?" She asked the blond boy.
All three of the boys' eyes widened. Luke and Reggie looked at the blond boy.
"I'm sorry - You can see me?" The blond boy sputtered meekly.
"Should I not be able to?" Julie asked. Realization hit her. "Oh!" She exclaimed. "Are you the ghost? That's been haunting next door?" She asked, excited.
The blond boys mouth hung open, while Luke and Reggie looked panicked.
"Yes?" Reggie said, unsure.
"That's so cool!" Julie exclaimed.
"It is?" The blond boy asked.
"Yes! I've never met a ghost before! This is awesome!" Julie exclaimed.
All three boys smiled.
"I'm Alex. So. Cool. But how can she see me?" Alex flatly asked, looking at Luke.
Luke glanced at Alex then at Julie. "I mean, she must be - You must be - Supernatural."
Julie's eyes widened. "Me?" She asked skeptically.
"Notice anything weird going on in your life?" Reggie asked, as slyly as he could.
"Just you guys." She said, flatly.
Luke chuckled.
"How can you guys see him?" Julie asked.
"I'm a werewolf and Luke's a vampire." Reggie said.
"Oh." Julie said, voice elevated. "Cool!" She exclaimed. "How old are you?" She asked Luke.
"Please, he hasn't even told me -" Reggie started.
"Over a hundred." Luke said quickly.
Reggie gawked at him. "What? You're telling her before me?" He mocked being offended.
Julie looked between Luke and Reggie.
"Sorry, Reg." Luke said, shrugging.
"Why are you telling me before him?" Julie asked, smugly.
"Uh - Because -" Luke sputtered. "Just because."
Julie cocked her head, not believing him.
"So, since nothing weird has happened, do you have an idea if I'm actually supernatural or if it's some weird fluke that I can see Alex?" Julie asked.
"You're supernatural." Luke stated.
Julie cocked her head, amused.
"I mean - Probably. You generally don't get flukes like this." Luke sputtered.
"Any idea why?" Julie asked.
"Could be any number of things - Fae, witch, selkie, zombie -" Luke listed off.
"Zombie?" Reggie sputtered.
"I've met a zombie or two." Luke said.
"The zombie apocalypse could happen - Good to know." Alex muttered.
"Maybe it's a family thing?" Reggie suggested.
"What's your last name?" Luke asked.
Jule folded her arms. "What are your last names?" She asked, defiantly.
Luke grinned. "It was Patterson."
"Peters." Reggie said.
"Mercer. But I'm sure everyone here already knows that." Alex muttered.
"Molina." Julie said, unfolding her arms and eyeing the three boys.
As soon as she said her last name it looked as if a lightbulb had turned on inside Luke's mind.
"Witch." He said, simply.
"Witch?" Julie asked, skeptical.
"Yeah." Luke said, his mind going full speed. "Yeah, there was a family of witches, I heard about, from like a few hundred years ago. Last name was Molina."
"So we've got a werwolf, a vampire, a ghost, and a witch." Reggie hummed.
"Presumed witch." Julie stated.
"I'm pretty sure." Luke said, confidently.
"Prove it." Julie said, folding her arms and eyeing him.
"Okay. Challenge accepted." Luke said.
"It's not a challenge - Okay." Alex started to say, then resigned and sighed.
-
They spent the next day, after Julie got home from work, testing if she had any powers.
"I've never been inside." Julie commented as she stepped inside the haunted house. "This is so cool!" She exclaimed.
"It's pretty much like any other house." Alex stated flatly.
"I know, but still." Julie said. Alex smiled.
They gave her a tour before beginning the tests.
So far cross Premonitions, Empath, Pyrokineses, Cyrokinesis, Astral Projection, and Telepathy off the list.
"Try catching this." Alex said, throwing a spoon from the kitchen into the living room where they had been testing Julie.
"Wha -" Julie started before putting her hand out toward the spoon. It stopped in mid air. Julie's eyes went wide.
"Telekinesis!" Luke shouted in victory. "I told you you were a witch!" He exclaimed.
"Oh my God!" Julie exclaimed, putting her hand down and the spoon fell onto the floor.
"So cool." Reggie said.
"Wow." Alex said.
Luke held his hand up to high five Julie who high five'd him back, while still in shock with the realization that she was supernatural.
"I'm a witch!” Julie exclaimed.
“Yeah, you are!" Luke said, grinning.
Reggie and Alex smiled.
Julie smiled back.
-
Julie started coming to visit as often as she could. Doing research on being a witch and asking Luke a million questions about the supernatural.
She had her first experience with werewolves when Reggie started to shift.
It was a full moon and Reggie's usual spot wasn't available. He had tried running into the woods but he apparently had ran into five people.
Who knew that many people hung out in the woods at the same time.
Luke was running around trying to save anything he could carry.
"Get my cup!" Luke exclaimed, holding the tv, laptops, and eight books.
"What?" Alex shouted.
"My cup! It's my favourite!" Luke exclaimed.
"We can - Okay." Alex sighed disappearing from the living room and reappearing a few seconds later with Luke's favourite cup.
"Thanks." Luke said, meaning it, as he continued to run around the house grabbing anything he could carry.
"The phones!" Luke shouted to himself. Grabbing his and Reggie's phone.
Luke couldn't be seen from all the stuff he was carrying.
"I think you have everything." Alex stated flatly.
"You think?" Luke stopped in front of Alex.
Alex grinned and nodded, trying not to laugh.
Julie also tried not to laugh.
They heard a shout and all three heads turned toward the kitchen.
Reggie was lying on the floor in pain.
"It's gonna be okay, Reg!" Luke exclaimed. "I saved everything!" He said, proudly.
Reggie slightly nodded, eyes shut.
Reggie cried out in pain again.
The full moon was high in the sky.
Before Julie's eyes Reggie started to transform.
Standing before them was a wolf.
Who spotted them instantly and started to lunge.
Julie and Luke scrambled for the door, just making it out in time before the werewolf jumped up on the front door.
Alex appeared beside them.
All three looked solemnly.
"It's so terrible he has to go through that. That all of you are going through what you're going though." Julie said, sadly.
"At least we have each other." Luke said, smiling sadly.
Julie and Alex smiled.
"You can stay at my place tonight. My dad's got a shoot and my brother's staying over at a friend's house." Julie said, comforting.
Luke and Alex smiled, sadly but grateful.
-
The next morning Reggie woke up in the living room to a blanket draped over him, clothes in front of him, and a trashed house that was in the process of being restored.
He saw that Luke, Alex, and Julie were sitting at the kitchen table. Luke drinking blood from his cup. Julie drinking tea. And Alex making whole grain pancakes.
Reggie smiled, wrapping the blanket around him and getting out of sight of the kitchen to put the clothes on. Once he was dressed he walked into the kitchen.
"Hey! How're you feeling?" Julie asked warmly.
"I'm okay. Thanks." He said sincerely.
"I'm so sorry you have to go through that." Julie said, sadly.
"It's okay." Reggie said, slightly sad.
Alex was putting pancakes onto plates.
"Thanks for making pancakes, Alex. Sorry you can't eat any." Reggie said solemnly.
"It's okay." Alex said, relatively upbeat.
"Can you eat food?" Julie asked Luke.
Luke looked at Julie. "Yep. I don't need it, but I can eat it." He took another sip from his cup.
"This looks amazing." Reggie stated, starting to pour syrup onto the pancakes.
Julie looked around and smiled at the family they had all found.
