Work Text:

Crawly took no pleasure in seeing the humans kicked out of the garden.

He liked Eve, with her inquisitive brown eyes in an honest face, she was so curious it had barely taken any tempting on his part to get her to eat the apple.

Unfortunately curiosity was rarely rewarded in his experience.

It was then, coiling on a hot stone warmed by the midday sun, that he spotted the angel a few feet away, right above the eastern gate. He recognised that one, he thought. He had encountered him a few times while slithering around the garden, plucking berries from a bush or kindly chatting with Eve. Many centuries later he would reflect upon this moment. He could never quite tell what pushed him to do it. He just remembered an irresistible pull, a sweet call to just ‘come closer’ and ‘take a better look’. Before consciously deciding to do so, he had slithered on top of the wall and shifted back into his human form.

The angel, funny enough, seemed as nervous as him. But he had not smited him yet, that must have counted for something surely. The angel was just as he remembered him. Fair eyelashes encircling kind blue eyes, bouncy blond curls framing a round and expressive face. Soft looking lips shaping words around a sweet voice. They exchanged a few words until the angel suddenly explained how he had gifted his god given sword to the humans. This did things to Crawly he couldn’t explain. But the angel looked so distressed about it. That wouldn’t do.

“Oh, Crawly sighed, You’re an angel, I don’t think you can do the wrong thing.”

The reassurance was out before he realised he was talking. But the look of relief and the blinding smile he was gifted in return was worth everything. He’d do anything to see it again, Crawly knew with terrifying certainty.

Is there something wrong with my corporation ?, he reflected, taking note of his treacherous heart, beating so fast despite his best efforts to tame it, and of the incessant flutter somewhere in his stomach.

Is it reacting to its proximity with an angel ?

Oblivious to his internal crisis the angel blabbed on, gazing nervously at Adam and Eve making their way through the hot sand. He was pulled abruptly from his thoughts by a majestic white wing draping above his head, sheltering him from the first rain. Pearly white feathers whispering against his arm. He gazed at the angel, seemingly unaware of what he had done, and it all clicked into place then. It felt like a shift in time, a realignment of the universe. How could he have let his guard down like this ? Just long enough for an angel to strike so viciously at his fragile demonic heart.

Betrayal. Yes, that’s what it was. Betrayed by his useless corporation and mocked by the universe.

They must have had a laugh up there looking down on a demon, falling for an angel.
